  • Toronto Transit Commission 7900-8099 were Orion 07.501 Buses built and delivered between 2006 and 2007. They were the first buses the TTC ordered that used the Cummins ISL Engine. These Buses operated exclusively out of Queensway garage. They were powered by an 8.9 litre turbocharged Cummins ISL diesel Engine with an Alison B400R Transmission. They were part of an order of 330 buses, which included 180 clean diesel buses ( 7900-8099) and 150 diesel electric hybrid buses ( 1000-1149), which was a contract awarded by the Toronto Transit Commission to Orion in early 2005. All units were given automated stop announcements between late 2007 and early 2008 and had driver barriers installed on them in 2009. Due to safety concerns with passengers standing while traveling on the highway on the 900 Airport Express route ( then known as the 192 Airport Rocket), the TTC decided to install luggage racks on units 8000-8011 in January 2013, making those 12 units officially confined to the route.
Rebuild and refurbishment: They received their midlife rebuild between late 2014 and early 2016, which included new flooring, blue seats at the front for priority seating, new doors, which were more plain and robust, and bike rack replacement. All of the 79xx units with the exception of 7933 and 7970 had their original wider bike racks replaced with narrow ones. As of August 2023, 7970 is the only bus in the entire system that has the older bike racks. 7933 also had it but it recently retired. The doors they were delivered with were replaced with plain black doors. As for 8000-8011, they were repainted with a gold livery in 2015 and given luggage racks 2 years prior to promote service for the 192 Airport Rocket, now known as the 900 Airport Express. The upper five sixths of the front were painted black. The TTC logo was placed at the back window on both sides of the bus. The livery also had a slogan " your journey starts here". 7911 was the first unit to be rebuilt in September of 2014, and 7940 was the last unit to be rebuilt by April 2016. In summer 2016, 8026 was equipped with the new VISION System. Eventually, all units were equipped with VISION by January 2019.
Retirement: in December 2018, 7936 was retired because of an engine failure, followed by 7929 in February 2019 also because of an engine failure. In May 2019, 7907, 7911 and 7939 were sold to Sault Ste Marie Transit. In July 2019, 7901 and 7904 retired after being vandalized. In July 2020, 8058 and 8095 were officially retired after getting into separate collisions. In May 2021, 8045 was retired after it caught fire while on route 73C Royal York. In December 2022, 8000-8011 were withdrawn along with 7955-7958, 7953 & 7961. Between January & March 2023, units 8000-8004 and 8007 were retired. These buses were replaced by New Nova Hybrids being delivered to Wilson, which is why Queensway received the NG Diesels & EPA10s. As of now, all of the OG Diesels are retired from revenue service, however, 7913 & 7952 are being used as Island Buses, and 8079 & 8091 are awaiting preservation.
Reassigned units: 7900-7905 were reassigned as Events Support Buses. 7906 and 7908 were reassigned as Events Support Buses to replace 7901 and 7904 due to vandalizm on the original units. 7955-7958 were reassigned as EMS Transport units but retired in December 2022. 7937 and 7950 were reassigned as Events Support Buses but retired between March and May 2023. unlike the other Events Support units, these units still had revenue service equipment such as PRESTO readers, bike racks, next stop announcements and VISION System. Between March & October 2023, 8005, 8006, and 8008-8013 were reassigned & converted into Shelter buses. In July 2023, 8038 was reassigned & converted into the 2023 Caribana Bus.
Deployment: 7900-8099 were based out of Queensway Garage and were found on the following routes: 15 Evans, 30 High Park North, 37 Islington, 40 Junction Dundas West, 44 Kipling South,45 Kipling ,46 Martin Grove, 48 Rathburn, 49 Bloor West, 50 Burnhamthorpe,66 Prince Edward, 73 Royal York, 76 Royal York South, 80 Queensway, 110 Islington South, 111 East Mall, 112 West Mall, 123 Sherway, 189 Stockyards, 203 High Park, 300 Bloor Danforth, 315 Evans Browns Line, 337 Islington, 900 Airport Express, 937 Islington Express, 944 Kipling South Express & 945 Kipling Express.
Other Interesting facts: These Legendary Buses have been in service for over 18 years, and are now unfortunately retired. The original bike racks that the 79s were equipped with were recycled from the retired Orion VI CNG units (9200-9249), which is why most units entered service with bike racks already installed. The original headlights they had were replaced with LED Headlights. 8006, 8017 & 8062 were the first buses to be equipped with the new LED headlights. 7900 was a December 2005 unit, while the rest of the 7900s were built and delivered in 2006. 8000-8099 was the last order of OGs that the Toronto Transit Commission had placed.
