Thank you for giving The Thing prequel the respect it deserves. Seriously, the CGI is just fine imo and it's a lotta fun seeing how the thing reacts in ways to the original group who found it. I freaking love the scene where it's melding its body by pressing into one of the researchers, it's creative and unsettling like the original!

The Thing prequel had so much potential! Aside from the CG and the crew literally turning on each other, it had a lot of creative ideas! Also seeing Mary Elizabeth Winstead ( right after Scott Pilgrim vs The World) as Kate Lloyd, was a treat!

Fun Fact....There are actually 2 different versions of "Exorcist the Beginning" ...the second is" Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist" ... the studio and directors wasn't very happy with the first film so they allowed Paul Schrader to finish his version ...both are similar stories and quite good , but Dominion had a much better story line... interestingly the studios still show both versions of the same story ... super creepy movie, I love it.

The Thing prequel's flaw wasn't the movie plot, acting or directing, it was the fact they went over the awesome practical effects with trash CGI . They also changed a little of the ending to the detriment of the story, but that wasn't a deal breaker.

Nothing wrong with the plot other than it can't decide whether it's a prequel or a modernised carbon copy. They got the aftermath spot on, but apart from that they made little attempt to appeal to fans by doing anything unexpected (in a good way). Instead the Thing spears a bunch of people through the chest, kills a bunch off-screen, and acts like generic CGI acts.

Hellraiser 4, by switching between history (prequel) & the contemporary future (sequel), indicates two things:
“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”
    ~Arthur C. Clarke
    And
"Any sufficiently analyzed magic is indistinguishable from science."
~Kaja & Phil Foglio, creators of Girl Genius web-comic

Being honest as much as I loved that The Thing's (2011) director and screenwriters respected Carpenter's movie with it's story, paying caution to the smallest details, creature design etc. the movie itself deserved to flop due to the execs and producer politics. Theatrical version was destroyed by fans due to being overloaded with crappy CGI. Studio ADI which worked hard on mechatronics, puppets and special effects for the movie did outstanding job. The director wanted as much practical effects as it was possible but after test screening producers decided to scrap all the prelatical effects, alter the 3rd part of the movie (which included huge Alien Pilot) and replace it with crappy cgi Rubick cube. Director didn't even tried to stand up for his vision, he simply obeyed the studio decision. What's funny the OG version is out there somewhere, they should just finish it and re-release it on blue ray.

I love the Thing prequel. It is an amazing movie that does a great job telling the story of the Norwegian team. The problem with the movie and the reason it's typically panned is the same reason American Werewolf in Paris is panned, they took a movie with exceptional practical effects and thought CGI would be an improvement. Unfortunately this is RARELY a reality. In most cases CGI takes away from the movie and makes the actors unbelievable, the movie unremarkable and the scares kind of humdrum. When Hollywood figures out the true magic that guys like Stan Winston brought to the horror genre we might get some great movies again

The Prequel Thing was more about fanservice than telling a story
Where The Original Thing was more like a "Who Dunnit, Who Isit, Who Goes There," and upon reviewings you see even more clues as to who or what is The Thing
Exploring the non-canon sequel, Things, reveals who was first and who was last
The Prequel Thing was very constricted and restricted to who or what needs to happen in order to mesh up with the original perfectly so as not to have continuity errors
Such as finding the remains of the Norwegian Outpost as a burning wreck so the crew of Outpost 34 can find the scene as is
Thing 2011 was a CGI cluster of dialogs and Easter Eggs and mentions that essentially made the whole Thing less scary than it could have been

At the last minute the fabulous physical effects (I've seen them) were "overpainted" with excessive amounts of CGI for reasons no-one can quite fathom. A sequence which reveals the alien pilot was replaced with a strange and unexplained hologram.
Personally I enjoyed the movie and it had a good plot, but the effects did let it down, and the overall atmosphere lacked the tension, paranoia and menace of Carpenter's original.

The only problem I have with the CGI in the thing, was the fact that they seemed to solely rely on it for everything. Carpenters "The Thing" had mind bendingly awesome practical effects, and showed that there was a lot one could do with what was physically possible. The prequel-sequel used CGI in every possible circumstance and tried a little bit too hard at putting too much about the monster out there. The thing should always be un-knowable, that's why its the thing and not something discernable, like the "Devourer" or the "Parasite".

The Thing(2011) doesn’t deserve as much hate as it gets, but CGI is not one of its strong points. The vast majority of hate the film gets is because of poor and jarring cgi. That and the fact that throughout production it was being promoted as a full on practical effects buffet with many bts bits providing very striking practical work. The vast majority of what was shown was replaced with cgi or greatly digitally altered to the point of being unrecognizable.
It’s not bad film at all, but the bait and switch and passable-for-the-time cgi at best leaves a sour taste.

The Exorcist-films aside 1-2-3 just blend in my mind.
Well, good cliffnotes why Hellraiser 4 has a place in history - not that much why to whach though.
Completly agree on The Thing 0.
All Final Destination is fine until it says a new angle how cheating Death works - or does not work.

I always felt the Thing prequel never got a fair shake. I could tell it was trying to be an homage and fill in the gaps. I would’ve liked to see the directors original vision with the practical effects intact. Sadly I heard the whole experience soured the director from working with the studio system completely.

The ones I do agree to be underrated good watch on this list:
Amityville House 2, FD 5, The Thing prequel & Hangman's Daughter.
By the way...the Sadako in that prequel flick is way too beautiful for the role. I love her in Shinobi..the Japanese super ninjas flick...

Exorcist The Beginning suffers from the fact that its held to the standards of the original which is beyond iconic and will never be matched But what people don't seem to understand is a prequel is not meant to 'match' or insult an original, its just a back story,. ETB had some great moments....however, the other prequel Dominion was nowhere near as good

Good list. I quite liked the Exorcist prequel. I've never watched Hellraiser: Bloodline. Being a fan of the first, I thought it would have got the Hollywood treatment and wouldn't have the charm of the first, same with The Thing. But maybe I'll give them a watch.

The worst part about the thing and the CGI is that the director actually used tons of practical effects just like the original then the studio ruined it with all the very fake looking cgi. I’ve seen shots of what it could have Been and it was way better. It’s such a shame because it’s a good movie

I see a lot of people who say the thing prequal had too much cgi. I don't think the same namely because they made a film with all of the practical effects originally meant for the thing. It was called inatimate and it was terrible. Please watch it if you can and then decide.

Very nice movie recommendation list. Not all of them are good movies which everyone will like. But one I absolutely loved and dong understand why people don’t really like us The Thing prequel. It was very good. I really hate the big googly eyed actress who plays the main heroine, but the plot and monsters are great and do justice to the original film.

Why can't there be a serious attempt at a Hellraiser franchise reboot. Drop the crap sequels and remakes and treat it like some of the other reboots. Really expand on the Cenobite history and lore, like the graphic novels...

As far as Hellraiser Blood line if the studio would have just left it alone and let it run as originally extended it would have been so much better. As usual they butt in and fuck everything up.

I usually agree with you but not this time. Prequels aren't necessary at all. They are just a way for studios to milk the original movie as much as they can. It's also a way for them to make movies without having to come up with new ideas. The movie industry hates new ideas. They can't be sure to make money that way. Far better to keep pouring over the same ground over and over again
