The model 39 was and still is a very good gun. I bought mine in 1980 and it was my carry gun for 40 years. Mine has had thousands of rounds thru it and it never failed me. Cosmetically, it needs some work but, other than that, it is still accurate and extremely reliable. Would be nice to see S&W produce them again.
My dad handed down his S&W 39-2, which he purchased brand new in 1975, to me. Luckily for me, my dad has always been a "plan for everything and have a plan for anything", "one day that will be worth a lot of money", " I bought 10 because I needed 5", type of guy😆. When he originally bought the 39-2, it came with one mag, so he asked if they had any individual mags for sale. The gunsmith asked how many, to which my dad answered, how many you got? The gunsmith returned with 7 matching steel mags with steel pushers and the S&W stamped into the bottom of each mag. 100% identical to the one that came included with the purchase of the 39-2. In true epic dad fashion, he was right. They did become worth a lot more money one day, lol. I have heard horror stories from several 39-2 owners who purchased additional mags for their 39-2 such as fitment issues, jamming into the magazine well, loosely fitting and not releasing, 39-2 magazines equipped with plastic pushers failing to feed. I have seen numerous 39-2 magazines falsely claiming to be original S&W equipment available for purchase from popular named sources. I've seen original 39-2 magazines selling between $50-$120 each.
There’s such a charm about these old metal frame wonder-9s, I love a good metal frame handgun. The hi power, Ruger P series, the S&W line of handguns, and not forgetting the CZ handguns either. There quite literally is nothing like them anymore sadly, omitting 1911s and the beretta 92/96
Thanks for the review. To my mind this is one of the best autos ever made. Why? It is a perfect fit to my hand and shoots wherever I point my arm, no aiming. Bought it in 1971 and have fired thousands of rounds through it. After years of developing loads I found the sweet spot, CCI primer, 8.2 gr of Blue Dot and 115gr bullet, any shape. Note this is a compressed load. It is still in the original box, next to my bed. Love my SIG, Colt, Glock and the others, but this is still the favorite and best shooter.
This was the first handgun I ever owned, and I sold it when I got a Beretta 92. Then it was featured in one of my favorite movies (Aliens) and I had to get another one just for that.
I carried one of these as my off duty weapon as a Deputy Sheriff in the late 70's. Carried it in a shoulder holster. The Model 39 would evolve into the Model 59, 459, etc. Great weapon.
The 39 was the first centerfire I shot at around age 14 and it fit the hand sooo nice. It was 35 years later when I thought I should own one and now I own four all in mint condition, with boxes, extra magazines, cleaning rod and, manuals. Average price I'd guess would be ~$800/ea. A beautiful design!
Great gun !! I laid one away today at a pawn shop. Priced at $600 maybe a little high but as clean as yours minus the box, came with an extra mag. Had one years ago back in the 80's and regretted selling it now i have one. Thanks for the great video 👍
I almost bought one exactly like it in the box last year. I have many 3rd Gen Smith’s. I just didn’t want to go down the rabbit hole of the 2nd Gen guns. I should have bought it. I probably would have shot 100 rounds and then put it away. My tastes have changed regarding guns. I like the old classics over the new plastics. But I sure wouldn’t be laying down on a wood table. Mirror blue like that isn’t done anymore.
This was the first pistol I ever bought when I was 18. Mine was Vietnam era. I bought it in the original box with 2 mags and it only had one mag ran through it for $350.
I've owned one since 1979. Beautiful pistol, but two weak points: The extractor and the aluminum frame. The extractor is somewhat delicate and one should not release the slide on an empty magazine. Mine resulted in a small chip in the claw which caused failures to extract. The aluminum frame is subject to stretching if +P ammo is used consistently. The original model 39 came with an all steel frame and slide. At some point the steel frame was replaced by an aluminum one to reduce weight. Careful lubrication is required to prevent excessive wear.
What was “a reasonable price?” … if you don’t mind saying and how long ago did you purchase it? I’m on the fence about buying one myself. ASAP I am currently trying to buy one. Great video. Thanks.

As a collector I’ve had one NIB for years now. You’ve made me want to dig it out and shoot it some.
I am glad I could help lol. A few rounds won't hurt.

I have the 3913, 5906, and 4006. Funny thing is you can get a 3.5 inch DAO with the 3953 but I was really hoping to find a 4 inch DAO lol.
Great Collection. I love old Smiths.
Another great video bro keep em coming! ✌
Great video and firearm
got mine at pawnshop for 500 no box tho , looks alright little beat up , should i get it refurbish or leave it
I would leave it original is always better but up to u
Wow! 99 bones.
My dad has one in his sock drawer
Do a magnet test on ur M39. Is it steel slide but aluminum frame like the M59?
Awesome!
Dr. Loomis in Halloween 4 used this gun. Nichol finished.
He also used a 4 inch Colt Diamond back
Does anyone have a link on a full disassembly, especially that rear dovetail sight. Removal of the rear sight is what i'm interested in!
TIA
Is there a reason your only loading 5 rounds ?
Another safe Queen
SEALS CARIED THEM IN NAM........
