Dear Malcolm, we would not see your heart, or George McDonald’s. if you did not share so openly with us each week. Thank you! What a privilege it is to visit your office, and have you take us on these precious excursions… illuminating these treasures for us… reading to us. McDonald’s letter is so beautiful! It lifts my heart, though it was written for someone else. It cultivates Hope to witness this beauty in a human soul; and love like God‘s love. 🌟🕯🌟
I am enjoying this wonderful video on my 62nd birthday just three weeks after surgery to remove a cancer. I am recovering well and this definitely helps!
As an archivist myself, to have someone as passionate as you visit the archive must feel really special to the people caring for and researching these documents!
Dear Malcolm, I'm almost crying here with you as you read the letter McDonald sent to Ruskin. Thank you - THANK YOU - from the bottom of my heart for continuing to be the literary wellspring from which so much inspiration flows.
What great providence. I woke up this morning praying for words to say at a funeral this afternoon. The final letter to Ruskin gave me the words I needed. Thank you Malcom and may God Bless!
Amazing! I love your energy, enthusiasm, passion, love, and everything else you put into words and reading. It is very contagious. I was one who didn't like reading. Your contagious has caused me to enjoy reading and studying immensely, and I am grateful for that. I often contemplate all the things I have missed over the years. Thank you, dear friend.
We're so used to connecting to the hearts and minds of these great authors through their disembodied words alone that it must truly be awe-inspiring to hold the very piece of paper that passed between their hands. It's a foretaste of when we will no longer be in different worlds. Glad you got to enjoy that opportunity during your Yale trip, Malcolm!
Wow! How thrilling for you all! Thank you for sharing not only your excitement, but also Samuel's special encouragement, Charles' cheeky sense of fun, and George's great-hearted compassion. Wonderful to have all of these men in our world making such treasure to share. 🙂 Much love to you both 💕 💙
So magical to be in his presence and live vicariously through his excitement and passion for these priceless pieces of history! If we all could live in his world of true deep meaning of this life…
As a Davidson man I will begrudgingly respect Yale haha. Coming through that door really stimulated some neurotransmitters, lecture always irked some but to me it was a place of serenity. Learning and striving alongside talented peers is truly a God sent experience.
Malcolm. You dont know me, and i have not the foggiest idea how I found your channel. Ive been subscribed for a little while now, and I am amazed by what you have going for you. You wouldnt pick me out of a crowd that looks like he belongs in the wonderful places you visit, to your very cozy library. I just wanted you to know how wonderful I find all of this. The pipe smoking. The reading. The visit to incredible places filled with life and history. I just wanted to thank you. Thank you for all this. You seem to live a life of joy and fufillment. I often come here when im down for a serene video experience. Its easy to get lost in, and half the time, i have no idea whats going on. I imagine I came here for something pipe smoking or Lord of the Rings related, but i stayed for who you are. Your a brilliant content creator thats one of the most genuine folk ive ever seen out there. May your days be blessed, and may you be blessed during the holidays with you and yours. - J
Dear Malcolm, I am a new subscriber here and I feel blessed to have come across your channel. My reading plans for 2025 now include more of Tolkien and Lewis (I have yet to finish any of it). I am grateful that you share the works that you do, in such a friendly and welcoming way. As a reader I leave your videos feeling inspired and better than when I started. Thank you for that. Merry Christmas!
You inspire me to pick up the pen again. To write poetry and tale's. Though I am older, watching you makes me wonder and dream as if I was a child again. May God continue to bless you Sir!😇
Please tell me the letter from Mark Twain still smelled of tobacco! Thank you for bringing us along and please convey to the Beinecke Library staff my gratitude of letting you share that with us. I can't tell you how many times I paused the video to read the handwritten page of the authors. Thank you again, this was quite a treat !
So fascinating and lovely! I got myself a used Folio Society edition of The Stones of Venice for Christmas and asked my husband to wrap it for me. Ha. Can't wait to read it! Truly curious what happened with Effie.
Hi Malcolm Can you do a video about where to start with George McDonald? I read The Princess and the Goblin but didn't like it. I'm interested in him because he was a person of faith as well as an influence on the fantasy genre,
I feel like Bastian Bux, the little boy from the movie, The NeverEnding Story, who stumbles into a secluded bookstore filled with titles from the ground to the roof, where the riches of the human imagination lay in waiting 📚
What's interesting, at one time both Lewis and Tolkien Loved George MacDonald, but at some point Tolkien fell out of love with him, did the tokens writing style evolving in a completely different direction. Lewis however held onto it. It's particularly on display in The Chronicles of Narnia. Many elements of Narnia are very much George MacDonald. I suspect this is why I told him never really got into it. It's not the only reason but it's one of the contributing reasons. Nevertheless I think he's still appreciated it because he's still recommended the Narnia books to his daughter. But George MacDonald is a really good writer. I have read The princess and the goblin. And one of these days I'm going to look up the golden key.
Hey Malcolm, if you get a chance to take in a show an american act is working it's way through the UK soon. Its a great way to celebrate the coming season. Behold the Lamb by Andrew Peterson. Edinburgh, Nottingham, London, Cardiff.
Just at the George MacDonald conference which finished today. Monday evening I’ll be in New York reading poetry as part of the Getty’s Irish Christmas concert at Carnegie hall
I'd love to hear you speak if you come back to Connecticut. I'll have to look for a schedule. I'm not on social media save for YT. I just bought 'The Princess and The Goblin' a couple of days ago not even knowing it was so close to the great mans birthday. At any rate, thanks for the reply!
I hope our younger generation can discover the same infectious enthusiasm that you possess. It saddens me to think we might be the last generation to experience it!
I love this man so much. Like he's sprung out of a JRR Tolkien novel. God bless you Malcolm.
My ideal lifestyle when I retire
@@callum7081 Mine too. I'm still a young man though, got a long way to go.
I'm convinced that Malcolm is actually the physical embodiment of Tom Bombadil
True story!😄

I don't know of any other youtuber that greets his audience like an old friend popping in for a chat.

Fabulous Malcolm.
Thank you Malcolm
Fantastic. Thank you Malcolm.
I love MacDonald's drawing of him reading Lewis Carrol's book to children, while on the floor in the corner is a book of his own children's stories.

Wish I knew you were in New Haven! Would love to share a pipe at the Owl Shop with you!
What did we misglean from it? Thought it was a genuine researched effort? Like the phone return address?

Behold the Lamb by Andrew Peterson.
Edinburgh, Nottingham, London, Cardiff.
I love behold the lamb and have seen it in the states. I wish I could catch the London show but I’m gigging that night in Belfast
Dr. Guite, have you ever read anything by Rider Haggard?
Not yet
You were right down the road from me. Are you speaking in CT?
Just at the George MacDonald conference which finished today. Monday evening I’ll be in New York reading poetry as part of the Getty’s Irish Christmas concert at Carnegie hall

hand written and stored for Generations to come, fabulous, time for a pipe and breakfast Dram
Did Hillary autograph it for you on the "Ellen Show"?
Is that a cigar in your coat pocket? I did not know that you are a cigar smoker.
I hope our younger generation can discover the same infectious enthusiasm that you possess. It saddens me to think we might be the last generation to experience it!
So they just let folks handle the without gloves?
You should tell the person in the back that that mask they are wearing will do them no good.
