@@doctorjones278 Actually it's more a matter of Nez being not a commercially minded artist that impacted on his reception as a solo artist. @@cherylhulting1301 Exactly that, Cheryl. People who hate Nez seem to only see the surface tension without researching what was truly going on beneath. He fought for them to be a real band, for their own songs to be used, and for the band to play on their own albums. Against all odds, they learned the instruments assigned to them (it should've been Mike-Bass, Davy-Drums, Peter-Lead, Micky-Rhythm), recorded Headquarters themselves and went on tour. All because Nez had the vision and leadership to rally the group behind him. He was just stuck in some terrible situations and tried his best to make them successful. @@cherylhulting1301 I still maintain that Michael Nesmith is the Godfather of Country Rock. He is really the one artist who Championed it long before anyone else, or at least popularized it in the mid to late 60s and early 70s. His songs with the Monkees, like Papa Gene's Blues, Sunny Girlfriend, While I Cry, Nine Times Blue, Listen To The Band and Good Clean Fun, among other, and his first few Solo albums, show his Passion and Desire for the Country Rock genre. His Solo song Joanne was played on both Rock and Country stations. I think it was largely because of Nesmith that the Trio of Mike, Mickey and Davy appeared on the Johnny Cash Show. Cheryl, I liked your reply. Very interesting.
I think the most charismatic thing about Mike was his natural presence of leadership. He could just stand without saying a word, yet you knew he was in charge.
Love the fact that these harmonies aren't typical of them. Usually Davey had the higher parts... but this combo.... imagine some of the so called singers of today trying something like this. WITHOUT auto-tune!
Though I do shamelessly like many of the Monkees' bubbly Kirshner-peddled pop songs, there's something special about the pieces Nesmith contributed to the group. This one is beautiful, and well performed by all three extant Monkees.
Sedgewick I so much can't enjoy Kirshner/happy that these guys got to do, eventually, things that were new, unusual, and so much more original. All a matter of taste, ultimately/I'm jest a speakin' fer me-self. ;-) So much joy on their faces when they got to be themselves instead of commercial products.
Nothing wrong with liking their Don Kirshner-era material. There's gold in every stage of the Monkees' career, especially when they reunited in the years after their 1970 disbandment.
I love to hear Mike sing with his lovely accent! It makes me feel so warm, snuggly and safe, as if his two arms were hugging me and telling me everything will be alright.
No doubt...I've been listening to Nesmith's albums lately and have noticed he's a seriously good songwriter. I had never before noticed how many exceptionally good songs he has written.
Rest In Peace Michael. Thank you for coming out on the road one last time so we could show you how much you are loved, and how much being in our lives meant to all your fans.
Aww, I love this version. The studio version (Missing Links vol 1) is lovely as hell but doesn't have Micky & Davy singing such sweet harmonies. Hearing the 3 of them singing together makes a haunting song even more stirring.
God bless Johnny Cash, for going with his heart, and nothing else, always, including having this on his show. God bless him, Michael Nesmith, the Monkees and everyone who cares about goodness, and Music‘s role in promoting it (goodness)
I remember the Cash Show back in '69 and '70. I was 9 and 10, but didn't get to watch it as we only had one TV. But Johnny was such a cool Dude for having acts like the Monkees, Dylan, Derek/ Dominos, Linda, James, Neil and Joni all on his show.
I just love this version!! Davy doing harmony and not lead...it's just perfect. Mike is just an incredible singer/songwriter. He is a wordsmith. I could listen to him sing all day long. 💕
This recording was before my time, but it's interesting to see a so-called 'boy band' that could actually sing harmony, without auto tune, or any digital processing or correction.
I saw him sing this in SLO the night before last. Once he started to sing Mike transformed back into a young man before my very eyes. He had a full head of brown hair and sideburns. It was magic! And no, I was not on drugs. Just high on the MUSIC ALONE. (What an idea!)

One brilliant thing about Nez's writing is that you know that even though the songs are about breakups and goodbyes, he could probably actually pull off the great lie of "we'll still be friends". Cant get enough of Nez
GingerGilligan I also can't get enough of "Nez", but I have a huge crush on him. (Only when he shaved. Otherwise i just listen and don't watch. Sideburns I can handle, but not the full beard)
GingerGilligan I so wonder, in my later years, if having a beard meant not meeting many wonderful, creative, happiness-bringing women. Was it only...that? was it that simple. hmmm,
Just a prime example of Michael Nesmith's songwriting craftsmanship. Such a shame it wasn't released until the first of the Missing Links volumes in 1987.
What a gem of a clip! Great song, and how wonderful to hear them singing (beautifully) on TV live, accompanied only by Mike's acoustic guitar. Thanks so much, trixieout!
it's hard to believe (monkee humor) that this was left off the "headquarters" album. i was looking at the track list to see what i would have sacrificed to have it on the original release, and the only one is "forget that girl". even though i love that song,"nine times blue" is the better tune. thank goodness for deluxe editions!!
True, I didn't make myself clear. I am actually only fond of the acoustic demo version that appears as a bonus track on the deluxe version of Headquarters. Thanks.
