The reason why she has taunt on herself is super easy to explain if you understand the story of Journey to the West. The running gag of sanzang in most if not all iterations of the character in books and animation, is that she (he) has an extreme knack of finding trouble or having demons and monsters attracted to her (him), so sanzang is the damesel in distress 24/7 for wukong and gang essentially. The other thing is that monsters/demons may also be able to smell him/her out due to her/his divinity traits as sanzang is a reincarnation of a major deity and is said to grant immortality to who-shall-ever feast on sanzang's flesh.
In other words, Sanzang by second (nature) and simply by existing, attracts demons/monsters (as well as according to story plot)

Never liked her in the beginning and have been doing extensive research into rolling for her, but after looking at all the reviews and her skill kit, i'm not going to be rolling for her! she'll fit well into my already utility heavy composition so i'm glad (and was really hoping) for an early review from you since G&A Reviews basically decide if I am to roll for a servant or not haha

fun fact: she was available for summoning temporarily during the Journey to The West Event. With the release of Camelot, she was permanently added to the summoning pool.

I was rolling for Raikou Lancer and got Sanzang and CasGil in my second multi and Zerklot in my 15th multi until finally getting 2 copies of Raikou Lancer in my 18th multi. Before I tried to roll for Sanzang using tickets in her event a while ago. Im really happy since these are all servants i really want.
Another year where the Christmas gacha gets me a surprise servant. Been fun to use her here and there as a support servant. So will be nice to have my own to rely on.
That certainly takes care of any single target offensive Caster needs. Didn't think I'd end up pulling her, but proves you never know.
Boi...you will never have to worry about Assassin Bosses ever again, especially those pesky Soul Eaters! They're almost as bad as 'Critmiras'. And the NP Spam, this was my initial reason to roll a little for her. But even more of a bonus she can *remove* the self debuff from Jeanne & Fran's NPs...This lowkey changes things for me. Damn, I'll have to really think about rolling for her and there's those CEs. I usually just used a Zerker (Iba with Caster support) for high hp Assassins. But I still think Onigashima is much more worth. Iba is a great ST 4* Berserker and Raikou even being aoe, can do ST dmg to Beasts/Demonic with that amazing 3rd skill of hers. I'll probably do one 10 for the CEs at least and leave it at that. Nice spotlight G&A.

For a long time We have been severely lacking of a Strong ST Offensive Caster to deal with Assassin and Soul Eaters.
The painful All Assassin Level at the Da Vinci Event made it awfully clear that there is a real strong need of a Offensive Caster.
Now there are people who are going to say that Offensive Casters are just a meaningless niche that can be covered using Berserkers like the upcoming Raikou.
I will tell them that Berserkers drop off heavily latter in the game due to Break Bar Mechanics.
The longer the battle takes the more likely your Berserker is gonna get one-shot critted that we often get already in current NA.
And when you're going against Assassin who are notorious for Criting and having a real short 3 Turn NP Charge along with an evade,
the berserkers are just going to have a harder and harder time, especially when the Break Bar Mechanic comes in.
Sanzou will fill the gap that many players are missing in their team line up.

All I wanted was some CEs when I did my 10-pull. Instead, I got the Mordred CE and a surprise Sanzo! Good to know that she's top class! I guess if I had to put her into a few words based on this, that makes her... 5* Buster Medea with Utility? Thanks again for the tips as always! :D

blasted the saiyuki ost as a catalyst and got zilch. Got at least one of each of the event ces though so I'm pretty cool with it. May roll again towards the end of the event but until then, on to the west!

I rolled her on the 3rd Anniversary Caster banner. I was pretty salty since I was hoping to get either Tamamo or Merlin, and to add insult to injury, I rolled her twice. One sevant spotlight viewing later and I'm very happy that I did roll her. I've been relying on Medea and Scheherazade as my primary offensive casters, so to have one where a mish-mash deck is an advantage and she can easily NP spam a multi-hit buster NP is something I will now appreciate.
I should also mention Sanzo was VERY useful during Nero Fest or during a quest where you face a barrage of Hassans/assassin servants and mobs, all in one battle/wave. However I was actually using DaVinci for that, because she has AOE, and NP str up by NP default and by skill buff, which, if she's the one who killed the assassins mobs, all their post-death debuff will go to DaVinci, but, are nullified by her debuff immunity via skill buff

Just got her so I came see some teams to use. I can't wait to use her on lb 3 assasin bosses.
Was in dire need of any servant in general, especially cavalry classes... Rolled in the class banner a couple of times as I waited for Apocrypha to roll around, hoping to get Waver and got spooked by her. 10/10 would roll again
I was starting to save up my quartz thinking I wouldn't use it for awhile but I think I am going to reconsider.
Earlier I was rolling to get some of the journey to the west craft essence and to my surprise I ended up getting her instead of the event craft essences that I was trying to get with my summon tickets.
Considering the Kintoki event with Ibaraki is coming out after Journey to the West I'll only throw some tickets and a 10 shot or two her way. Considering I got lucky to NP2 Shuten I have a bit of excess.
Plus I really want Ibaraki more than I want Sanzou. Gonna complete the Oni duo first and foremost. Sorry Buddha Palms :(

Looking back at everything, Sanzou Xuanzang is one of the two best offensive ST DPS Casters in the game after Part 1.5 was introduced. The other being Caster Illya though which of the two being overall better to use is up to how you can get them going. Both of them have NP Gain buffs, though Sanzou's skill is party-wide while Illya has two, one on her NP and one on her skill, both being self-target. Both have a Star Gen Buff, though again, Sanzou's is on her skill with a Debuff Immunity and is once more, party-wide while Illya's is on her NP and is self-target. Sanzou has a Taunt + DMG Reduction skill for defense while Illya has a Guts, Debuff Immunity and Heal for one team member out plus an Invincibility for herself. The biggest case though is if you really want to use their NPs...given both are Triple Art Casters with ST Buster NPs.
Yes, Sanzou's has more hits but Illya's has higher damage values. This means that while Illya will generally output more damage. The main edge Sanzou has her is her natural innate NP gain of 0.82% compared to Illya's 0.32% NP gain rate. Sanzou's Art cards his twice while Illya's hits five times total. Let us remember that Caster Gil has the same amount of his on his Art cards and the same NP gain rate as Caster Illya, and that's not that good without Arts chains and/or Arts crits. To compensate for this, Illya has two NP Gain buffs, which when fully maxed, gives her a good +48% NP Generation, +17% more than Sanzou's party-wide +30%. To differentiate, Illya's requires some luck in a party because to get the most of her NP generation buffs, you'd need to get her Quick and Arts cards to get any real mileage out of them. Sanzou however buffs the parties NP generation, meaning that even if you don't get her Arts cards, your allies can still build up their NP gauges faster to make up.
On to why Sanzou is good now that Parts 1.5 and 2 are out. Simply put more Zerkers and Assassins, some bosses that are painfully annoying being weak to Casters. Shimosa and Salem both sport one boss each weak to Casters, where you'll want either a strong ST DPS Caster or a powerful ST Zerker (who you can keep alive) with Break Bars. Part 2 introduces S.I.N....where some particular segments include Assassin-heavy waves or very strong Assassin bosses. Before you could shuttle her out, now she's gotten some room to shine. Also for NA, we might only have Castoria and Merlin to support her, but soon we'll have Oberon and Koyanskaya of Light to further make usage of Sanzou (and Illya). Perpare to face the wrath of 'Buster' Casters, lol.
She's my most anticipated servant in this batch of banners; definitely gonna roll, but since she's not limited, probably not gonna go too too hard.
Sanzang was my very first 5* servant that I rolled. She has since become one of my best servants because of her NP spamming and her high attack; even with normal damage I find she does a decent job at widdling down enemy health. No regrets with getting her.
Those assets on Sanzou.....so tempting but must save for summer banner, Mama and adopting a banana loli.
At least she isn't limited so we can get spooked by her.
Her NP animation looks amazing!
It's one of the funniest ones too, especially if you use it on huge enemies like the demon pillars and Fenrir's that are bigger than the mountain she punches them into lol

I was going for Tamamo and got Sanzang、then in a last ditch effort to get Merlin I got Tamamo anyways. Which is doubly awesome since both synergize very well with some of teams ik building.
I've done research on Xuanzang (Sanzou) and thought she was very good, and I'm glad I was right, lol. I really, really, REALLY wanna roll for her so badly!!! However, there's a chance I might not be able to since I have to deal with paying some Bills pretty much immediately after her Banner comes out, so if I can manage to roll for her, I'll be happy, but if not, I'll just have to wait for her to spook me... T.T (Here's hoping I can roll for her.)

I was never very fond of her design. Then on JP she spooked me. I felt obligated to level her up. After using her for awhile, though, I really came to appreciate her talents! At some point I rolled her again, and even though she wasn't the servant I was rolling for, I was pretty happy getting NP2.
I'm torn, because I do want prime husbando Ozymandias, but I'd be delighted to get her...

even though she will be in the story gotcha (like tamamo for the 4th banner) i still recommend getting sanzang anyway. her deck combined with waver and gil had me consistently spamming np. and she also picks up the slack for waver since she became my backup attacker. I was going to go for li shuwen but when i got sanzang that went out the window XD

Great video, but saying she is the best offensive Caster is quite an overshot.
In my opinion, her and Illya both have stuff they are far better at.
To begin with, Sanzou only has 10%-20% NP damage up on her first skill. It is still a really good skill, even with the cooldown it has, but the damage aspect drops heavily. Her 2nd skill is just kinda weird as you mentioned but I assume it is good against high hitcount enemies like Jack (and assassins tend to have high hit counts) with lower dmg to further supercharge her NP. Her third skill is good and all, but there is some stuff to keep in mind, mostly regarding the debuff immunity. Firstly, you most likely wanna use it right away since the first few rounds are when you usually want to get as much NP as possible. This makes the debuff immunity useless early, but that does not really matter as this ability has an insanely low 5 turn cooldown. Also, the debuff immunity comes in most handy against AoE NPs which apply stuff like def down, however, she usually can't survive AoE NPs in the first place. I assume she is divine against demon pillars tho.
But unlike Sanzou, Illya has an insanely durable kit for someone who is also made to spam her NP. Firstly, her 50% Buster up has 5 turn CD, which is nice. However, having an invincibility spell is extremely handy for when an enemy is about to fire off an NP and great in general. Her third skill is quite weird tho, a heal for anyone with the buffs still bound to her at a high percentage rate. The debuff immunity is really good for her NP drawbacks- 10% down on both attack and def, for some reason some developer wanted to go into the prisma lore and give her a drawback based on that. Since the debuff immunity can rid her of these, she loses one of the few disadvantages her kit has. Altho, still, 70% chance only and the guts seems to be extremely situational at best. However, post NP upgrade, Illya just turns into a cannon who can shoot NPs quite reliably with a little bit of support.
So, after all, I would say Illya is far more durable and therefor actually better for longer fights as opposed to Sanzou who is a glasscannon in this aspect. She can fire off a lot of NPs, but at the same time, rocks a very low HP pool with no heals or invincibility spells. While she can provide more for the team than Illya, she also requires a lot more in return to work.
something something I also might be hoarding quartz for Illya ever since I started playing F/GO on top of already producing over 6 months worth of Illya memes whilst attempting to get over the fact that offensive Casters don't work well in F/GO
While I am definitely rolling for Illya over Sanzou, and I definitely use her way more in JP, I would say she still suffers tremendously from bad NP gain. Even with the NP gain buff her NP gain is terrible, among the worst among all casters. Illya is a lot more tanky, but all her skills are selfish so she fits into less teams, she needs teams that are either self sufficient or built around her whereas Sanzou can compliment a lot of teams pretty well. I would say Illya performs better at peak performance than Sanzou. I tested a team with Illya, Sanzou, and Waver and Illya was able to get her NP off almost at the same rate as Sanzou, like once every 2-3 turns, and it did twice as much damage. So if you can build the right team around Illya I think she works better purely from an offensive standpoint, but ironically such a team would probably require Sanzou because of her huge NP gain buff and nullifying Illya's demerit. They pair too well together
Finally got her on a spook twice, Rolling for Ishtar got one copy on 300 saint quartz. Waiting for Ereshkigal.
I going to depend on her debuff protection, this will give more options besides the Alter Egos I have as an offensive servant.

Got her with the free quarts we received! Gotta say, the happiest I've been to get a servant. She wasn't on my radar by any means it's just i was kinda still bummed out about not getting shuten and my birthday wasn't the best(as usual) swear I'm always in a bad mood on my birthdays. But, out of no where i saw them glorious rainbows and she came! Btw I'll most likely be breaking my f2p streak soon whenever the guaranteed gacha comes around for jp and globle.

I see her working well with Kintoki and Waver, you can charge up Kintoki and Sanzou's NP right away and do a huge amount of damage. Not going to roll for her since she's not a limited servant and I would rather save up for Caster Marie whose one of my personal favorites.
She SPOOKED my 3 St Quartz summon for Brynhild today hahahaha not that disappointed tho but she's now my 4th SSR Caster

I like how people keep repeating that the interlude for her NP only upgrades the damage while it also makes it ignore enemy's defence buffs (from fgo wiki and appmedia).
I know I will try to roll for her once she drops, I could really use another offensive caster since NR seems to die often and feels a bit better for farming anyways.
I was planning to save for future banners but decided to do a 10-roll on a whim. Ended up getting Xuanzang. I guess maining Byakuren in Touhou fighters acted as a catalyst.

I rolled her and Heracles at 4 am as I was trying to obtain Romani's Fire Flower CE (which I got after 10 tickets + 33 quartz) and now I feel sorry for her because I'll be devoting al my Caster Embers towards Medea (after completing Camelot and Grailing her at 92).
At last I should be able to level up a bit Rapid Sutra Chanting, but it will be some time before I start leveling and Ascending her.
Of course i will roll for her, she's got two big and great reasons to use her right in front of you!
Hi, I picked this cute (and sexy) monk with the recently ticket in NA, and I put her 3 command codes so far: davinci chan in her buster, 20% more stars in her quick, and 100% star absorption for an arts, but I'm not sure about the other 2 arts, it would be good to put another 100% star absorption?? Or only the 25% one??

Since I notice a more crit focused build, you might want to apply some command codes that generate (flat) stars, such as the Santa alter one or the lamp one that also applies burn (don't know the names). You might also want to try crit CCs such as the arts crit Hokusai brush CC. In general, the Merlin CC that gives 10% np is always great for any servant that want to spam their np. And you can never go wrong with sustain CCs such as any healing, healing effectiveness, debuff cleanse or stun prevention CCs.

You forgot to mention Nightingale, as of now she has the best buster skill in the game and combined with her deck and healing should help with Sanzou charging her np and keeping her alive due to her low HP.
