The Ayodhya Ram Mandir construction commenced after the Supreme Court judgement allotted the disputed land at Ayodhya to Ram Lalla. The site where the Ram Mandir was erected belonged to a Muslim mosque known as the Babri masjid built in the 16th century and the same was demolished in 1992. The erection of the Ayodhya Ram Mandir thus has a history of dispute which spans nearly 500 years. This video explains the major events of the 500-year Ayodhya dispute history. With respect to this I have watched K K Muhammad's (archaeologist) multiple interviews and in that he clearly states that this particular temple which was demolished by mughals or maybe be ruined before they came there is of 'lord rama who has killed the ten headed demon' which is the inscription that was written on the pillars founded there.
Edited: I'm not claiming that the temple should be built there, I strongly condemn the fact that the mosque was demolished and a temple was built on top of that in the independent India irrespective of all the historical facts. Here, I'm just pointing out an explanation from the archeologist who was there.
K K Muhammed is a Musanghi person like the present Kerala governor Arif Muhammad Khan. Most of his claims are lies which is refuted by Advocate Binoj Nair in his UA-cam channel. Then Chief Justice of India - who was awarded Member of Parliament post by BJP for Ayodhya verdict would have taken care of such things if any ASI reports amounting to that. Verdict is available in the internet. Moreover, K K Muhammed has demanded to handover Mathura and Kashi Masjids when Archeological surveys has not done yet...

The mosque was a Shia mosque when it was built. It is clear from the architecture. The moguls later patronize Sunni Islam. This mosque was not used very much as
of the Shia population had dwindled by then. The Brahmins of ayodhya had always maintained that this was built over their temple and had made several attempts to regain possession. The structure was not even in use as a place of worship bu 1800s. In 1859 the entered there with the help of Shikh nigang soldiers. This led to riots and the British locked it up and declared it an archeological site.
So this was not a functioning mosque
The fact that it was built over a temple should be beyond double
1949 was not the first time they tried to place the idols there.
The Sunni board had no historical claim to the land. That is one of the main reasons they lost the land dispute as they could not back their claim.
