I take a look at how Galveston lifted itself from the sea after the nation's deadliest natural disaster, the 1900 storm. The Galveston Grade Raising is one of the most monumental civil engineering projects in Texas, and many Galvestonians take it for granted every day.

All the amazing work these men did all those years ago…the skill, vision and determination to save their city. Awesome report.
It's just amazing how much they were able to do back then. This has become one of my favorite UA-cam channels. I have visited Galveston 6 times (I'm from MN) and still haven't seen all that I want to see. Thank you for taking us exploring even more of the island. Your videos are wonderful!
Thank you for your kind comment and for watching all the way from MN!!!
Your presentation of the Galveston 1900 Storm is the best I’ve ever heard and watched. You do a remarkable work in Galveston Unscripted. Thank you.
Great video! It's great how you were able to tie in some of your earlier videos into this one.
Yes! I am very happy to be able to pull from older videos to add more context and detail!
What an awesome video. Production on the channel keeps getting better. Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much!!
This answered a lot of questions for me. Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Did not know about the Borden Oak. As always, JR, thank you sooo much for your gifts to The Island!
Big fan of the channel.
Thanks for supporting!!!
Great video 👍 thanks
Thanks!!
Wow interesting history. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!!
We are happy that the sea level hasn't risen since the seawall was built. Just look at the old photos and compare to today.
Through research.
Great video.
Thank you.
Great video!
I am so glad that I found this site. I am BOI (5th generation) and always interested in the history of the island. I do have 20+ 3-ring binders of photos and letters and documents that I have "inherited" after grandparents and parents passed. Some documents are saved at the Rosenberg Library also. I have often told people about the grade raising- I just brought 2 cousins from France to Galveston to show them where that side of my family settled. They were impressed. I have often wondered how the city smelled after all of that dredging was dumped under the buildings. ;) And I do have questions about the island's history from things I have found in the family documents - what was Denver on the west end? What were "the Gardens" on the ocean side of Broadway- I think that's where they were located ? Thanks for the great information!
I’m glad you found the channel!!!
I’m sure the island smelled SO BAD!
Check this out for your Denver question!!

The one picture that I’ve seen over and over all my life was the raising of the Hotel Galvez
The Galvez was built in 1911, just after/during the grade raising. So, not quite raised, just built on top of the new grade!
New Orleans still can’t figure it out after 100 years lol
BTW, that Robert's fellow also engineered RULES OF ORDER, parliamentary law.

@@galvestonunscripted I got the connection when I read that cornerstone when I ate at Murdock's 20 years ago
There are tons of these neglected mansions around the US owned by celebrities. Taylor Swift has one in Nashville. P Diddy has one in Woodlands Tx. Sylvester Stallone owns one in Maryland. Check it out.
1900 Storm, Galveston rises.
After Harvey, TXDOT wants to put the freeways in downtown Houston UNDERGROUND!
ALSO, half a mile from along shoreline. We're better build NON CONTINUOUS SEA WAVE BREAKERS with LIFE SEA SHELLs, like oysters and clams, with zig zag placement to tame down beach erosion and clean the water
Good thought…could start a whole new industry there as well as protection.
❤❤❤
Like what I said, after watching Patrick i came here straight
Thanks man!! I appreciate you!
