This is B.B. at his absolute BEST, which is saying something. I haven't heard Greenie's version, but Mike Bloomfield's solo on this tune on East/West is gets my vote as the most masterful blues solo ever recorded! But I'm going to listen to PG now...
After the Bloomfield solo where Paul comes back in and sings the next verse Bloomfield plays three notes in response. Those notes are just dripping with feeling and soul that cannot be taught. It sounds like the guitar itself is in emotional pain. The way they are played cannot be duplicated by reading sheet music by even the most skillful guitar players.
The original version by BB King (this video) has the most soul, but Peter Green/Fleetwood Mac’s version has BY FAR the most masterful guitar work of all 3 of the versions of this song. Peter is CRIMINALLY underrated! Back in his day, he was called “better than Clapton” by MANY!
@@briantaylor2.023 I am not an accomplished guitarist, but I have an idea of what’s being done on the fretboard by these greats. BB is pure emotion, with a pretty limited range of musical vocabulary. It’s all micro tonality in the vibrato and the dynamics of his attacks. PG adds more minor scale ornamentation and has a greater command of the different positions. And fantastic tone and all around facility. But Bloomfield has constructed a long form musical edifice that combines the tone, vibrato, dynamics, and attack the others have with an overarching structure full of modal elements that is unique. To think that this was improvised in the studio is incredible to me. Ultimately it’s just my opinion but I hold it fiercely!

@@OwnYourBaldSpot It wasn't that one...Greenie was in the zone that night for sure. But when you combine Butter's singing and very importantly the piano part and band's overall contribution to the storytelling it elevates the PBBB version in my mind. Peter is more like Buddy Guy sometimes is...too soft. then too loud, not much in between. Just my opinion of course!

BB is always great but given the top three best version I have to say Peter Green captures the soul of the song the best, BB King, and the Butterfield/Bloomfield versions just don't sound miserable enough, Peter captures it so well that its almost too hard to bear. Bloomfield's version is great, just not right for the song, its a bit too busy, the tone isn't quite there, Butterfields vocals are somewhere in the middle and that arrangement just doesn'tk quite capture the right mood . BB's has better phrasing than Bloomfield for the song, he's the innovator there, but his vocals and his powerful voice just don't quite emote a man quite ready to die, and Peters guitar, well its just almost impossible to top and those vocals just make you want to cry. BB is definitely a more prolific writer of the blues, all three version are great but through Peter was probably the best guitarist, BB is a rock solid blues icon that was strong enough to make his great career last a lifetime and the other two were far too fragile, shooting stars burn bright but not for long.
