- When people talk about slack key and altered tunings, they often mention that choosing one tuning locks a player into one key, limiting their range. This is probably true of most people, but then Ledward Kaapana is not most people.
In this clip his sister, Lei Aiken, is singing a couple of classic Hawaiian songs and her preferred key is F. Ledward is playing in taropatch G tuning, which is just the wrong tuning for playing the key of F, believe me. But no matter, he does his "pa`ani" or solos in G then modulates to F to color behind Lei's vocal. Jesse Gregorio, the bass player, can't stop grinning at the shift between keys!
This clip was recorded at Ledward's regular Sunday evening gig at The Kona Brewing Company restaurant in Hawai`i Kai. When he's on O`ahu on a Sunday he is almost always playing at Kona Brewing from 6 to 8 PM, for free.
The two shot of Led and Lei was done with a Lumix GH3, the back shot with Jesse was caught on a Lumix GM1, and the head shot of Ledward with a Lumix GX7. Audio recorded from the board to the Zoom H6. All editing in Edius.

You can find Led with three sisters on PBS Hawaii's "Na Mele" series - amazing stuff. And you're right, Led talks of all his influences growing up. His mom and dad played music for celebrations and events all across Hawaii Island, and never got paid, just sharing their talent.

This is one of my favorite clips. For one thing it reminds me of the good old days when Led played every week at the Kona Brewing restaurant in Hawai`i Kai. Then it's Led and his sister, which brings the sound of Kalapana backyard to us. And finally, it's got Led playing pa`ani (instrumental breaks) in G then switching to F sister Lei's vocal - but he's in G tuning, so what he's doing is impossible!!

Honestly tho, I've been playing guitar for about 7 years but some of the videos you put out there with led were the first videos I ever watched and I used em to learn how to play. +Scott Hunter One can never be certain, but I would expect that Ledward will still be playing at Honey's at Ko`olau, a golf course restaurant in Kane`ohe. It's a much more musically satisfying venue than the KBC shown in this video.
