    Done exactly as u did with the exception of the grind stone . A Christmas tree deburing tool does an excellent job with no real rough edges it also fits the tip of the Johnston a dow near perfectly just some of my tooling for revolvers. I do an 11 degree forcing cone being careful not to cut to deep have excellent 1 hole groups with my Remington love watching you're videos have a original mold that cast beautiful bullets. Good job keep up good work! R Filbert 7th Va.

    Hi, I just ran across your channel.
    You just reminded me of a time back in the seventies and eighties when I was buying Colt and Remington repros. I had a brass frame 1851 that I wore out.. the Remington has a stronger frame and I couldn’t harm it. Along that time, one of my neighbors sold me an original Colt 36cal mold. It made a .357 diameter bullet in one section and the same size ball in the other section. I didnt have any fine measuring tools at the time but I still have some bullets and balls from that mold. Unfortunately I sold the guns and mold long ago. Now that I watch you guys on UA-cam with all of the accoutrements you guys make, it upsets me because back them there wasn’t nearly as much info available.
    I have moved on tho making flintlocks and percussion firearms and now everything in the way of info is out there.
    I just want to thank you and others for presenting the info in a very concise and interesting way.

    Thank you! So far, I have yet to try conical bullets but, the idea is definitely there! I have a Pietta version of this fine weapon and I have also purchased a .45 Colt cylinder so that I can fire those loads!
    This seems like a very easy fix for when I decide to start loading conical bullets! Thanks, again for an excellent tutorial!

    You don't seal the chambers with additionnal grease ? Grease on the bullet is enough to avoid chain fire ? Thank you for this great vid, straigtht to the point.

    • @erasgonehistoricalmolds2400
      @erasgonehistoricalmolds2400  Рік тому +1

      Chain fires are really prevented by tight seals with the bullets and proper fitting caps. The grease is really to keep help keep down the fouling.

    Even the original seating plunger was not optimized for the conical bullets of the time. Strange considering that conical paper cartridges were supplied right from the Remington factory with every new gun, and to the Union Army ongoing. The Uberti plunger recesses into the frame, so no need for reliefs on the face to clear the bullet nose. Loading chamber is larger also. Pietta goofed on this.

  • @kevinmorris8727

    When shortening the plunger, do you risk not seating a ball completely causing a small air gap?

    • @erasgonehistoricalmolds2400
      @erasgonehistoricalmolds2400  Рік тому +1

      Unless you have a very tiny powder charge the bullet will be seated low enough. Plus, the dangers of an air gap in revolver cylinders is vastly over stated.

    How will round balls fare after the modification?

    • @erasgonehistoricalmolds2400
      @erasgonehistoricalmolds2400  3 роки тому +1

      Loading should be no different. However, the ball will be 1.5 mm less deep in the chamber after loading, since the plunger is that much shorter.

    • @Seahawksl1969
      @Seahawksl1969 3 роки тому

      @@erasgonehistoricalmolds2400 that was part of my concern. Would adding a larger charge suffice?

      @@Seahawksl1969 Certainly, or a fiber wad under the ball to take up space. 1.5mm is not much to worry about when it comes to powder capacity.

    That was a successful mod! You would have been much better to have sharpened the drill to the correct "cone" shape on your grinder, that way it would have formed a much better better indent in the plunger, you would also have much better control over your frame grinding if you hold the frame/barrel in the vice, and use both hands to control the Dremel tool, but you got there, and can now load conicals, what is not "original" about the Uberti repro ? Obviously they have the loading lever correctly positioned. Stay safe ! Chris B.

    • @erasgonehistoricalmolds2400
      @erasgonehistoricalmolds2400  3 роки тому

      As I mentioned in the video, Remingtons did not have a cone shaped cavity in the plunger as did the Colts. Originals were ball shaped, and not very deep.

    • @453421abcdefg12345
      @453421abcdefg12345 3 роки тому

      @@erasgonehistoricalmolds2400 Yes I realise the original rammer has a sperical shape recess, which must distort the conical bullet nose, but my point is that it would be much easier for you if you sharpen the drill to cut the cylindroconical recess in one drilling, it is much easier to sharpen/shape the end of the drill to cut the recess in one operation, and also less messy! I think you made a video on the differences between the Uberti and Pietta 1858 in the past, I will have to look that up, your sensible videos are always a joy to watch anyway. Stay safe !Chris B.

    Question, I can shoot .44cal paper cartridges in a uberti remmington. But I have a problem using the round in a pietta 1860 , binds up. Should I modify the 1860 in the same way? I use round ball in charges, and have moulds to make both .36 and .44.

    • @denisdegamon8224
      @denisdegamon8224 3 роки тому

      I don't see why that making the same modifications would not work on your 1860. Just try placing the conical or paper cartridge in the gun and see where it makes contact before making the modification.

    I have a question not pertaining to the video but it is about Blackpowder. I’m relatively new to Blackpowder but have been shooting regularly the last couple of months. I’ve been storing my Blackpowder tools and powder together in a metal ammo box but is in a temperature controled room. It’s dry where it’s at but the powder and caps and wads is store together in a metal ammo can. Is this dangerous? If so, what’s the best way to store my blackpowder and supplies?

    • @63DW89A
      @63DW89A 3 роки тому +2

      WVbyGraceofGod You have an excellent storage method. I'd suggest storing caps in a separate can from the powder though. I've always stored my percussion caps away from the powder, and my primers away from the smokeless powder as a matter of habit over the past 50 years or so!
