The Miracle on ice is known for being the single greatest American sports moments of all time. The "Miracle on Ice" was a medal-round game during the men's ice hockey tournament at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, played between the hosting United States and the four-time defending gold medalists, the Soviet Union.

We, Latvians have our own very emotional Miracle game against Russia. In 2000 World Championship that was hosted by Russians in Saint Petersburg, we beat them 3-2. Russian team was stacked with NHL superstars, but Latvia had a few NHL players and a few who had played in NHL before. Imagine how every Latvian felt after this game... 10 years after regaining our independence we beat the ideology that occupied our land and way of life, stagnated our economy and made us feel like aliens in our own home for 50+ years. That was something unbelievable, I remember that like yesterday and I was only 9 years old then. Our goalie Arturs "Like a Wall" Irbe cried after the game and said that he waited 30 years for this moment. Funny thing is that he HAD to play for Soviet team early in his career against his will, and won a few gold medals that meant nothing to him. Maybe you could react to Arturs Irbe, he had an OK NHL career, he wasn't the most skilled and was very small for a goalie but was hard working and very entertaining, aggressive as well.

LOVE Irbe!!! He played for my team, the San Jose Sharks. He was the first goalie I ever knew.

"Have the hockey nets gotten smaller over the years?" No, but you're not wrong in noticing. The goalies have gotten bigger. Both in body size and in the size of padding they wear. It used to be that you'd want these nimble guys in goal, but now with all the benefits of modern training, you can have huge guys who are just as nimble. And the approved padding sizes have increased as, you know, the governing body finally came to the consensus that getting your bones shattered by a slapshot is generally a bad thing.
also i think the angle that most nhl broadcasts have makes the goalmouth look thinner, along with the rest of the rink
Also goalie equipment was starting to get larger and larger and it started to become a advantage, that gear was so large it was now blocking up more of the net then protecting the goalie, so the NHL in recent years has cracked down on the size of goaltending equipment, this is still an on going thing in the NHL. The equipment the goalie has is there for safety not a unfair advantage of blocking up more of the net so I agree with the NHL decision to crackdown on size of goalie equipment.
I do think that the back of the nets have gotten smaller in dimension with a narrower profile and more room to skate behind them, and if you want to know why they got rid of the plastic circles on the ice inside the net search for "Mark Howe Injury". It's the hardest injury video to watch imo.
I think the net now is just more streamlined with less hard edges and that throws perception off. It could be a bit more shallow now though... it does seem large.
to add onto the nets getting smaller and the part in the back is different because back then it was a sharp metal pole that stuck out and a player once slid into it and cut his leg open. and the goalies have gotten bigger in size and the gear has gotten much bigger.
This was an amazing victory for the US. This also inspired one of my top 10 favorite films: "Miracle." It's a Disney film...

"Inspired" lol it was basically a jazzed up documentary w good acting! You are correct, but "inspired" doesn't seem to fo it justice. I'm struggling to find a better word to describe it, though. I dont know if English yet has one! Maybe it "predicated" the movie... would do it more justice?

Jim Craig deserves most of the credit for the win. The Soviets outplayed the the USA according to every metric except for the one that counted: goals scored. And the reason the Soviets didn’t score more goals was that Craig put on an amazing performance.

This was my intro to hockey & to this day I still get goosebumps hearing Al Michaels shout "DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES???" I loved this game. I was 5 watching this live. Had no idea what was going on yet at the same time, the social climate waa palpable & even at 5, I remember feeling it.

The Russian goalie was one of the best ever in the entire world and we benched him after the first. It's like killing Caesar.
Tretiek was one of the best goal tenders of the time.
He played in the 72 summit series vs Canada the man was a beast in the net.
And is also the first player born and trained outside North America to get into the hockey Hall of fame.
His stats list his playing years from '68 to '84..
He was drafted by Montreal in '83 but did not play.......the first Russian to play in the NHL was Alander Mogilny who defected and was drafted in '88.... '89 being the year that players where officially allowed to come over .
The backup was really good to though. I read something on how the backup either shit down the NHL all stars earlier that year. Or something, Soviets beat up on the NHL just a year earlier.

Everyone loves a great underdog story, this was one of the best! Always gives me chills, U.S.A. lol!
I was an 11 year old hockey player in Michigan crowded around a small TV with my family in our basement watching this game just over 40 years ago. Today, I have a photo of the players in a pile celebrating just after the game ended, autographed by Mark Johnson, displayed over my bar. This game rose above a mere sporting event and thrust hockey in the US to the mainstream.
Thank you for doing this video, Adam. I really enjoyed the way you started out with your lighthearted snark but were more and more in silent awe as the game progresses. Keep up the great work!

I participate in the Miracle On Ice Fantasy Camp; featuring the players from the 1980 team. I’ve met most of the team and coaches. They’re a humble group of men and are proud of what they accomplished. They’re incredible.
I'm old.. i remember this game at 13 yrs old.. I was so into Hockey at the time because I was a huge Philadelphia Flyers fan back in the day.. my Daddy raised me on the Broad Street Bullies when I was in the single digits.. I still remember that feeling when we beat the Soviets that day.. I cried, my parents cried.. with joy. I just watched the movie yesterday, again, Miracle on Ice.. hadn't seen it in probably 15 yrs or more.. cried again.. So much emotion when these college kids made it happen. I also remember getting up early in the morning to watch the Gold medal game. All by myself.. parents still sleeping, but I wanted to see it happen live.
I remember watching this game. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time and I don't even like hockey. But this was such a huge important game for us here in the US. There's really no describing it. Nobody really remembers the gold medal game. But everybody remembers this game.
A crazy story you’d enjoy is about ken Dryden he came into the playoffs for the canadiens as a goalie and won the cup before he had even lost a regular season game.
Dryden has one of the most incredible stories I've ever heard for a pro hockey player. My personal favorite is how he got his degrees while playing and then took a year off to finish getting his law degree..then came back! And won several more trophies, Cups, etc.

I was in 5th grade when I watched this game on TV with my parents. I've been a hockey fan ever since.
I love this every. single. time. I see it. I was 13 when this was happened and I was screaming with everyone in the stands. Probably the #1 sports moment in US history.

The secret to the American team was sheer athleticism. Coach Brooks picked the absolute healthiest players he possibly could. And then he pushed them to become even stronger and and more durable over a truly nightmare training season. During each game he would switch up the lines far more often than other teams, keeping everyone fresh. No one could keep up with them.
And then Brooks introduced what is now the style of hockey played by all professional teams throughout the world. It was fast, focused, and brutal. It flirted with rule breaking as his players overwhelmed opponents and delivered non-stop punishment as they used their legs and their stamina to dominate the area around them. Those opponents then responded with blatant rule-breaking, and many penalties were dished out during the latter parts of the games.
It was glorious. :)

I've watched Miracle on Ice documentaries so many times, I've watched the movie over 10 times, I did a National History Day project on this topic, and I've read books on this and I still get the chills every single time I watch a documentary like this. Great video :)
I always tear up watching miracle and highlights of this game because I played in 2 tournaments in lake placid 6 and 4 years ago and we played on the same ice they did in the 1980 olympics and we won both times. Pretty unreal now when I think about it and that I used the same dressing rooms as they did.
There is a great watch on UA-cam. Its called "The summit series " its a 7 game series played in the mid 70s between Canada and Russia. Its shows how truly awesome the Soviets are and the brutal tactics Canada gose to in the series.
It was 8 Games and we can discuss about Soviet tactics if you prefer. Even tactics off the ice.
It blows my mind that these two teams had played each other a few days or weeks before the Olympics for an exhibition game. They played in Madison Square Guardian and the Soviets won 10 to 3. How they were able to get themselves mentally prepared to face that team again and not only that be mentally ready to play anyone after that beating is beyond me. It could have just as easy for the team to quit on themselves, thinking there was no way they could beat the Soviets so why bother, but they were able to refocus and go on to win gold. You have to credit the coaches and players for their mental toughness above everything else. And the crowd helped fire them up I'm sure.

I've watched dozens of videos on this game-goosebumps every time.
I was a 10 year old hockey player at the time living on Long Island NY (about 5 1/2 hours away from Lake Placid NY) at the time. I remember it like it was yesterday. I get goose bumps every time I watch it.

I was our high school gym watching a basketball game when this game was on. I remember them pausing the basketball game so that everybody could listen to the last few minutes of this game. It was incredible!
1998 Nagano find that. It was the tournament of the century. NHL was stopped because of that tournament. And we Czechs who were outsiders in that tournament won. I mean outsiders when you count these countries USA, Canada, Russia, Sweden, Finland. We had best player in the world Jagr in that time and best goalie in the world Hasek and then we added players from our league Extraliga and still were able to win everything.

Jagrs number 68 was there because of the Soviets who invaded us in 1968 and this tournament made us believe in our country. This tournament was revenge for 1968 to Russians. This win made us proud being Czechs. Many players from that tournament risked life to play in NHL, because we were communist country.

This STILL gives me chills!! I was 17, watching on TV with my Dad, my hero. He had a razor sharp wit, but was very reserved, showed little emotion. It was the 1st time I ever saw him tear up! I've been an avid hockey fan ever since!

I was working in Montreal at the time, about three hours away from Lake Placid,NY where they played. My Canadian fellow-workers had been telling me what a good team the U.S. had. I watched the game live and went nuts! They'd delayed the broadcast for America so I got to watch it over again while it was played for our country there. Fantastic !!!
Dude, watch the Flyers-Red Army game in Philadelphia. The soviets left the ice cause they were getting beat up, smashed, bloody and just mangled! They were scared to play but had to go back on the ice and get beat down to the end. AWESOME game(i'm a flyers fan LOL)

Hey, huge hockey fan here. In total, the U.S. was outshot 39 to 16 in this game and the U.S. players who scored the 1st and 4th goals never played a single game in the NHL. Since the final round consisted of a group stage of the USA, the USSR, Finland, and Sweden, and this wasn't the USA's last game in the group, they needed to beat Finland two days later to win the gold. It had to be a win. A draw with Finland would have put them equal on points with the USSR and they would have lost to them on goal difference. They trailed Finland 2-1 entering the 3rd and final period, but scored 3 straight goals to win the game 4-2.
The 1996 World Cup of Hockey games between Canada and the U.S.A. are also really intense games to watch.

They actually almost lost the gold medal game. Right before the last period herb brooks walked into the locker room (they were losing by 1 I believe) and said “if you lose this game you will take it to your f-ing grave” walked away and turned back and shouted “your f-ing grave!”
It was not a gold medal game. It was last day of round robin medal round between four top teams.

Goals in the first and last minutes of a period are tremendous for momentum and keeping your team in it. Its such a clutch play to score with 1 second left when everyone else on the ice gave up and figured you wouldn't score.
Here’s another fun fact about those Olympics. The US trailed in score in EVER SINGLE GAME those Olympics. INCLUDING their last game against Finland. In fact, the way the tournament worked, if the US didn’t beat Finland, they wouldn’t have won the Gold Medal, the USSR still would have.
The tournament worked like this: There were 2 groups in the preliminary rounds. Group A and Group B. 6 teams in each group. Everyone played each team in their group once and were ranked afterwards in points. 2 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, 0 for a loss. So at the end of the preliminary round the top 2 teams from each division moved on to the medal round so the top 2 in each were as follows. Group A: Sweden (4-0-1 9 points) USA (4-0-1 9 points(they tied Sweden but were given the second position even with the same record due to the tiebreaker which I’m not sure what it ended up being maybe goals for)). Group B: USSR (5-0-0 10 points) Finland (3-2-0 6 points) Finland beat out Canada (also 3-2-0 6 points) due to having beat them in their head to head game. So for the Medal round you had Sweden and US, 1 and 2 from group A, and USSR and Finland 1 and 2 from group B. The medal round was not a single elimination style like typically you would have now. They now had each team play both teams from the opposite group once, and instead of having a third game for the teams to play the other team that advanced from their group they just started the medal round off using the outcomes of the game they played against each other during the preliminary round. So the US and Sweden had tied in the prelims so they started the medal round with 1 point each, and the USSR had obviously beat Finland so they started with 2 points and Finland with 0.
So to start the medal round, the beginning rankings were as follows: USSR (2 points) Sweden (1 point) USA (1 point) Finland (0 points). So then they had it so that the first of 2 games the #1 team from each group played the # 2 team from the other group. So the first 2 matchups was Sweden (#1 in group A) vs Finland (#2 in group B) and USSR (#1 in group B) vs USA (#2 in group A). Then the next matchups would just swap so the #1’s would play each other and the #2’s would play each other. Then the gold medal would go to whichever team out of the 4 finished with the most points out of those 2 games plus the carryover points from the game against their other group team from the preliminary round. So in game 1 the US beat USSR and Sweden and Finland tied. So after the first matchup the updated standings was USA (3 points) USSR (2 points) Sweden (2 points) Finland (1 point). Meaning for the last 2 matchups, if the US wanted to win the gold Medal they could only guarantee it with a win over Finland as if they tied, they’d have 4 points and if the USSR won they’d also have 4 but would have come out on top (most likely) due to goal differential which was the tiebreaker. And if Sweden had won it would have been the same situation, it wouldn’t have been a lock because they would have tied in points and depending how badly Sweden beat the USSR, they could have come out on top in goal differential giving them the Gold Medal. And a loss to Finland also would have cost them. As if the USSR and Sweden have tied, then all 4 teams would be tied with 3 points but the USSR would have won gold by goal differential and I’m not sure about who would have silver or bronze between Sweden and the US and Finland but whoever had the higher goal differential would have gotten silver. If we just leave everything that DID happen but change what could have changed depending on that US vs Finland game, if the US won that game they would have won gold (which obviously they did), had they tied, they would have won silver being tied in points with the USSR but well behind in goal differential. And had they lost to Finland by 2 or more goals, the US would have gotten bronze because they would have been tied with Finland for 3 points but Finland’s goal differential would have beaten them out for silver.
Also what’s interesting to think about is that the finals standings was US (2-0-1 5 points) USSR (2-1-0 4 points) Sweden (0-1-2 2 points) Finland (0-2-1 1 point) so remember they included the preliminary game against the team in your group in these standings. So the 1 point ahead of the USSR that the US was, was due to the fact that they were able to tie it up against Sweden in their very first game of the preliminary round and end up with a tie. Had they lost that game, they still would have made it to the medal round as they would have had 8 points and the team in third in that group was Czechoslovakia with 6, so that means you could say everything stayed the same in the medal round results wise, but that Sweden vs US game from prelims still would have counted, meaning they would have had 1 less point in the final point tally giving them 4 points which would have given the USSR the gold medal even with the US going 2-0 in actual games in the medal round, and the USSR going 1-1. Also had that been the case and say that last game against Finland the US tied, they would have been tied in second with Sweden with 3 points, and it would have come down to their goal differential which taking a tie with Finland into account would have made their goal differential +1, however we’d also have to take into account by how many goals the US would have lost to Sweden by in the preliminary game in this scenario. Sweden’s final GD was -7, so it’s pretty safe to assume that the US still would have grabbed Silver, however if they had lost to Sweden in that preliminary game by 4 goals, they would have been even on tiebreaker with -3 each, so I’m not sure what the next tie breaker was, but if they lost to Sweden by 5 or more, Sweden would have gotten silver over the US. Again, even with Sweden going 0-1-1 in the medal round and the US theoretically going 1-0-1 in the medal round. And if the US lost to Sweden in the preliminary game and also lost that last game to Finland, that would put the US at just 2 points, and Finland at 3, Sweden at 3 and USSR at 4 so the US would have no medal at all if they didn’t come from behind and tie Sweden and also come from behind and at least tie Finland let alone beat them.
The whole thing is pretty wild how all of those situations EASILY could have happened since like I said in all 7 of their games in those olympics they had been down in score and came back to tie or win all 7 of them.
Interestingly though, if Finland had beaten Sweden in the medal round and not tied, and also Sweden had beaten the US 2-0 in the preliminary round. That would have brought the medal standings to USSR 4, US 4, Finland 2, Sweden 2. Meaning if the US lost that prelim game to Sweden 2-0, Finland beat Sweden by just 1 goal in the medal round, and Finland held out and beat the US in the medal round, the standings would have been USSR 4, Finland 4, US 2, Sweden 2. And then depending on how much Finland beat the US by, it would change whether Finland won Silver or Gold, and whether the US won bronze or didn’t medal. If Finland beat the US by at least 6 goals, then Sweden would have gotten bronze and the US no medal, if they won by 5 I’m not sure because then both US and Sweden’s goal differentials would have been the same and I’m not sure what the next tiebreaker was. But if Finland had somehow beat the US by 9 goals, then obviously the same thing for US and Sweden, but Finland would have been tied with the USSR in goal differential so again i don’t know what happens there but if Finland had won by 10 or more, they would definitely have actually won the gold medal over the USSR. So yes, unlikely those events would have all happened, but for the US to have lost out on the gold medal it’s much simpler for that to have happened, and all it would have taken was a tie instead of a win against Finland, or a loss instead of a tie against Sweden in the preliminary game. Which to what extent they lost by could have even put them as far back as bronze had they also only tied Finland in the medal round depending how much they lost to Sweden by in the preliminary round.
Now it’s so much better and makes much more sense with just having a single elimination typical tournament bracket style to determine the winner and actually having a gold medal game where whoever wins that game wins gold and loser gets silver.
The old Olympic style for that always used to confuse me because when I was young I loved the movie Miracle (and still do it’s actually still my all time favorite movie) and I always got so confused when I was younger when they showed it was USSR vs USA and Sweden vs Finland in the finals, the US won, then they played Finland in the finals and then at the end they show USSR getting silver and Sweden getting bronze which to me made no sense at the time because I figured USSR lost in semis so they would then play loser of the Sweden Finland game for the consolation game for bronze and since the US played Finland next, I always assumed Finland beat Sweden and so since the US then beat Finland that it meant that US got gold, Finland silver, and whoever won out of USSR and Sweden got bronze so obviously USSR. But then they show USSR getting silver and Sweden with bronze and Finland didn’t even medal and it confused the hell out of me I always thought it was a movie mistake they made or something until I learned about how they ran the tournament and determined the medalists back then
Although I do have to say that the was they did it back then also does have some logical sense it as well. You take the top 2 from both groups (makes sense you’d do that today for a medal round, take top 2 from both groups and then set up a semi final and final but have a winner determined from each group first so US plays Sweden and winner plays winner of USSR vs Finland in the final and losers play in bronze medal game) but then instead of getting group winners to play for the gold medal they reset it and have another round play where you play everyone again and make it round robin. Ok, that’s also valid to do. After all the better teams should still be the better teams at the end right? Then maybe have the top 2 after that play for the gold and silver? But no then they just have the final points determine the medals, which ok, that’s still kind of fair. You just end up having 2 round robin rounds, a preliminary, then a top 4. But then they added instead of having the teams from the same group play each other again in that medal round round robin, they just added in the results from their matchup in the preliminary round. And THAT’S where to me it becomes a little weird to use as a medal determining round. All the rest of it, while different than normal and not what it is today and still not quite as fair to do as the single elimination bracket style everyone used today in my opinion, still makes sense and seems fair enough. But to me, once you’ve created a new round and separated away from the preliminary round, it should be a totally new round, not using the results from the preliminary matchup. Because yes while they did play each other before and the “better team won(or they were even and tied)” you can run into issues like I previously explained. Just for an example, maybe group A was the better group. Maybe the top 2 teams from that group were better than the top 2 from the other group, but maybe not by MUCH. Say just enough to where they SHOULD beat the other teams, but could still easily tie or lose. So now say the #1 team from group A beats both top 2 teams from group B but are very similarly skilled to the #2 team in group A and say they lost by 1 goal previously. Now they’re (2-1) 4 points. And say the #2 team in group A while better than the #1 team from group B, is not by much and loses to that team but beats the #2 group B team. Now due to their win against #1 in group A in prelims. They’re also (2-1) 4 points. Now the #1 team from group B has a win against #2 from group A and a loss to #1 in group A plus they just happened to have a better game early on against the #2 team from their group that’s now counted. They’re also now (2-1) 4 points. Now you go to tiebreaker which is goal differential. Say A1 lost prelim game by 1, won both medal round games by 1. That’s a +1 goal differential for being the best team but having the hardest team to play against out of the other 3 in their prelim group. Say A2 won prelim game by 1, lost 1 medal game by 2 and won 1 medal game by 1. They’re now Even in goal differential. B1 say won one medal game by 2, lost one by 1, but then say beat B2 in prelim by like 4 goals. Now they’re +5 and win the tiebreaker taking the gold medal over A1 even though they lost to A1, barely beat A2, and beat B2 in prelims by more because it was prelims and was a worse team to play against to pad their stars going into the medal round.
Now if you just simply reset that medal round and don’t include the previous result and have A1 play A2 again, and B1 play B2 again, based on what I said before about the better teams, let’s say that all stands true in these rematches against their own teams. So now say A1 now has a lot more momentum going and now that it isn’t the first game of the tournament they aren’t rusty or nervous, and they win by 4. Now they’re (3-0) +6 IN THE MEDAL ROUND. B1 beats B2 again but not by quite as much, say maybe 2 goals. Now they’re (2-1) +3, A2 is now (1-2) -4. Now that’s fair because everyone has now played everyone in the final round, knowing it’s the finals and they all have to play like it’s their last game in order to win and also to try and increase their goal differential as much as possible just in case. Whereas during the prelims teams could hold back a bit on other teams if they know they’re gonna win the game and it could come back to hurt them in the medal round by goal differential if that game ends up being included because they weren’t trying to continually score and tire themselves out in prelims.

I don’t know if it was mentioned in the video, but another interesting fact is that less than a week before the Olympics started, both team played a friendly together. That night, the soviets won 10-3. This shows why that win meant so much for those young amateur players. It was also a time when only amateur could take part in the Olympics. Si to go around that, the soviets would hire their athletes in the army, and pay them as soldiers. However, I don’t know for a fact that they never went to war, but it was only a cover for the soviets to be the best in Olympic without breaking the rules.
I live in Lake Placid, and practice on the Olympic rink almost every day for my school's team. It's pretty nifty, and still a huge part of our culture!

The year prior in 1979 that Russian team played the NHL all-star team (which fielded an astounding 20 future NHL hall of famers) in a 3-game series called the Challenge Cup. While the NHL all-stars won the first game, Russia came back to win the 2nd game and absolutely routed the NHL team in Game 3 to the tune of 6-0.
As far as anyone in the world was concerned, these college kids had absolutely no chance whatsoever at beating the USSR.
I went to college 20 minutes from Lake Placid. I was able to go into that stadium and walk on the rink. It was just amazing. There is a movie called Miracle. Very entertaining
I'm not a crier, but I get goosebumps and cry every god damn time all the players run onto the ice. I wasn't born yet when it happened, but for some reason I feel like I was there in the crowd whenever I rewatch some of the highlights.
Adam, the man coaching Team USA, Herb Brooks, is arguably the greatest coach of all time. What he did to prepare his team mentally and physically to achieve their goal is without a doubt the greatest coaching job of all time.
Just a little fact that is often over looked, but is the prime reason Team USA beat the Soviets that day is that the Soviet Team beat Team USA three weeks earlier (10 to 3) in a pre Olympic "friendly" match in NY city. The USSR Team was doing a pre Olympic tour and beating the NHL All Stars and a few teams from the league a month before the Olympics. Herb Brooks made sure he scheduled a game against the Soviets in Madison Square Garden in NY City.
Herb Brooks scheduled game against the Soviets to get the "shock and awe" of playing them over before the Olympics. He knew the only way to beat the Soviets in the Olympics would be to gain the experience of a major ass kicking before the games counted. And, he knew the Soviets would bite at an opportunity to kick Team USA ass. The play worked like a fucking charm.
The man was so far ahead of any coaches in the Olympics, it wasn't even close. The man was a genius and pulled off a miracle because he knew exactly what needed to be done. It is hands down, from start to finish, the most amazing coaching job ever. Herb Brooks' coaching plan and strategy to win the gold should be taught as Coaching Science and Theory at the University Level.

I watched the Brighton Miracle in the world cup of Rugby without knowing the outcome before, and when Japan won, I was ecstatic, and all I could think about was this game you just reviewed.

I played on that rink about 15 years ago and i expected it to be this huge arena with thousands of seats but that wasn't the case it was quite small. Equivalent to a high school arena.
This made me shed a tear
I do remember my Mother saying, "I never cared a thing about sports or hockey, but I watched that gold medal game". That was the game against Finland, the only hockey game she ever watched.
That was not the gold medal game. There was no final or semifinals at all. Finland finished 4th. The tournament rules were different at that time.
"The top two teams from each group play the top two teams from the other group once. Points from previous games against their own group carry over, excluding teams who failed to make the medal round. First place team wins gold, second silver and third bronze."
USA and Sweden were the top two from one group, Soviets and Finland from another. So the two remaining games were against the to teams from the other group. Soviets started with 2 points with win over Finland, USA and Sweden with 1 point from a tie they played in group play. So when USA beat both Soviets and Finland (+ 1 point from the group game against Sweden), they finished 1st with 5 points, Soviets had 2 to begin with and they finished 2nd with 4 points after beating Sweden. Swedes had 1 point to begin with and got another with a tie with Finland. Finns had no points to start with and they finished 4th with the one point with tie with Sweden.
I always get goosebumps and a bit of a shaky chin when I hear that famous "miracle" call. This is kind of a special day for me because it happened on 22 February, 1980... exactly two years before my birthday. ❤️
There was a movie a while back that came out called Miracle about USA win in hockey at the 1980 Olympics. It is a good movie you should watch it. It stars Kurt Russell.
