  • This pump drill project is the continuation of my earlier "flint knapping in Denmark" video, in that it uses the flint drill bit that I knapped there. The cord drill itself was supposed to be a vacation project as well, but I didn't have enough time to let the clay flywheel dry properly before the firing on our last evening in Denmark. As a result, it ended up being the only piece that broke in the fire.
This is the flint knapping video:
    - • Stone tools 5: Knappin...
Back home, a new flywheel was made from my locally sourced, reddish clay. So far, I'm using it un-fired, which works just as well as long as you don't let it get too wet.
Both the spindle and the cross arm are made of willow, as is the cordage. The small drill seen at the end is one I made previously, with a flywheel out of limestone and a tip knapped from my local variety of flint.

Just a reminder: As always, this is a silent video with subtitles. Please turn on the video captions for my notes and comments.

cord/pump drills are also very useful for starting fires as well, if you aren't very skilled in the hand rubbing technique

I want to try it to start a fire, but does it not lack of downward pressure?

Truly ingenious, and yet, so simple! The concept of fastening the clay disk evaded me for so long, while and it turns out that all you need is a keyway shim!

Nej, jeg bor i tyskland. :-) But I did live in Denmark for a year when I was very little. Too little to remember anything, but it seems to have left a lasting impression, because I have since returned for many nice vacations!

looks good ! is there any way to make top piece ?
    > *IF* < that would work you could pump with one hand and increase pressure with the other

You mean like a bearing block for a bow drill? That would introduce too much friction at the top of the spindle. Unless you find a way to build a primitive ball bearing. ;-)
