this is exactly what i need my bike chain has been of for like 3 months i put it on literally before i watched this and ordered the tool you are using but i didnt know the name of it so thanks man :D
You need to loosen the link if the link you joined is stiff. (and will most likely be) To do so, you put the chain on the first row of prongs. (the prongs you used rests the chain against the anvil to push the pin in and out but the link will be stiff because you push the plates together the outer ones tight against the inner ones and the pin driving them trough friction in the outer plates) The first row of prongs support the chain from the inside and does not rest on the anvil, and in this configuration you can push the pin a tad bit only in one outer plate, that ensures the correct spacing between outer plates and effectively loosens the link if it's stiff (and i bet it is)
Thank you, sir. I pushed a pin all the way out. Tried to get it back in, but I guess you can't with the tool only. My chain is a little shorter than I would like, but that's ok.
You should've specified that if you go this route, then that particular pin will be weakened and will break after a while. Bike chains are, mostly, sold with single use pins so this particular modification/adjustment can wear the pin out.
Great video. Thank you. Where do I get that tool and what is it's name? How many links do you suggest removing? Should I start with 1 and adjust from there? Thanks again.
Bicycle stores, chain breaker Length of chain is custom cut to fit a given bike frame size with a given drive train, no fixed or pre-determined length. Check out a shimano dealers manual on a 105 or higher specs derailleur, pictures show you exactly how.
So did i miss it? What about the purpose made removable link on chain my chain came off and that link that does come apart to a point, had fell apart. Dont i remove a link to shorten chain, but make sure i use the purpose made removable side, and connect it to the new link i prepare.?
Bro help me, i tried to do this in my chain and i fcked up i bent the outside part, the thing that looks like a "8" i bent the other side part of it but the other one still connects but im concerned that it might snap, do you know any solutions???
Thanks man exactly what I was looking for all them other videos pretty much said pull back your back wheel to tighten your chain but those videos were not helpfull
Lube it. Also, the type of chain may be totally different. May need to grind the pin`s head off. Manufacturers recently come up with chains that can not be shortened, only connected. These chains are sold to fit 6-speed bikes, 8-speed bikes, 10, 12, 1 speed no derailleur, etc.
I appreciate the video but I don’t think you should reuse the pin. I saw something in another video called a master link... be careful riding, you and anyone else following this video.
This is what I’ve been looking for thanks man appreciate it no one else is clear like this
Thanks for commenting.
Same here awesome video man

very good tutorial, simple and straightforward. thank you.
You're welcome!
Thanks mate, i had the tool but they don't give instructions with it so you helped me tie up loose ends like putting the pin back in..😊😊😊😊
Couldn't have been more clear, I just finished taking a link off my chain for the first time! Thanks!

Shut up
Two things I've learned in this video: how to use that particular tool and that by bike chain is overgreased.
very helpful, thank you!
Much appreciated, may we be guided to the path to paradise
Thanks, definitely need that
Great video. Exactly what I needed!

Many chains don't have a quick link
@@theoverengineer Thanks for taking the time to reply.

thanks for the tips

Shorten chain by 1 link (remove damaged link)
Also is there any way I can do it without a tool
With a nail and hammer, take your time.
Without tools, such as looking at it, wishing well - a million years +
Is it the same for half link chains?
Any chain with pins, rollers and plates will work like this
Nice never new how to
Thank you
Is this method works for all kind of bike chain? Is there a length limit where you can't cut/shorten the chain anymore?
There are only engineering limits
Thanks man exactly what I was looking for all them other videos pretty much said pull back your back wheel to tighten your chain but those videos were not helpfull
Glad I could help
Hi I just want to ask. What happens if I pushed the pin all the way? Can I still put it in the chain using the tool?
Pin falls out, difficult to line it up properly to snap back into place.
Good job thank you
whats the effect if we use too long chain for daily use?
It will come off the bike.
Good one. Thanks.
Whats that thing called
Which thing
great vidoe!
Oh god where to find this tool
Bicycle store, online, your buddy's toolbox, ... lots of options ;)
From where we will buy that chain cutter
Wherever they sell bicycles or its chain

Where did you get that tool?
Bicycle store, $5-10
...that's usually a misery. Lol
NEVER EVER reuse a chain pin... ever... EVER...I "it's good"??? no it's not good...
I appreciate the video but I don’t think you should reuse the pin. I saw something in another video called a master link... be careful riding, you and anyone else following this video.
Master links are weaker than rivets, exactly as stated by manufacturers. Go advise them.
What part is carbide? “Just the tip. “
Just the black tip
There’s one angry the background
Okay but I don’t have the tool 😅... what do I do now
Hammer it out with a thin nail, but it is a really miserable project ...
Thanks for watching!
👍🏻 helpful thank you so much
Good stuff
Thx you...so useful.
You're welcome!
Only I read "how to steal a chain"?
I read funny too and I have to look again ...
They make a place to put a wrench on them pin extractors for a reason............just saying
