  • Reading Orientalism: Introduction (Part 1)| Edward Said | Postcolonialism
    This is first in my series of videos on Edward Said's 'Orientalism." Said's "Orientalism," is one of the most significant books in postcolonial, literary and other fields of humanistic and social sciences studies. If you have ever wondered "What is orientalism" or how does Edward Said employ and explain orientalism as a concept then this series on actually reading Orientalism can be of much use to you.
    The page numbers that I refer to are from the 1994 Vintage Books edition. I strongly recommend that you should read the book along with these video conversations:
    In so many ways Edward Said can be considered the founder of postcolonialism and he certainly has had a huge influence on postcolonial theory and postcolonial studies.

    Sir, i am an undergraduate student. Previously, i was trying to read the book by my own but it needed some explanation and discussion to make it more understandable. After seeing this firsr part on the introduction i realized that this is what was missing and what i was looking for. Thank you so much for starting such a remarkable intellectual programme. I have set a separate time for doing this with you. May Allah bless you.

    Professor Raja thank you so much for your considerable effort and contribution. It's very helpful! Could you please provide some bibliography on the controversy of the epigraph on Marx? It's not the first time that I encounter this kind of criticism regarding Said's "out-of-context" usage of ideas and whatsoever and would like to examine that thoroughly. (I've read about similar "accusations" regarding his writing on the intellectual combining Gramsci and Benda, and Auerbach's Mimesis).

    • @masoodraja
      @masoodraja  3 роки тому

      Thank you. That quote comes from Marx’s essay: www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1852/18th-brumaire/ch07.htm. You can read it in context at this link.

    • @masoodraja
      @masoodraja  3 роки тому

      Here is the Mrx quote within its original context:
      “The small-holding peasants form a vast mass, the members of which live in similar conditions but without entering into manifold relations with one another. Their mode of production isolates them from one another instead of bringing them into mutual intercourse. The isolation is increased by Frances’s bad means of communication and by the poverty of the peasants.
      They are consequently incapable of enforcing their class interests in their own name, whether through parliament or through a convention. They cannot represent themselves, they must be represented. Their representative must at the same time appear as their master, as an authority over them, as an unlimited governmental power that protects them against the other classes and sends them rain and sunshine from above. The political influence of the small-holding peasants, therefore, finds its final expression in the executive power subordinating society to itself.”

    Why the idea of orientalism related to geography

    • @masoodraja
      @masoodraja  3 роки тому +1

      I think it is related to geography as well as conceptional production of knowledge. Said, just wanted to see how this one region is represented in Europe. You can apply it any regions of your choice. But I do recommend reading the book very carefully,
