Hello Suzanne! Man, I am so glad you are doing this series!!! The ‘math of knitting’ has got to be my favorite video of yours yet. I’ve been doing a lot of independent reading on fabric design to inform my own garment making process and I feel that your work enriches my whole experience. I’ve always appreciated your methodical approach, it helps me demystify designing that I’m not completely just spinning my wheels. Looking forward to designing this ITAGbottom up sweater with you.

So fun. I was afraid the math would scare people off. And on top of that, all my chicken scratch and writing all over the paper. But in reality, that is exactly how I do it. I can't wait to see your project! Very exciting indeed.

Thanks so much for this video, Suzanne! Like you said, it's a lot of calculating, but you explain it clearly and it's not hard to follow. I'm just grateful for the pause button - LOL! I have ordered yarn for my sweater, and I just hope I've ordered enough, since I can't start swatching until it arrives.

Thank you for this! I always seem to be wanting to colour outside the lines and this lets me know how to do that without a lot of frustration. Awesome.

I had to rewind over and over and then just STARE the computer down before I finally understood where the 792x6.8 came from. Math is such a foreign language for me. BUT...I finally got it!!! You are the best Suzanne :)
Where someone else can look and get it, I have to write a book so that it makes sense to me.

    Love your videos.
I bought a 2 of your sock patterns on Ravelry but also wanted the emerald sock and mosaic sock pattern. It doesn’t seem to be for sale on Ravelry.

I really like this video. It's so analytical, and using this method a knitter can get an exact answer to the question How much yarn do I need?
BUT, you're working from swatches made beforehand, and presumably you must use the same yarn when swatching that you're going to knit with, meaning that you already have the yarn. So.... When purchasing the yarn do I get one skein for my swatching, and then order the rest when I know the exact amount I will need? Or do I make an educated guess and order what I think I will need, and then try to return (ick) or purchase more?

If you have never knit a sweater for yourself before, get one skein, then order the rest. If you have knit several sweaters, you will start to get a general idea of how much yarn it takes and can order in advance. I usually order quite a bit more than I need so I can swatch without having to worry about how much yarn I am using. It is up to you.

As a beginner-intermediate knitter, I was hoping this video might give some information on yarn weights and how to read skein labels when planning a project, but this is way too advanced for me at this stage! Fascinating tho'! I would like information on how to pair certain types of yarns with typical garments and projects. Very basic. What does it mean when the label says "use 5 mm or size 8 knitting needles" and shows a 4" x 4" gauge picture18 sts x 23 rows ? What does that information tell me when my pattern may have different gauge directions? For instance, I just knit an infant cardigan and thought the yarn seemed a bit "chunky" for the project, and the fabric a bit "stiff". Label says 4 Medium. Was that a hint? Suzanne do you have any videos that address how to choose a yarn for your project: label reading, yarn fiber content, yarn "thickness", texture, and fabric characteristics? Obviously you don't want an expensive wool for a baby blanket, but some washable acrylics can "fuzz up" and look cheap. How do you choose when looking at shelf after shelf of pretty colors and textures? Nothing popped up in the search bar but maybe you talk about these questions in a previous video.

Sheila, as a beginner I would recommend the Craftyarn Council and look under standards and then standard yarn weight systems. This is an excellent number of topics to address in future videos. craftyarncouncil.com

Ok so, even though I already did nice large swatches about 8", I now should do another swatch JUST four inches? It seems that's what I have to do in order to weigh the fabric before I can start all this math. I'm crying already Suzanne, math is not my friend.

no need to make different swatches :) you can calculate the grams for your 8" swatch. you will measure both sides of your swatch and then multiply one number by the other, for example one side (horizontal) is 7.5" and the other side (vertical) is 8.0", then your number is 7.5 x 8.0 = 60 sq inches. Then you need to take out your kitchen scales and weigh your swatch - this will give you for example 7 grams. then, to identify the grams per square inch, you will simply divide: 7grams (weight of your swatch) / 60 square inches (area of your swatch) = 0.12 grams per square inch (rounded up to two decimal places). then you will use this number once you know the overall area of your sweater to be (in square inches), like Suzanne did ;)

Katarina's reply is perfect. I enjoy following your progress. Yes it is scary at the beginning, but when it starts coming together, it is so rewarding. I can't wait to see your sweater!
