Wouldn't exactly call Chris Niosi being recast "stupid" considering the situations surrounding him. Especially considering Niosi straight up confessed to his horrible behavior even besides breaking his NDA.
@@Nostripe361 If that was the reason Niosi's career was ruined that would be true but sadly, it's not, it was the breach of NDA, which is why it is stupid.
I've had an NDA with Nintendo for a voice role (nothing fun, 1-2 Switch) and they are NO JOKE. Though being a shitty person is way worse than violating an NDA.
I'm surprised you didn't mention Hiroki Narimiya in the Judgement segment. He played Tanimura--one of the playable characters in Yakuza 4--and also had his likeness used in the original game. In 2016, he was hit with drug allegations from a Japanese tabloid. He was found innocent, however, the damage was done, and he left the entertainment industry as a result. Tanimura's lines were redone, and a different likeness was also used. I recently heard about Quinten Flynn's allegations. From what I've seen, it's a mess. However, the person who was running the BewareofFlynn Twitter page was found to be harassing him by the court. Does that excuse all of the other stuff he did? No, absolutely not.

What were Disney's actually last words?) But there you go. :/
Wouldn’t it have made more sense if you got mad if he had said Naked Snake instead? Since Sutherland replaced Hayter as Naked Snake and not Solid Snake.
i always thought later on that Snake's VA was replaced because he was in fact NOT Solid/Naked Snake. and that Kojima just took it too far by not telling Hayter that he just went along with the replacement narrative.
Billy Zane still voiced Ansem in Chain of Memories (reused battle lines), it was Kingdom Hearts 2 that replaced him completely. You're thinking of Re:Chain of Memories that came out after KH2
What's bad, I saw Chris Niosi's rise and fall pretty much in real-time. Way back in the day, I was still in high-school in the early 2000s, he was part of a webhub called Fireball20XL, and regularly took part on their podcast, Wha-Chow. And this was real early in that concept, since I think the term "podcast" hadn't even been coined yet when they started that. Even back then he was kind of a jerk. Like the Fireball crew regularly made jokes at each other's expense, and especially at the expense of the actual website's owner, Byron Beaubian (no idea if I spelled that right), or Psyguy as he went by, which I'll use from here on because it's easier. And they all took it in stride. Hell, Psyguy made fun of himself more than the others made fun of him. But Niosi seemed to be one they just didn't do that to, or not nearly as pointedly, and more than once he even dropped out of the podcast while it was live after someone made a comment about him or his series, TOME. Then one day he just stopped showing up for it. Psyguy just explained that he was too busy these days and couldn't make it, and that was that, it seemed. Over two years later, Niosi suddenly reappeared and dropped a massive stream of accusations at Psyguy, calling him all kinds of horrid things (attention whore and emotional abuser being among the nicer ones) and saying he had evidence to prove it. Now, Psyguy's reaction to this accusation was pretty telling. He deleted the website, everything on his UA-cam channel, basically erased as much as he could of his existence on the internet, and as far as I know, has never resurfaced since. As an outsider looking in, I don't pass judgement one way or the other, but at the same time I also think if even half of what Niosi accused Psyguy of was true, he should have gone to the police, because as far as I know, he never did. And it's ironic that all this time later, he loses his career pretty much for the exact same things he accused Psyguy of.
I will say whatever you feel about a person it really doesn't look great when you basically delete all traces of yourself off the internet and disappear. Innocent or guilty that is some hella sus behavior right there. Also the retroactive pot calling the kettle black is pretty remarkable I have to say. It's like chastising somebody about being a responsible driver and then later basically being accused of driving drunkenly through school or something.
What you didn't mention about Flynn's allegations is that they're all false and prooved his innocence on his Twitter account. Niosi on the other hand is still around on UA-cam working on his TOME RPG game.
Niosi also straight up admitted to what he did (though he later deleted his post for some reason, probably because no one wanted to forgive him, it was too little, too late). Not sure if he admitted to knowing about Bryon "SuperPsyguy" Beaubien being a pedophile before he threw him under a bus though. Pretty sure that was among the things he was accused of.
For #1 yeah I remember that controversy. Kojima wanted to ditch him cause kojima is a known star sucker that always wants to use roles in his games to get contact with famous people. But he will ditch you super fast if he can like he did the the quiet actress.
@@braddl9442 I can believe Kojima always wanted Kurt Russell to be Snake (I mean Kojima literally based on the character on one of Kurt's most iconic roles) and then went with Kiefer Sutherland the first chance he could get rid of Hayter, and now Norman Reedus has become Kojima's fave. There's no real reason the main character in Death Stranding had to look exactly like Reedus, other than cos Kojima still has delusions of film making rather than fun game making. I've never been a big fan of any of Kojima's games including the Metal Gear series but Hayter's voice is iconic for Snake.
@@braddl9442 Yeah as much as I hate spreading around accusations I heard he's kinda sleazy and the reason the quiet actress wasn't in death stranding is because she was creeped out by Kojima or she wouldn't "engage" with him I guess is whatthe term would be. I can't remember if there was also issues with the actress from death stranding or if it was just that she was the one that replaced the quiet actress after there were "issues".
Kojima is kind of an overrated hack. He bought into his own propaganda as some genius but truthfully his success was the work of others. He might have some interesting idea but he’s an egotistical jerk.
Kind of ironic for No. 2 since Sora ended up in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate with Haley Joel Osment voicing him in English despite that the actor is a celebrity.
Of course, it would be cool to hear Kurt Russell do the character but Hayter is just so iconic. It is always hilarious to me in a twisted way that Kojima has such an absolute dislike and frankly hatred of Hayter. Then again from stuff I've heard from both MGS5 and death stranding kojima's kind of a dick. He's a genius but that doesn't stop him from being creep too.
@@JohnDoe-wq5eu Kurt would have played big boss in mgs3. I do want to mention that Chris Niosi has gone through therapy to make himself better and has recently done new voiceover gigs and even script adaptation work for some anime. Not to mention he’s released a video game reboot of TOME.
Several of the people he's hurt have said he's done nothing to make amends to them. Niosi may be trying to be a better person, but he shouldn't be in the industry.
He doesn't deserve it. Therapy doesn't erase the things he's done. His career deserves to be dead. If he truly was sorry and cured, then he would understand why his career is over and he doesn't deserve it back. This is just another instance of a liar claiming to have "seen the light" because they're sorry they got caught.... not sorry that they did anything wrong.
To clarify the Chris Niosi subject, the stupid reason was he got fired for revealing he was voicing the character and violating his NDA, which is a pretty stupid reason. In Japan, these types of agreements are taken far more seriously than in the west. The other stuff was just a kick in the nuts.

Ok, hot take everyone: Sutherland's turn as Solid Snake actually wasn't half bad. To be clear I still think Hayter was a better Solid Snake, and he has the legacy behind him too, but if you disconnect Hayter as Snake in your mind, Sutherland actually did a decent job. I don't feel like the game's voice work was brought down by Sutherland's inclusion. Maybe a bit by Hayter's absence, but that isn't really Sutherland's fault.
No if anything it seems like as slope said it was personal with Kojima. Kojima did not want or like Hayter and I'm sure tried every chance he could to drop him. Unfortunately as much as an auteur as Kojima claims to be I've also heard him doing disgusting behavior towards a female actress on death stranding so it doesn't particularly surprise me.
I don't thin Sutherland was bad myself. My only issue was that they made him(Venom Snake) such a blank slate. One of the things I really enjoy about the Snakes is what they think about what's going on and their personal beliefs.
No disrespect to Sutherland at all. He did a fine job with the role. Kojima is the one I've got a problem with. When someone takes a pay cut to see that the rest of the team is properly compensated, and has served well in a beloved role for game after game despite insult after insult from the primadonna running the show who is so insufferable the company fired him over it, it doesn't matter how good Sutherland was. Kojima spit in Hatter's face to give the role to someone else out of spite. That's like booting Michael Shanks out of Stargate. Doesn't matter that Vorin Nemec was good in a similar role. Nemec definitely didn't deserve the hate he got for it. But he was never going to be Daniel Jackson, and the execs writing Shanks out really pissed people off.
Sutherland did a good job all things considered. I don't think it's really a hot take. I just think Kojima hated the campiness of Hayter's voice. Dude's a total cinephile. I'm sure he wanted someone to take the role "seriously" and Hayter's snake voice is too campy for his liking. Once MGS really took off, I'm sure it grated on him more and more as the years went on but I mean come on, Hayter's voice fits perfectly with the ridiculous nature of every single MGS entry. I like Kojima's work, I really do. The person himself has had me raise my eyebrows on more than one occasion though.
I found Sutherland's voice acting in the game to be mediocre. Most of the time he is just OK, and the only scene where I felt any real emotion coming from him was the "You are all diamonds" speech-
I think the Yakuza actor getting in trouble for drugs was stupid, but you need to remember that in Japan, getting caught with them is a death sentence for your career, whereas in Western countries you just get a slap on the wrist pretty much and continue on (unless it was something really bad). David Hayter had been complaining about how much damage the "Snake voice" was doing to his throat as far back as 1998, so it's completely unsurprising that he was always being asked to audition for the role (they want to make sure he can still do the voice) or that they were trying to recast him (1. Actor safety, get someone who can do the voice without injuring themselves 2. Actors complaining about how much harm a role causes them is a bad look for producers). As much as I respect and am thankful for Hayter giving us that iconic voice, you can't spent 15 years complaining about a role causing you harm (and permanent injury in the case of MGS4) then also complain when your role is given to someone who can do the job without injuring themselves.

Here's another dumb one: All of the FF7R characters got recast in the English dub because "advent children was later on the timeline" except even _Rick Gomez_ got recast in spite of also voicing Zack in Crisis Core and some of the VAs also voiced alternate versions of the characters who were the same age as they were in the original FF7 such as the Dissidia series, Kingdom Hearts and World of Final Fantasy (although Zack was based on his appearance in Crisis Core in KHBBS and WoFF (Dissidia Opera Omina lacks an English dub) due to him kind of being dead in the original FF7, which really makes Gomez getting recast even dumber)... Also the Japanese Advent Children cast was kept in the Japanese dub of FF7R so...
It's even more stupid when you remember that Cloud and Sephiroth weren't dubbed in Smash Bros because of contracts saying that they couldn't be replaced nor use pseudonyms.
Wouldnt say it's stupid. They have said in interviews that they were going to go with the AC cast but wanted everything fresh for the remake. Another theory is unionization of the older actors.
@@ConnorJG76 What's even more dumb is it's not later on in the timeline as they've made up different timelines, so it wouldn't matter. It wasn't even that many years later for people's voices to alter when already adults. I wonder why David Warner didn't reprise Sark and the MCP in Kingdom Hearts 2 as he is also known for doing voice work on various cartoons. He also co stared with Billy Zane in Titanic seen right here 2:51 pulling his gun out of his jacket. RIP Legend.
Yeah, one of his most iconic cartoon roles was that of Ra's Al Ghul in the 90s Batman The Animated Series. The character was pretty much unknown outside of the comic audience until that show and different incarnations of Ra's appeared in the Dark Knight trilogy and Arrow. The writing of Batman TAS and Warner's memorable voice performances as Ra's really gave the character a lot more popularity.
To be fair, looking at the selection of VA presented here, JonTron wouldn't be too much far off. He voiced one of Yooka Laylee characters, but one infamous Q&A happened, and he was patched out on day 0 patch.
The far East holds artists to far stricter standards. Korea is known for this too. One super popular actor once had an angry altercation and hit an old man - outrage was so big, he actually shaved his hair and lived as a buddhist monk in some remote mountain for a year as redemption, before coming back.
Numbers 5 - 3 were more so based on criminal allegations rather than stupid reasons. Also, I wasn't aware that David getting fired from playing Solid Snake was Kojima's decision and not Konami's. Though it was easy to think otherwise considering what modern Konami is like.
@@jsmith3946 But he said they were fired for stupid reasons, meaning the people firing them did it out of stupidity. It doesn't refer to the actors themselves.
Years ago Wendee Lee, and a couple of other know (GOOD) Anime/Game, voice actors were saying that they felt they were being pushed out of the industry and replaced by TV/Movie Ego Actors just so that studio can throw big names around to attract a bigger audience. More and more of todays voice actors are acting like divas, trying to get rid of each other, don't want to be in the same room of each other (Old vs New Dragonball Z voice actors just to name one example) This industry has gone bonkers... buuuut, the same goes for a lot of other creative industries as well.
My least favorite change for silly reasons was the removal of Peter Dinklage as the floating eyeball Droid (I forget the name) in Destiny because... he was too robotic?
On a related note to no 5, one of Makio Inoue's last voice acting roles just so happened to be in Kingdom Hearts 3. A reprisal of his role as the same character (Master Eraqus) in Birth By Sleep, nine years previously. That, in fact, turned out to be, along with his reprisal of his most iconic role as none other than *Captain HARLOCK* in Super Robot Wars T the same year (2019 for those wondering), as he passed away before the year was out. But what a final send off it was.
Nintendo (and other gaming companies like Gearbox) not wanting to work with unions is due to their own unwillingness work with unions to figure out pay/provide workers with adequate work environments. Voice actors in particular are always going to be taken advantage of far easier than on screen actors, since it's easier to find a sound a like than it is to find a look (and also sometimes sound) a like. There's been cases of VAs not even being told what game they're going to be acting in and in that case- how are they supposed to know how much money they should be paid? Unions help workers navigate negotiations for salary and protect their rights over all, helping them not be taken advantage of by large corporations who want to cut corners by underpaying VAs. Their rules are meant to protect workers and Nintendo's unwillingness to work with them is the dumb part.
I only found out recently from the channel Final Fantasy Union that we lost our iconic English voice actors from FF7's and Kingdom Hearts' franchises for Remake due to feeling they were too old for the roles, and yet Japan has had the same actors/actresses for those same roles for decades. I will admit that the main cast is very solid though in Remake...I'm just forever salty at the loss of George Newbern, lol.
@@JustinLeeper Cloud in Remake sounds extremely close to his voice in Advent Children, and it fits his haughty attitude in my opinion. The new guy for Sephiroth, however...there's a balance between being sensual and threatening that I feel Newbern can convey in his acting that I feel the new actor didn't, lol. I won't say they can't, but that level of detail wasn't given in the game. Hoping it gets better by part 2.
What stupid reason was there for the recasting of Kratos? The actual reason seemed fair enough to me. God of War 2018 was supposedly the first in the series to use the same actor for both mo-cap and voicing and Christopher Judge just fit that role better.

Wow I really didn’t knew that Hideo hated David Hater back then and he tried multiple times to replace him even in the sequels. Now I knew why he replaced him in MGS V.
I think "hate" is a strong word. Re-auditioning for your role is pretty commonplace in Japan. I had a 1-yr contract for Universal Studios Japan and had to re-audition about 3 months in. And if Kojima really hated Hayter, he wouldn't have re-cast him many times. I also worked with Kojima, and found him to be a bright, funny, chill person. The best director I ever worked for.
although the title could have been worded better since some of the things you mentioned are not actually stupid reasons this was a fun video, didn't know that dave hater and kojima didn't like each other.
I would personally say that while it is an entertaining video, this whole list would need redone to follow some kind of theme. Billy Zane's reason wasn't really that stupid nor did he himself do anything stupid as far as I personally can tell. He just took part in a controversial movie even though he didn't particularly agree with it outside of finding his character interesting, and people don't like controversy. Guilt by association is really the only stupid thing about that. Steve Burton's case was just more unfortunate than anything. One can say that the contracts were stupid, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was a reason for him to have a contract stating that a work has to use his real name and not a pseudonym. I think David Hayter's reason is the only one that is somewhat stupid. Kojima was simply a Hayter. Yeah, I know that pun was bad, lol. Pierre Taki and Chris Niosi simply did stupid crap, so their reasons for getting fired was not that stupid. As such, I would say that if this were to be remade, I would say to either put in actors who actually got fired for stupid reasons like David Hayter or put in actors who did stupid stuff like Pierre and Chris.
I didn't mind Sutherland playing venom snake, as technically (spoiler alert) it's not really Big Boss. David hayter is an absolute gent, the funny thing is Videogame acting is just a part time gig as he is a major Hollywood screenplay writer. If Metal gear solid ever came back (I doubt it) but if it did, I'd love David to return.
I guess that's the real reason Japan has less crime; You get shut out of everything & no amount of money will buy your way out of a tarnished reputation, just like being an American in the 1800s... Not that any of that deterred 18th century Americans from seeing spouse murder as the reputation-saving alternative to divorce.
Its 2022. Please dont ever call Death Stranding a "Walking Simulator." The uninitiated stopped calling it that over a year ago. It's an art piece about connections, living and afterlife. It has trucks and reverse motor trikes too.
Hold up! You forgot to mention Billy Zane's role in one of the best movies ever made - Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight! It was the apogee of his career. And the movie is way underrated. Well, okay, you've shown a clip, but it doesn't count. I'm, like, outraged and ready to, uh, cancel you for this unforgiva... I can't even finish this sentence, the gagging interrupts.
I would love for someone to approach David Hayter to record all the lines from metal gear solid 5 ground zero and the phantom pain so we can mod them into the game. If David would have been recasted back when Snake eater came out it would have made a little bit more sense. Yes he's a clone of big boss but there's no reason why he could have had a difference plus if you account for the twist in the phantom pain it would make sense to have a different voice actor. The thing is though metal gear has never really been and around of reasonable causality. It's an absurd game series with absurd characters and it's a real damn shame that we couldn't get our snake to give one last final performance.
That someone would have to somehow get hold of David (He's incredibly busy writing scripts and screenplays. He wrote the screenplay for the first two X-Men movies, for example.), ford eventual legal grievances with Konami and pay whatever price David asks for, which could well be a 5 to 6 figure sum considering the risks involved.
Spoiler for MGS5 : its hardly a spoiler now but you are not Solid Snake or Big Boss in MGSV, you only discover at the end... I think its kind of weird to argue he was replaced as there is an IN GAME explanation as to why at the end....his voice is the one thing that would not have been altered right? ----note I love DH I love him... just pointing out ---watch the commercial "To Michael" from Sony if you want to see my fav moment with him as snake.
I'd believe that if it weren't for the fact that the Japanese voice actor of snake is still the same, even on the phantom pain. So yeah, kojima is to blame here (at least in my opinion)
FWIW BIg Boss does indeed have some voice lines in MGSV. Not many - overall Sutherland had *very* few lines for an entry in a series known for its wordiness - but there are at least two or three "areas" where he speaks.
Oh my God Kirbopher. He also voiced Reigen in the English dub of MP100 and also voiced Alex from YIIKMAN (which is funny considering that character is as much of a loser as he is)
Yeah gonna echo everyone else and say you should probably change it to 5 Wild Reasons or something. And while I'm not saying Flynn is 100% innocent, you should have probably covered that court case that did vindicate him a little
I mean...in the end, replacing David Hayter in MGS5 makes sense considering that Punished Snake is not actually Big Boss. Unless the actual Big Boss in MGS5 was also not David Hayter. MGS5 Ground Zero, however, was Big Boss and thus...should not have been anyone but David Hayter.
I love Kojima's games and while think what he has the right to choose who he wants to voice his characters.....I can't help but feel a little disappointed in the way he treated David Hayter. I mean I heard Hayter has no hard feelings towards Kojima but I still feel like it was sad to see Kojima not like him.
Billy Zane is one of my favorite actors. Some pretty bad movies under his belt but some good too. Land Speed was actually a decent movie. I've had an NDA with Nintendo for a voice role (nothing fun, 1-2 Switch) and they are NO JOKE. Though being a shitty person is way worse than violating an NDA.
Japan as a whole takes NDAs very seriously. Several times, I was told I couldn't even talk about games I'd worked on AFTER they'd been released!
So that's the reason why there is no English VA for Cloud in Smash. I've always wondered but never bothered to search the Internet to find out why.
No, absolutely not.

lolo mo panalo
At the very least, Niosi (from what I remember) did admit his behavior and started attending anger management a couple of years ago

There's no real reason the main character in Death Stranding had to look exactly like Reedus, other than cos Kojima still has delusions of film making rather than fun game making.

The writing of Batman TAS and Warner's memorable voice performances as Ra's really gave the character a lot more popularity.

I only found out recently from the channel Final Fantasy Union that we lost our iconic English voice actors from FF7's and Kingdom Hearts' franchises for Remake due to feeling they were too old for the roles, and yet Japan has had the same actors/actresses for those same roles for decades. anime is like "moose" or "deer" it is its own plural "animes" just plain ISN'T A WORD.
Hayter's day will come for working with Bryan Singer while Quinton catches the flak.
Ohhh making my Saturday better… always look fw to your content and first lol
6:16 NGL, completely forgot this guy existed.
Some of these really don't seem like stupid reasons for removal at all, tbh.
I think he ment some of the actors for doing stupid shit
although the title could have been worded better since some of the things you mentioned are not actually stupid reasons this was a fun video, didn't know that dave hater and kojima didn't like each other.
I didn't mind Sutherland playing venom snake, as technically (spoiler alert)
it's not really Big Boss. David hayter is an absolute gent, the funny thing is Videogame acting is just a part time gig as he is a major Hollywood screenplay writer. If Metal gear solid ever came back (I doubt it) but if it did, I'd love David to return.
Problem with that argument is that the japanese VA didn't get sacked, Venom Snake was still voiced by good ol' Akio Ōtsuka.
6. Reuben Langdon as Ken, for having correct opinions and contrubuting negatively towards Capcom ESG score
Excellent video, very informative.
You fuckin', hodunk Podunk, well, then, motherfuckers!
Bro you know Demon Knight? That movie rules!
@@kakizakichannel One of the gems I keep rewatching along with something like Braindead and The Evil Dead.
Japan : weed bad. Ruin your whole life over it.
Alcohol: literally the best thing ever. Can’t have a social life without it.
Make it make sense please
My headcannon : Venom Snake doesn't sound like Big Boss because he isn't Big Boss. Just what I tell myself. David Hayter will always be my Snake.
Approach him with a few thousand dollars you mean.
@@c4nnske Try a few tens of thousands.
It’s obvious that you aren’t Solid Snake in MGS5 because if you were then you would be playing as a 12 year old.
I've spent months trying to figure out why you keep Blokus with your vinyl. Sort it out Slopes.
David Hayter effing RULES. Kojima is nuts.
Can you imagine if they changed Guybrush Threepwood for no reason?! 😊 🤔 😁
Was #3 really "stupid reasons"? Those reasons sounded pretty legit to me.
Where did you get your shirt from? I love it! :D
I wonder why Hideo Kojima hated David Hayter
he worked with bryan singer
Oh my God Kirbopher. He also voiced Reigen in the English dub of MP100 and also voiced Alex from YIIKMAN (which is funny considering that character is as much of a loser as he is)
great vid again i like your content
Cheers elliot
Yeah gonna echo everyone else and say you should probably change it to 5 Wild Reasons or something.
And while I'm not saying Flynn is 100% innocent, you should have probably covered that court case that did vindicate him a little
Are you going to do a kickscammers episode about the Intelevision Amico?
Sexual harassment is a "stupid" reason to be fired over, Slopes?
Go touch grass
I think with those instances it's the person being stupid rather than the reason being stupid, but it could have been phrased a bit better...
Did he do it whilst working on the game? Did he gain a criminal record?
Well crap on a broom stick, where I live it's nothing to walk into a fast food restaurant and see Meth Heads working the cash registers.
No, I will not do as you say, Slope, I will call a spade as a spade, for a harshly told truth is far better than a kindly told lie.
Billy Zane is one of my favorite actors.
Some pretty bad movies under his belt but some good too. Land Speed was actually a decent movie. Think one of my favorites was a movie he did along the lines of mortal kombat called invincible. Not to mention Tales from the crypt Demon knight (though not his best work lol).
No mention of the voice actors who were caught having Parler accounts? Fire Emblems is Nintendo's own RWBY, a cesspool of a franchise.
I always thought that hayter story was just a bad rumor, but considering it was hideo kojima...yeah.
