Here after herring that Leiji Matsumoto has recently pass away. Truly, rest in peace. I can't express enough how grateful I am for the works he's created.
Just how iconic GE999 is. one if his final works is to collab with TakaraTomy 's Shinkalion Z Project. not only Maetel joined the team (as a preteen little girl and this time human. which he made clear that Maetel in Shinkalion Z and ones in the main Leijiverse is different person and different races even. the only similiarity is that the two looks EXACTLY the same and even signature garments!!) but also Valdor (Final boss in Shinkalion the Movie) was captured and rebuilt with exactly the same interior as Galaxy Railways train. complete with exactly the same Leijimeters. You can't miss it. My speculation... LM (or his apprentices) did involved in Season1 developments when it comes to space train since he made it popular. especially with the introduction of Valdor as a Space Train (which functions very much the same as a ghost train operated by Machine Empire in Sayonara Galaxy Express 999). He probably joined The Movie crew, in Season 2 I don't think that Maetel and Valdor are only his contributions to Shinkalion Z, some other character designs maybe as well.
Back in 2011, I watched this show over 5.5 days and marathoned 60 episodes in one sitting. Rest In Power, Leiji Matsumoto. You are one of the all-time greats.
Rest in Peace Leiji Matsumoto... (January 25, 1938 - February 13, 2023) Galaxy Express 999 is how I discovered Leiji Matsumoto. I remember watching the anime film when I was around 10-11.
When I was on crunchyroll a couple years ago I scrolled through their list by popularity and scrolled all the way to the bottom. This anime was on the bottom and I decided to watch it and I have zero regrets. What an AMAZING anime and it deserves hunter x hunter treatment
if you haven't yet you should watch the galaxy railways its a spin off there are two seasons and a 4 part mini sears to tie both seasons together with special guests tetsuro meatel and the 999.
This hits deep now. A very legendary manga artist is gone. Galaxy Express 999 was one of the first manga series I read thoroughly in the 1990s, when it was printed in Animerica magazine. I also watched the anime when it played on the Sci-Fi Channel. My late grandmother used to make me breakfast and watch anime with me on the Sci-Fi Channel (my house didn’t get it) and we’d talk about what we watched. Some of my best memories of my sometimes very awkward adolescent years were thanks to Leiji Matsumoto. Thank you, and RIP you absolute legend! o7
About 30 years or so ago, a local Spanish television station (WNJU channel 47) aired Japanese programming every Sunday night... Galaxy Express 999 was part of the lineup. Memories!
They also did it on Saturday nights as well. They showed this as well as Cyborg 009, Space Pirate Captain Harlock, Brave Raideen and Ikkyu San. I used to watch these shows before I went out to party!
@@forexjammer no, the 3 upcomming movies for emeraldas, harlock and maetel are not going to be a remake of the original ge999 series its about the 3 main characters harlock maetel and emeraldas. but yes maetel will be in it
Yes, Leiji Matsumuto did the character designs and animation for Daft Punk's videos and later movie, Interstella 555. the Daft Punk guys are very big fans of Leiji Matsumoto's work, so they asked him to do the videos for them.
I had one of the best memories watching Galaxy Express 999 with my brother, and once a year I still return to appreciate this great story. Rest in peace Leiji Matsumoto!
I wasn't too fond of this show as a kid, since it's so damn sad. I think every episode is made in order to try and make you cry. As I became older I started to love it, though. But it still brings tears to my eyes.
Even as a kid I thought this animation conveys such deep messages and is very philosophical. Now as an adult, I'd like to watch the entire episodes again... must be able to find many other aspects of stories.

Love this series! I really like how they paid a lot of attention to detail when animating the locomotives. I also like their inclusion of different, famous Japanese locomotives and trains.
CHOOOOOOO natsukashii! I watched this show after school every week! It was definitely one of my favorites. I never thought I'd ever see this song clip ever again - what a tear jerker! *L*

I been sad today because Akira Toriyama pass away two days ago and I was saying that what make me sad is that he was yo young already because go nagai of devil man and Mazinger z and leiji Matsumoto still alive making stuff still being way more older than Akira, and I decided to remember this now I'm way more sad because thanks to the comments I descover leiji Matsumoto pass away a year ago, really underrated person in the manga industry legend from the 70s that I always think he deserves more, I'm glad thanks to daft punk he's animation became more international even people still not know who is the guy behind the animation of the music video of one more time
If you say Ozma animated is 'underrated'... then Shinkalion Z is even 'lost' to me or you. I only known very recently that Shinkalion Z (the season 2) features Maetel (a clone actually, LM and the animation crew wrote backstory that while the two Maetels are looks exactly the same, backstory are different in both settings. in Shinkalion Z she's a human Hokkaidoan who joined Shinkalion Team because she's a railfan who's excited with a new Shinkansen Line is extended to her hometown. the Original Maetel is an extraterrestrial people similiar to Starsha in SBY series (LM created Maetel as main character because he's disappointed with Starsha's roles in SBY when working under Nishizaki. very few appearances and never leaves her world. whle Maetel travels along with the 999 for several centuries (in Maetel Legend it is revealed that she left her homeworld with Emeraldas via the 999 Space Train).
Not just Captain Harlock, but also the Queen Emeraldas series. In the movie adaptation Emaraldas is actually Maetel's sister! Both of these series (and also Space Battleship Yamato in the manga) are all intertwined in what is known as the "Lejiverse"

I did the same in 2013

Galaxy Express 999 is how I discovered Leiji Matsumoto. I remember watching the anime film when I was around 10-11.

Yeah, this anime is a childhood favorite of my parents. Glad you liked it
I got excited but it's not on my region..
if you haven't yet you should watch the galaxy railways its a spin off there are two seasons and a 4 part mini sears to tie both seasons together with special guests tetsuro meatel and the 999.
And it also deserve a hornby model
The "Hunter x Hunter treatment" was a gesture of disrespect. Watch 1999 adaptation and tell me I'm wrong.

Japanese with English subtitles.

In my case was public television NJ also Captain Harlock space pirate
I used to watch it longer ago than that. I'd have to jiggle the UHF dial just right to get it tuned in
I've been a fan of this series for long as I can remember.
Rest in peace, Leiji Matsumoto.
RIP Leiji Matsunoto
May the Galaxy Express continue to fly to the stars
I hope that some day this show gets the Space Battleship Yamato 2199 treatment. This anime deserves to be redone with modern graphics.
It is getting one. Gainax recently announced it. 2026 release lol.
Well, time to wait lol
Wait what? Can I have a source on that?
Thanks lad.

Rest in Peace, Matsumoto-san.
My dad was in high school when this anime came out lol.
I started watching sometime last moth
This serie changed my life, incredible, fantastic, absolutely the top.
Same here!
Had a a casette of this anime in VHS when I was a kid, the opening theme is still very beautiful but at the same time very sad...
Quite so. Also, nostalgic as hell.
But considering the subject, Galaxy Express 999 wasn't ever quite a happy story from begin with.
RIP in the sea of stars Leiji Matsumoto
Rest in peace forever sensei
Rest in peace. Thank you for everything Leiji Matsumoto 💛
I'm crazy, I'm fool for this series I JUST LOVE IT with all my HEART.

awesome! The melody is in the modern has been lost. Melody of this era is the melody that transience and melancholy drifts.
The creator of this, Leiji Matsumoto recently died. REST IN PIECE!
This will definitely one of the most out there shows I've watched the entirety of, but I don't regret it and I enjoyed every second.
RIP Leiji
Leiji Matsumoto... my favorite Mangaka. There is always a philosophy and many lessons behind his pieces of arts
Came from Honkai Star Rail because it reminded me of this. I remember watching this with my mom as a child

This-outside of Sailor Moon, Tales of Magic and Gatchaman-was my first exposure to anime during my first trip to Japan (May '96).

I was born in Japan so it was very natural that I was brought up to be around manga and anime. I was seeing "GE999" on TV in '80s. I miss those days.

I feel like crying... those childhood days with Tetsuro
Never saw the movie, but so fascinating, that it's actually about trains! 😃
it's got trains but it's not about trains
I see.
The memory of those tracks forever imprinted in my mind...

Wow! I used to watch this as a kid in the 70's on TV here in the states! Great series! Thanks for putting it up!
Over 500k views for an obscure 1970's animated show that never even aired on american television? Oh fuck yeah.
Actually I think it did air on the east coast lol (like nyc).
Love this series! Hope they have a remake or continuation of the series.
I get chills everytime I hear this song.

Even tho GE999 is over 100chapters i really enjoyed it. It's a fantastic series w lots of emotions along the way. And personally i love the art too.
Just how phenomenon the 999 is. Shinkalion Z marked her returns (and LM's final Animation works) as a member of that team.
