I have a box full of stuff to put in one. That's as far as I've got. I do have a small folio jokingly referred to as my "kitchen grimoire" which has recipes and rituals scrawled in it; probably about as much as I need!
As an artist, I have always loved making books and journals. So for me it is a necessity. However, I create my own correspondence, it does not contain spells at all really more recipes, it mostly contains knowledge that resonates with me, or I find interesting, but it is also a place I can go to look at something beautiful. As you said, not everyone's brain works that way, and I have learned over the years to embrace imperfection. I also love the fact that my book will not last forever. 💜
Loved this so much, thank you! I totally agree with most of what you said, too! I absolutely enjoy seeing what you do and create, and I enjoy watching all those amazing 'junk journal' videos etc. That said ... most of it is NOT me! LOL I'm not a paper-crafter or a visual artist etc. I'm a writer. I long ago realized that if I was too 'precious' with journals -- even the gorgeous splendid ones I still buy -- then nothing would get put in them. So I write -- in myriad fonts with often lots of colors and inks and pencil doodles with the occasional 'transferred' image. A 'grimoire' for me is simply a place to embed bits of 'wisdom' I've accrued through the years whether in magical practice or devotionals or divination; I don't get tangled up about making it a single tome, although I do have a couple 'special' books that, after 30 years of practice, I'm now creating-- and that includes a sort of 'card catalogue' in journal format where I reference books in my vast library that are or have been particularly powerful to me on my own spiritual path and I write about why they've been so (I have a brief video on my channel of that book). I figure if someone down the road is interested, they'll wander through my Forest of Script Creations and they will discover what they are meant to. Again, thoroughly enjoyed your balanced insights on this topic. Blessings!
Hi! Great video, thank you for making it. I started off with a 3 ring binder many years ago. I always wanted that perfect grimoire from the movies. It took a awhile but I used that 3 ring binder, among other things to create a smaller scrapbook grimoire. I love it because it has so much of my energy. In it. It has its own spell. It's easy to use and definitely not perfect!
📚❤ Thank you for the great info! I really love it when folks mention that it's up to a person's gnosis, but still keep in mind that some things are poisonous/harmful, so always keep an eye out to what's known. The added info of the books with removable pages is outstanding info too, since I've seen so many folks "scrapbook" their grimoires/BoS to the point that they can't close it flat. Thank you!⭐
I started with the Etsy style grimoire but ended up moving to a book of shadows, made from a 6 ring binder. I add paper as needed because I love to scrapbook so the pages of my book of shadows is part journal and part art. 📒
📕 📚 I agree with you that the most important thing is to develop our own personal gnosis. I remember buying the big book of correspondances by T. Susan Chang… I was overwhelmed by the amount of information. I returned it and thought maybe this spiritual path was not for me after all. Eventually, I realized that I wanted to pursue this avenue but needed to revisit all I was hearing about and reading in books. Respecting who I am and what I’m not… I don’t think I really found my true path (if such a thing exists) but I at least am more aware of my needs 😊.
I love to hear you kept going. I think it’s a journey. I’m not sure that we’ll ever get there or know that this is the one. I do know that discovering myself is the greatest gift and adventure.
Good thoughts about grimes, especially regarding whether or when you should create one. I have to admit I’m a sucker for all the mixed media grimoire videos and I’ve been inspired to start a grimoire plus a fancy book of shadows, but I do feel bogged down by them sometimes - it takes a lot of time to make a beautiful spread! Plus I agree with you - why reinvent the wheel when there are so many good resources out there? I suppose I’ll keep going little by little as I continue to learn and practice. 📚📓📒
📗 I started my grimoir last week in a 4 inch binder 😅 i put a few packs of notebook paper in the front then blank printer paper in the back. I will use the notebook paper to create my skeleton of what i want in it and then down the road when I'm more comfortable with what works for me i will tranfer over to the blank paper so i can decorate it. I am being extremely patient with myself and taking my time. I put in a table of contents and didn't put pressure on myself to go in order or start in any particular place. I don't make myself worl on it daily. I get to it when I can. So far, I have added spells, rituals, a moon journal, and a tarot journal into it. I like that if i decide to add/remove something, I can do that easily and i can switch the order if necessary too! Thanks for the video, I had NOT considered acid-free paper 😅 you gave me some ideas!
I’m so glad I could help! One of the biggest problems I have is feeling like I’m putting things in the wrong order. I started writing ideas at the top of the page in pencil in my solid book, so that later I could fill those pages in and there would be some kind of order to it, lol.
📚 your drawings are beautiful...been wanting to start one for years now just been afraid to do so, but, I think I have finally decided that it will be everything mixed together...journal entries, dreams, recipes, garden notes, shadow work prompts, maybe some art, photos -- just a real mash up cause that's just who I am and that is how my mind works on a regular basis 😊 thank you for sharing
I made a 3 inch post bound book with a spine. I've got 165 sheet protectors in it currently; it is currently mostly empty. I've been adding my notes on spell work, divination, and anything else pertaining to my spiritual path. When I have some free time I get out my collection of pattern paper, washi tape, dip pen inks, and stickers to copy those notes on to nicer paper/make it "pretty".
This sounds like my ideal solution - can I ask where you get your posts from, please? I've got a post bound scrapbook (12x12) but the posts aren't very big and I know I'll need something really huge (wanted to incorporate my tarot stuff).
I’ve a binder file and all my papers of interest go there. I’m excited to turn them into something I can read thru and be inspired! I’m enjoying reading some Katherine Genet books and remember now that you recommended them!! Thank you 😊
It was a huge joy for me. I am actually really mourning the loss of my kids right now. it's weird. They have been out of the house forever, but suddenly it "real" to me!
I have a old old, book of shadows that has morphed into a collection of symbols, an ancient language book, I have a couple art grimoire books, Tarot grimoire, I am currently on a nature art Grimoire journey. that should keep me busy for a good year or two. I loved all the book recommendations! so inspiring.
@@naturalwitchery Mine is all about learning through the suit's colors, and symbolism, so I didn't have to memorize the cards. i drew it all out took so many notes, I love it, never to silly !!
I started one to consolidate all my journals into one journal concentrating on different aspects I like more. I've made so many mistakes but i find that charming. It shows that a person put that together
I have all the tools to create a Book of Shadows & Grimoire, but sadly have not done hardly anything yet. I use sticky notes & lists in my daily planner to keep track of spells & rituals right now. Hoping to find the motivation to do more on my books. Thanks for a great video. 📚
55yo semi-practicing witch from Down Under here. I started a tarot/dream journal in my early 30's, didn't touch it for years and about 5yrs ago it morphed into my grimoire - the same with my Book of Shadows (aka my Book of Self). I dive into both only when I feel the need as my daily practice is not something I need spells or written rituals for, like you I only really go to them now when I really need to focus or have a truly burning desire to have a specific thing recorded. What I do love doing is looking back on both of them, they're small A5 tactile notebooks that I've glued, stapled, sewn, painted and drawn into and truly feel like the me I was, the me I currently am, and the me I hope to be ❤
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on grimoires. About a month ago I made up my mind to use a notebook to simply jot down what I found important in the books I have. I am an artist, creating a fancy grimoire sounds cool, but not something I have the time or inclination for. I just need a place to put the tidbits so I can pass on my books (keeping some that hold too much to jot down as you had suggested). I have a copy of Llewellyn’s Complete Book of Correspondences as well, I rarely use it. Looking forward to your next class!
📖 ✍️✨ Thank you for this video! I tend to work in my journals/Book(s) of Shadows but, maybe one day, I’ll transfer any little gems of knowledge out from there. What I had never thought before - I have collected recipes (some family traditions, some my own traditions) in a book. Each of the recipes are special to me and this really is my cooking Grimoire! I’ve never thought of it that way before 😅.
I will sometimes trace things. There’s nothing wrong with using tools to make the book that you want or to create something that you enjoy! Thank Goddess , we don’t all have to be perfect.
I found the first book on one of them apps and I'm sure I could find the second one on the same app but I'm not going to look for it because I already have that book I purchased it a few years ago and I have to agree it is a great book!!!!!!!!
📓 personally I am a holistic witchy person. The things I put in my journals are what I feel most important to. Connection is the key, it’s the feeling inside that makes the magic. I am into energy, chakras, words are important to me yes but it’s the feelings that make the magic happen. Colors can bring more energy into the pages also. I do not agree with everything I read either but it’s a personal preference and isn’t that what it’s all about. It’s a personal piece and that is what is important. What feels right to me may not for someone else and that’s ok. ❤
I have 2 large grimoires but I also have many small ones still empty I started these after 2 years of my craft but don't use them now they are just for decorating my room. I use a small journal for writing gothic poetry
Hi and thank you for this thoughtful video! I have been practicing for over 50 years and have created things myself (spell-wise) as well as taken from other sources. I am ready to make my grimoire and your excellent points have given me some ideas as to how I might proceed. I am a junk journaler and intend to create the book as well. Your point about acid-free paper is an important one, but also the idea of making the book and maybe scanning the pages, should I need to re-print them at some point is a good one. Thanks again and BB.
I've been creating pages on Canva for mine for 3 years, lol. I keep adding to it so I haven't printed it. Though, I have a rad plan for what I'm going to do once I do print it out. Great, well thought out video! xo, A
I have one of her books and it's called Under the Bramble Arch: A Folk Grimoire of Wayside Plant Lore and Practicum and I actually bought that book twice
I've completed 3 grimoires so far. They look like your black grimoire with the elastic. They're not perfect. Just ink writing with curly letters here and there 😂 and a few drawings and stickers. I was a bit of a magpie at first and put so many things in my grimoire from Chakras, science about vibrations, all the moons in a year, info about spiritual animal guides, crystals, Goddesses, plants,... ... ....so i filled the pages very fast. Now i've honed my practice a little bit i find that my grimoire is filling up more slowly. Blessed be.
I have one of those beautiful hand-bound books sitting on a shelf, waiting for the ‘perfect’ that never comes. I picked a journal I liked the feel of, and use it to jot down ideas, spell bits, evolve bigger spells I want to tackle, notes to self. I have a tarot journal I keep as often as I can, but not daily. I have digital witchy books more to gather information because it is so much easier to search a doc for that recurring dream that panned out or ‘hey didn’t i do a spell for this last month?’. I loved this video and your take on grimoires! I used to feel like I was failing as a witch if I didn’t have one, but now I’m more interested in leaving behind a trail of breadcrumbs that will have relatives wondering ‘what in hell was this woman into?’
I have more than one grimore each one is different as a matter of fact I started my first one before I even knew what it was called each grimore I have it for a different thing mine are not fancy most of mine are either notebooks or three ring binders I have like three that are actual fancy-looking grimores but there very small compared to what most people think of when they think of one I sure as he don't have one that looks like the grimore from the TV Show Charmed
I have 3 journals for 3 different reasons. Have started them and pause cause I've been doing other things and of course doing my practice. In 2025, I am.doing a planner of ritual/practice, and crafting. It sounds alot but it really isn't!! By the way. I've seen the journal with the Moon Phase, and I don't need that journal.cause I have others, but still like to look at it!!
Oh dear. I have bought soo many of those pretty Etsy journals (and ephemera, and....) thanks for mentioning Pagan Crafting; I ordered a few things from her this morning : - | I have started and stopped creating a BoS too many times to count; I think my first was in the early '90's. My perfectionism + utter lack of visual art skills halted any progress. Instead, I'm going to journal my spiritual interests (Druidry via OBOD; animism, spirits of the land-genius loci-, animals, and hearth/green witchery, crystals), plus any spells that I try. Lastly, I, too, LOVE orange. My car is orange. I can't wear it, but I'll drive around in it. I signed up for your event on the 15th, and looking forward to it very much, and meeting other like-minded souls. Blessings!
This is such a good video! I love that you also aren't into the aesthetic looking books they are too intimidating most people are not going to use those. I use paperblanks I think they are called they are pretty looking on the outside but inside are just lined pages. I use them for writing about my gods so everything is together for each. I also have an art journal which is art paper... I don't bother writing out general stuff I can just Google if I need the information. I should maybe do a video about my books?
Part of my problem is I have too many projects I'm working on, not all of them Craft-related, such as building a Zen garden; tending to my veggie garden, trying to start an herb garden (this is my 3rd of 4th attempt!), etc., planting all those trees I got from Lowes that were marked down; redoing the fish tank, fooling around with aquaponics and finishing up projects I started 10, 15, or even 20 years ago (yep! That long!)
Oh my Goddess! Laughing at the planting discounted trees you bought. Blushing a little there thinking of the trees that need to go out! There is a season for everything!
I love having actual books in my favorite kind or hardback I don't mind if it's a soft back another word to paper back book if it's a large volume but with that said I don't have much money so I have a couple of apps that have hundreds thousands of books on the there app and that's how I do my reading cuz I find that I can get 2 book for the price I pay to get a subscription to them couple apps I do
📙 Hi Haxa, I loved this! I appreciate you going over all the reasons why we might want to create an amazing grimoire. I think it sounds intriguing, but I also thought a grimoire was the same thing as a Book of Shadows! 😂 I guess the simple journal is best for me. I enjoy drawing and painting animals and plants and crafting anything with a Nature theme. With limited time for creating art, I am not sure I should create a grimoire, as well. Also, those are some amazing book recommendations!! I'll have to check out all of them! 😃 📚✨
For occult properties, correspondences, & usages of plants one would be hard pressed to do better than Schulke's The Green Mysteries...if the price is prohibitive more economical but by no means less useful options are Sedir's Occult Botany, Modern Witchcraft Guide to Magical Herbs by Judy Ann Nock & finally, Flower Magic of the Druids by Jon G. Hughes is extremely informative. Lastly, given your appreciation for Boyer check out Troy Books many excellent (& reasonably priced) titles.
As an artist I love that you mentioned acid free paper. I think mentioning acid free pens; archival tape, glue, gesso and other archival products would help as well. We want these books to last many years to come!
I just use a college notebook with tabs but now I might want to use Canva but I'm a beginner witch so I just write in it about the information I'm learning.
If I created a grimoire now it would become irrelevant in less than a year.😂 With my irregular, ever changing practice I just opt for a Book of Shadows. After splotching ink, smearing writing and trying to draw sigils in those fancy journals, and abandoning them after they were "ruined", I found those college ruled notebook with pockets were the best. It makes it easier to rip out and recycle pages that don't meet my low standard.🕯📒
Thanks for this vlog, I want to write and craft something for next year but more on a slow journalling level, however I do want to incorporate magical elements, maybe include some nice hand drawings or paintings , even some rituals, recipes, plant/herb info (gardening), but mostly writing how all of this together with my surroundings really affect me on a deep and honest level....not sure if this would be called a grimoire, a book of shadows or what 😅 help?? 😂😂❤ My quest this cominh Yule season is to find a nice, comfy book to write in 😉 📖📘📗📖
The quest for the perfect journal is always a lovely one! Sounds like you have a combination book there. And who makes up these rules anyway? You’ll be making the book that’s just right for you.
How many of you want to start, or have started a grimoire?
I have thought about it, but I don't feel a real need. I have no one to pass one on too.
I’m on my 3rd one.
I just started one last week. This video is right on time lol
I don’t do spells so… 🤷♀️
I have a box full of stuff to put in one. That's as far as I've got. I do have a small folio jokingly referred to as my "kitchen grimoire" which has recipes and rituals scrawled in it; probably about as much as I need!

I am thinking of doing this for my Book of Wisdom I want to create. Then I can print it!
Love your perspective! I signed up for the 12/15 event ❤
I’m so glad you could join us!
I use a post-bound system for my ritual book, which has the script and formula for spells and rituals that I do.
That’s a great system!
I have one of her books and it's called Under the Bramble Arch: A Folk Grimoire of Wayside Plant Lore and Practicum and I actually bought that book twice
I have under the Bramble arch as well!
Blessed be.
Curly script is lovely! Not perfect is just right❤️
Another great video. Thanks again! 📖📓
I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you! ❤
You're welcome 😊
The last line of this post is PRICELESS!
I get how it can be so easy to be pulled in different directions!
Oh dear. I have bought soo many of those pretty Etsy journals (and ephemera, and....) thanks for mentioning Pagan Crafting; I ordered a few things from her this morning : - |
I have started and stopped creating a BoS too many times to count; I think my first was in the early '90's.
Blessings!
Fellow orange lover! If my car had come in orange I would be driving one too!
People love to see what you are doing❤️
📙 I do not grimoire...yet?? It doesn't feel right yet. Thank you for sharing this information.
The magic comes when it is ready. 🧙♀️
I love having actual books in my favorite kind or hardback I don't mind if it's a soft back another word to paper back book if it's a large volume but with that said I don't have much money so I have a couple of apps that have hundreds thousands of books on the there app and that's how I do my reading cuz I find that I can get 2 book for the price I pay to get a subscription to them couple apps I do
Christmas 🎄 🌲 ❤

📙 Hi Haxa, I loved this! I appreciate you going over all the reasons why we might want to create an amazing grimoire. I think it sounds intriguing, but I also thought a grimoire was the same thing as a Book of Shadows! 😂
I guess the simple journal is best for me. I enjoy drawing and painting animals and plants and crafting anything with a Nature theme. With limited time for creating art, I am not sure I should create a grimoire, as well.
Also, those are some amazing book recommendations!! I'll have to check out all of them! 😃 📚✨
You can always just draw and paint a grimoire! It can be anything you want it to be! I'm sure you will find a way to do it your way
📚 I've got a few grimoires around the house, I really need to combine them into one book, though.
Or keep adding to all three, lol!
Thanks for the great book recommendations! Lol, I avoid Troy books. I always spend too much money when I’m there. It’s the shipping that gets me.
As an artist I love that you mentioned acid free paper. I think mentioning acid free pens; archival tape, glue, gesso and other archival products would help as well. We want these books to last many years to come!
Archival tape?! I have to look this up!!!!!!
I just use a college notebook with tabs but now I might want to use Canva but I'm a beginner witch so I just write in it about the information I'm learning.
Canva is a really cool tool for grimoire making!
@@naturalwitchery Canva is usually my go to place for making graphics.
I also have the grimoire book it's not a book I have read yet with all my books that I actually own I haven't read all of them
thank you :)
You're welcome! 😊
If I created a grimoire now it would become irrelevant in less than a year.😂
With my irregular, ever changing practice I just opt for a Book of Shadows. After splotching ink, smearing writing and trying to draw sigils in those fancy journals, and abandoning them after they were "ruined", I found those college ruled notebook with pockets were the best. It makes it easier to rip out and recycle pages that don't meet my low standard.🕯📒
😂😂😂
📕 no I have not started one yet.

Happy Yule tide season
I'm more of a necronomicon kind of guy myself ♏🦂♏
There's a book I haven't heard talk about since the 80s....
@naturalwitchery Yeah well mine is very different from H.P Love crafts I put my own personal flare on it
📚📚📚
glad you made it!

It’s always good to see you, Linda❤️
I don’t think a person needs anything to create a spell. Just do and think….. I’ve been practicing since I was 3
I definitely feel like people get caught up in the “things” rather than the practice.

That's not a grimoire. It's scrapbooking.
Oh! The Grimoire police stopped by!
@naturalwitchery no, what you are telling people is a lie.
