My condolences, Bishop Dolan. To lose 3 siblings to suicide is a lot for one family. I have read articles before about how churches should be addressing the issue of suicide. You are the very first priest I have heard speak up and speak out. I believe it takes courage to that. Thank you! May God continue to bless and protect you. May He continue to give you the strength to discuss this difficult subject. I agree with you; by talking about it, it lowers the stigma. People hopefully will ask for help. I also think there is a misconception that religious, faithful people will not have a mental health illness. We are all human and prone to all kinds of illnesses.
Father Chris Alar, Divine Mercy MIC, has also spoken about his grandmother who had killed herself. He has co-written a book with Jason Lewis MIC called: "After Suicide:There's Still Hope for Them and You." One of their staff members who worked closely with Father Chris also committed suicide. You can find the episode where Father Chris discusses this subject on his UA-cam podcast Divine Mercy.
Fr. Chris Alar wrote Beyond Suicide: There is Hope for Them and You after his Grandmother died from suicide. Great book about a sad subject. It helped me deal with the death of a loved one.
I thank God that Bp. Dolan is able to use his own experience of sorrow to help others. May God bless his ministry to those who are grieving and struggling.
I love Bishop Dolan’s total honesty. Even in that terrible grief his faith must be such a comfort. And the fact that he can say and offer masses for his loved ones. He has turned tragedy into mission.
Dear Bishop Dolan, I can’t begin to imagine how intense your prayers are in light of the burdens that you endure. Thank you so much for your strength and your courage. But most of all thank you for your faith. You will forever be in my prayers.
This just proves you can have a catholic Christian family and It is great to be raised with faith. Still, some things are missing. Active talking and dialogue is essential. These issues have to be addressed and not swept under the rug. It is so important !🙏🏻♥️ May they rest in peace kf the lord 🙏🏻
My deepest condolences to the Bishop. In addition to commitment to the church and church-related activities, a deep commitment to Jesus Christ Himself is so very important. It is, in fact, EVERYTHING. It's easy to be so involved in activities that a relationship with the Lord almost gets lost in shuffle. HE should be the first, greatest and most important relationship of all.
One night I had a dream of a friend that committed suicide. I saw him in this dark place and his clothes were very old and raggedy. He looks very sad and I told why are you so depressed. He stood up and I saw the ground was muddy and his ankles were chained. Please someone explain this dream for me?
It sounds like he urgently needs your help. His soul may have been just about saved but he may still have to suffer intensely in the lowest deepest part of purgatory. You can shorten his prolonged suffering by making acts of contrition on his behalf prayed from the heart. He needs you to pray for him.. Several Catholic masses offered up for the repose of his soul and in reparation for his sin of committing suicide would help him immensely. You could also offer up your Holy Communion for him at Mass, sprinkle some holy water on his grave, light a blessed candle to relieve his suffering, offer the stations of the cross on his behalf, the Divine Mercy daily, rosary and Gregorian Masses will all help to relieve his painful suffering and please God shorten his duration in purgatory.
We express our condolences to this man and his family. What huge broken hearts they all have. May peace be in their lives, alongside hope to continue and try every single day to be happy
Grace and peace to you in Christ. Many years ago, thousands were attending a Christian conference. Whilst teaching, the speaker 'heard a voice' saying, pray for the suicidal. He ignored this prompting of the Holy Spirit until the 3rd time. When he complied, he asked the people to stand for prayer if they struggled with thoughts of suicide. He was uttery stunned that over 3000 people stood up for prayer. In my church, one recently widowed lady, my closest friend, took her own life. That opened the door to some of us requiring counselling because her death made us aware that it can happen even in a church. At the funeral, her sister read from Romans 8. Who can separate us from the love of God, (in Christ) Neither death, LIFE, angels, demons, principalities, powers etc. May the Father of ALL comfort, comfort us in ALL things, always.
My heart aches for Bishop Dolan. Obviously there is a chemical imbalance for these siblings to be so in despair. May they RIP and may Bishop have the peace of Christ.
I knew 2 people who died by suicide. Both made the effort to be faithful in the Church and yet still had plights that needed to be addressed. Bishop Dolan seems to want to do right by establishing this new ministry in Phoenix and I hope more dioceses will follow his lead.😢

It's takes a lot to carry out a suicide; one can only imagine what the individual was going through, which made suicide look like the better option.

People who commit suicide really don’t want to die. They just don’t want the pain anymore and it’s really not their fault that they have the pain. Some of them could not forgive themselves for what they have done. There are people who have committed hideous crimes but were forgiven and reborn again through God. So I never believe that an all loving God cannot forgive someone who had committed suicide and even punish him. I know it’s hard because you don’t have an answer so just pray. Not having an answer now doesn’t mean there is no answer to it. The answer lies on the other side and you will know it eventually. So just pray and leave the rest to God.
