Exoprimal is that rare, long-odds bet from a major AAA publisher: a fully priced, multiplayer focused PVEVP game where you pilot exosuits and fight dinosaurs who fall from the sky like some sort of bizarre weather event. Honestly, it's like World War Z with pvp elements, or EDF 4.1 or EDF 5 with pvp elements. The other main difference is neither have a "push the payload" component. Both have customizable classes with differing playstyles, hordes of enemies, co-op shooting gameplay etc. I would argue for certain that EDF does it better. I would say World War Z does it equally well. Without a dedicated PVE mode, like the one where 2 teams race and then if the showdown is guaranteed to be a bossfight, or even just not doing the showdown at the end, but still doing the rest of the mission, that's fine. It will probably more than double the player count. But more often than not, people sign on to a PVP or PVE experience and this hybrid is going to end poorly.
the dinosaurs crashing against the map geometry and the player barricades like an actual wave of liquid is just awesome. If the story mode is atleast a dozen hours of wacky scifi nonsense Ill buy it just for that.

Go back and look at World War Z gameplay at some point. That plus the whole tower mechanic makes it pretty intimidating. But that had an advantage over this game, being the survival aspect with limited healing and ammo. Not knowing when you're going to find supplies means you can't just spam like you can in this game, so you had to include a level of conservation and resource management that just isn't present here.

Hood: Outlaws & Legends, 25 players
Marauders: 1244 players
The Cycle: 1382 players
Scavengers: 2 players
The Hunt: 16305 players
Of the 5, only one seems like it has enough players for longer term sustainability.

Frankly Hunt is 80% PvP, 20% PvE
But at the same time that 20% PvE is what really makes it all the more special. Very unique blend, very difficult to pull off. But also it caters to the semi-hardcore tactical shooter crowd.

Lost Planet is a Capcom game that had a criminally underrated competitive multiplayer mode. My favorite PvP mode of all time actually. This gameplay actually looks extremely similar to it in the way you move and aim/shoot weapons.

This game was more fun than I expected it to be.
A pve v pve game mode where you don’t actually vs other players directly sounds great. Gambit without invading, yes please
In the final mode you do vs the other team though.
It also has invading... you can take control of a dinosaur and invade the enemy team
In my experience, devs that balance PvE and PvP at the same time breaks the game. It's a herculean task that 9 times out of 10 will only upset people.
MAYBE they can do it but idk.
Just have your damage, skills etc scale/behave differently whenever you're dealing with adds or players

@Ow_Hermit_Purple The issue is constantly allocating resources to achieve 'balance' or throwing balance to the curb to let everyone do silly crazy fun. I think the game leans into the latter but that also means a meta will be found and getting those PvP segments are gonna feel like crap.
It's not impossible to strike the perfect mixture but I'm going in with low expectations.
@@urazz7739 it will have multiple modes at launch. The mode in the beta is the combo of pve and pvp, and the other modes are pvp only or pve only.

@lurakin88 all reveals and trailers have revealed is pvp its all competition there is no mode to just kill dinosaurs without competing. This info of only pve has not been shown nor leaked I have already looked this up because I was interested in game till I found out it was pvp orientated
@derrick farbes the survey you take for the beta has a question dedicated to asking what mode you would want most prioritized to be out with launch and at least half of the options were pve only modes

I know absolutely nothing about this game other than the basic premise but it looks fun. Looking forward to playing it on GamePass.
It baffles me how Zombies and vampires have gotten ALL the attention in the industry and Dinosaurs next to none. It's one of the coolest creatures to encounter in a game and so many ideas and genres can be built around it.
I actually REALLY enjoyed the pve and pvp aspects of the mode we got to try. I'm a bit competitive in nature, so it was fun to have the last checkpoints for the objectives to be all out brawls against the other team. I played the console beta with my friend for the whole weekend, as many hours as we could have possibly put into it a day... Never got bored of it. I tried all the suits as well. They all are pretty fun to use and situational. I loved that you weren't restricted to whatever you chose at the beginning of the match and can change into another at any point. I'm excited to see what other modes they offer. Personally, my friend and I are going to buy it :)
The animations for the various skills and movement have me fucking mesmerised , the animators did a stellar job for this.
I'm so sad this game is PVP it was really exciting to see at and looked so hilariously fun and now it seems like its just going to be stressful and not worth a moment of time. Maybe they can do a PVE version sometime because it does look very fun in that aspect!

Oh man this sounds way cooler than I was expecting, definitely concerned about post launch support though given the history of these type of games.
I played the beta, only did a couple of matches but I really enjoyed it! I actually like the PvEvP aspect
This game is so damn fun. When it was announced, I legitimately laughed thinking the game was dumb and cheap. But the last trailer and this beta really sold me the B movie feel it has, and it delivers so much in terms of feedback and fun that I couldn't stop playing. Even in solo, I was completely sold. It has a Lost Planet vibe to it, and even if it's not balanced and sometimes messy, if they sort it out it's gonna be awesome. It's gonna be day one for me.

Maybe I’m just getting older, but PVP doesn’t interest me. I enjoy PVE where I work with other people to fend off hordes of enemies. Darktide is currently my jam, it gives me great Gears of War 3 feelings :)
I feel you man when I was younger PVP multiplayer was the reason I bought many games and couldn't justify only single player games but now its the opposite

I really, and I mean REALLY, enjoyed the PvE side of this game. I would easily have bought this day one if that's what this game was tailored to be. However it's clear that even if there is a PvE element to this game, removed from the PvP shenanigans, the PvE will suffer and be neglected because of their focus on the game and I can't really be asked to drop that kind of money for the game.

The GAMEPLAY which everyone seems to agree is fantastic.
Per the official website, the 'main story campaign' is dino survival, the PvEvP mode, not it's own single player mode. Basically cutscenes that unlock by finishing matches.
Can't wait to be told to skip them by my friends whenever I finish a match.

It's not a bad game, I just hope the more to it than the beta. There was 1 mode in the beta and that alone will not carry this game very far. I think it has a single player story mode but we'll have to see what it's about when it launches.
There's actually more than one mode in the game. The modes I saw was Domination, a capture the flag type mode, a move the payload mode and collect the nodes/dogtags mode.

on the otherhand was expecting id get the same take as Skill's Darktide review, surprized it isnt, its more tact compare to the previous gameplay-focused reviews.

Great preview! We just published our preview today and had a lot of the same takeaways! I was looking to see if we played in a match together last week, big fan!
When this was first revealed, I was so hyped because I thought it was a Earth Defense Force-like with Capcom-tier quality. With Capcom making so many hits these last few years, it had to be really good.
But since then, I learned that it was a competitive pvp game and so all my hype disappeared and I don't care anymore about it. It might end up being a really good game, but this is not what I'm looking for when I'm teased with raptor showers...

Cheers for the excellent review Ralph. As you say I'm very surprised to hear about the PvP here, and am a bit nervous about how that will go. But the gameplay looks fantastic fun and the PvP side looks like it has some great potential if Capcom can ride the bull and actually deliver it.
Played the beta and was absolutely surprised on how fun it was. The pvp sections were my favorite parts. Im sure there’s going to be balance issues but this isn’t an esport and shouldn’t be treated like it is. Just have fun with it. I’m very excited that this will be in game pass and I will definitely be playing when it launches. I’m just annoyed it’s not coming out until July.
If we could have the ability to always choose "giant boss 2 team co-op" finales, that would be super awesome. It feels so weird to add the PVP element. Guess we'll see.
i remember this game. super fun; the entire mode was about racing to to the finish point n it ends w/ a general pvp setup. Very fun once you get adjusted to the classes n what they do. From my understanding the classes have a ton of unlocks behind their levels but we weren't allowed to use them during the beta. The kits right now are at the very base level w/o any customization that comes w/ leveling the frames
It's almost always impressive what they can tinker with in the RE engine. Like outside of whether you're excited to play this game or not the props for the variety in what developers can do with the RE engine is well deserved

The PvP part isn't necessarily a problem for me, but I've been seeing comments about how it can end up negating you pve performance. It comes off like those tv episodes with a contest where the last round has a million points and so every round before it didn't matter
Well basically the final round decides if you win, but if you speed through the pve stuff you have a major advantage on most final objectives
Having put ~6 hours into the most recent beta, the PvE doesn't matter in the mode we were able to play. There's no challenge to it, and it results in a minor head start in the PvP finale if one team was able to clear it faster. But a team that's behind will very quickly regain the lead (and win) in that finale if they're better at PvP.
@@spacedout4061 the come back mechanic is too strong. It results in a scenario where winning to hard early makes it almost impossible to win later. By the end of the open beta I was already seeing people deliberately losing the second checkpoint so they could get comeback assistance. He didn’t mention it here but there are two different comeback mechanics. One spawns a golden Dino that once killed will tally up a score of all the Dino’s you kill in the minute after. That score determines how many levels of difficulty will get added to the enemy team. All enemy Dino’s increase in number, damage, and health. Plus the dominator. You can stack both together and time the invasion to create un winnable scenarios for the enemy team. By the time they get their own dominator the match is over and it won’t matter.
I sadly downloaded it on Saturday which gave me only a few hours of playtime, but man - I had so much fun! As a die hard fan / slave of Overwatch I loved playing as Echo / Zarya / Moira support. The dinosaurs are so weird, but actually funny. As Skillup said, this game doesn't take itself too seriously and it's for good. PvP was a bit clunky but in retrospective I can tell why we lost a game (eg. 3 DPS + 1 support against two tanks, 1 supp, 1 DPS). Also Skillup forgot to mention that every exosuit can equip a different rig (more defense like personal shield, more offense like a massive laser, etc.) which makes each exosuit setup a bit unique, because the same tanks don't have to play the same way. I personally had a lot of fun and cannot wait for July to play this.
As someone who got to play the recent beta, this game greatly excites me! In their survey, they asked players if they'd like to see 10 player pve or 5 player extreme pve, which leads me to believe that there will be modes without pvp. I'm definitely buying the highest edition that I can, cant wait for the full release :)
I enjoyed it and will definitely spend time with the full release but I can't see it having legs. The battle pass stuff is pretty much doomed from the start I feel.
for me, it's how the mod/chip system turns out, I need to have a beta with the Armory available!!
I've been burnt out on pvp games from approximately 7 years now and often avoid it like the plague. But I genuinely loved every moment that I played of both betas. I'd even argue that I wouldn't be as invested without the pvp.
The problem is probably gonna be map design not actual pvp
after this Video I am excited for this more than before.
So kinda related to the game, but I just wanna mention how versatile the RE Engine seems to be. The sheer difference in games that release using that engine is crazy. The incredible high-fidelity and in-depth physics of the RE remakes with loads of cool systems, to the stylised and fast gameplay of MH Rise and then the really cool swarm mechanics and, well... everything Exoprimal seems to have going for it. It feels as if CAPCOM made an engine that all of their development teams have thousands and thousands of hours of experience with already. It's definitely another highlight of their incredible output of games these past years.
Part of me does hope we see some PvE modes in the full game since I feel like I enjoy the game up until it turns into a “PvP” and realize that half my team bailed because they get taken out fast. I get Dino Survival is the main focus, but I hope there will be a lot more to the game than that, or my time with Exoprimal is going to be short.
My friends and I gave it a go, half of us were put off by it being PvP but I think the open beta put some of that aversion to rest. The PvP was fun and when we lost we kept trying new things until we won. We still hope there will be a dedicated PvE mode though. The post-beta survey DID suggest there will be more 10 player coop PvE stuff though.

tbh the dinosaurs being tossed around look silly as hell, and that alone makes it pretty compelling
Great gameplay, what I didn't like is that while the PvP is quality it's quite inconsistent how much there will be in the mode that is on offer in the beta, it depends on what the final mission is. And when players are experienced I am sure every team will be completing the first part of the mission in the same amount of time. With the gameplay there I think they should make some kind of MOBA mode that isn't equipment focused.
yea a moba mode would be a welcome one, with the PvEvP its compatible, similar to battleborn.
I was absolutely ready to dig my teeth into exoprimal but PvP is just an absolute deal breaker for me.
My overall state of mind got so much better since I stopped playing PvP games, it feels unreal.

The strange game is incredible as it seems... strange.
Despite its strange nature, i believe that it could potentially attract a specific audience here in my country, Brazil, especially considering the success of Dino Crisis in the past.
A plants vs zombies garden warfare garden ops style mode would be a lot of fun in this game. Having random rounds like a “triceratops only” and boss fights every 5 rounds with an extraction at the end
Wishing the best for this unique game, I had much more fun in the betas than I thought I would… I’m usually PVP averse but this feels less like a counterstrike and more like a MOBA. Wave control taking a big focus makes the game a lot more fun.
I like the sounds of the PvE segments of this game, the PvP puts me off, that said the idea of racing to the finish and then joining forces on a final boss would be a really cool gameplay loop, so both teams win but the better performer gets a slightly better reward

the finale of the payload was reminiscent of Lost Planet 2 campaign, when all factions get to meet a certain goal of saving the planet, but in exoprimal its an unbalanced pvp.
I am so glad someone is loudly announcing how much we need a new Dino Crisis. Thank you SkillUp for staying strong in the message. We have already had so much zombies in the horror genre, I deeply wish to be terrified of dinosaurs instead. Playing this game there's no terror at all, but I hope this game is just a warm up for them for the real deal soon.

I actually really like this game even the PVP aspect. The only thing I'd say for the PVP is they kind of need to make a choice with what they want players to focus on, the final objective is flooded with dinos as well as players and it can be a bit of a mess to complete the objective set out for you. Suit comp and team play could curb that mess more but you can't always have a full team to organise that.

Man this game looks chaotic, hilarious and fun. The ui is nice too. I can see it being a simple fun game to be played in a less sweaty way for laughs.
The fact that raptor swarms have literal hundreds of raptors on screen at once is fucking incredible
And it runs really smooth too from what I played in the Open Beta
Actually, I'd love to see a remake of 0,1, Code Veronica, and 5. Better graphics, modern controls, better writing, and all that will make wonders to even 5. Nothing, however, can save 6.

@@fakedemocracy It may difficult to understand for you, but to some people, the remakes serve as an introduction to the RE franchise, and they promote it. Making a good remake is a better thing than making a mediocre new IP. I'd rather have the entire RE franchise remade rather than play Exoprimal.
They totally shot themselves in the foot by adding PvP. Nighmarish balancing for them, and a hard pass from me.
I'm kinda looking forward to it, it look ridiculously fun in a zombie wave style game at first but is set on a team v team basis with a pve rush mode that leads up to an area with PvP possible as you rush to finish before the other team.
The game is a ton of fun I'm super excited. They keep talking other game modes for just pve and just pvp which is nice too. Each of the characters feel good and I genuinely enjoyed the game mode that starts with pve and ends in pvp. Iknow from other Betas that sometimes the round ends with both teams being combined to fight a super boss so I'm excited for more of that. I expect the launch to be super niche and if the game ever gets a large following it'll be from it pulling people in over time. Roadblock is my spirit animal.

Leave aside the actual final confrontation, I was trying to be as good as possible on the PvE specifically because I knew I was racing against others
I didn’t need to play well to kill the hordes, most games with hordes don’t need you to play well, which means that the game can get old fast
Here I was trying to be optimal specifically because I knew of the race against the enemy team, managing my cooldowns and maximizing my effectiveness

Problem, if the match was just that most people would disconnect as soon the other team gets a lead in the PvE portion, because most gamers are sore loser and unsportsmanlike

I really hoped for a Resistance 2 PVE Revival - definetly getting these vibes here, except for the pvp stuff...
If this were a more polished Earth Defense Force with dinosaurs, I'd be all over this, at the latest during a Steam sale. But if it hinges on being a PvP game, the servers will probably be empty by that point anyway, even though all I wanted was to blast a few dinos with some buddies.
If this ends up with a co-op campaign EDF style I will buy it haha.

This reminds me of Ghost Recon: Future Soldier's multiplayer, where both teams competed to complete objectives across the map. Best adversarial multiplayer I've ever played, and it saddens me that most people will never know how amazing it was. I hope we see more games like that. Only thing is, in today's gaming climate, most players will quit the instant they start losing.

@Man Bat I swear, these people in the comment section are so pathetic.
The whole thing with the dominator is very similar to an idea I had to help balance gambit. Rather than invading with your standard kit, you would have some sort of relic weapon like the Synaptic spear from Psi-Op Battlegrounds. It would give you a bump in health, some mobility, and potent attacks. Think of it like a diet super.
This would be way easier to balance than heavy ammo economy and Xenophage.

The seemingly random addition of PvP kills this game for me.
I don't usually like PvP team type games nor do I really like multiplayer focused games (despite playing a lot of FF14) with battle pass style stuff, but I played the beta yesterday with a few friends and I can scarecly recall having such a fun time with any game in recent memory. Could be the company I was keeping but not sure how possible that would have been without this game offering us some amazing moments.
