I think the back of the head is only longer cause theres hair that starts 6 inches lower than the other side, as for locking up faster It makes sense, thats where the most friction, and length, will be, and its away from the face where oils from that or your hands will get on it

Just wash your hair and let it grow the more you wash the more progress you’ll see and that’s pretty much it
