    Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

The longer case neck of the .222 Rem made it more accurate. It was shortened in the .223 Rem because a shorter neck feeds better in autoloading rifles.

The .223 Remington (designated as the 223 Remington by the SAAMI[4] and 223 Rem by the CIP[5]) is a rimless, bottlenecked rifle cartridge. It was developed in 1957 by Remington Arms and Fairchild Industries for the U.S. Continental Army Command of the United States Army as part of a project to create a small-caliber, high-velocity firearm. The .223 Remington is considered one of the most popular common-use cartridges and is currently used by a wide range of semi-automatic and manual-action rifles as well as handguns.

In south Texas, during the 1970s, the 222 was a popular centerfire round available in smaller and lighter "Youth" rifle. It was often assigned to four season truck gun duty and was, of course, useful for ladies and young people.

In France we've got the same legal problem, .223 and 7.62x39 are considered "war calibers" and banned (while 7.62x54r, .308 W, .303 Br, 30-06 and even .50 BMG are allowed for hunting and shooting...), that's why .222 is still popular, and all manufacturers rechamber their rifles in .222. But still, semi auto rifle with a capacity more than 3 rounds are also banned... We end up with straight pull o pump action AR15...

In Texas at least up until the 80s or 90s the .222 was responsible for lots of deer harvests. Head shooting accuracy but if you went to the body it wreaked havoc in the chest cavity. My grandfather hunted with one forever - shot all his deer center shoulder not behind the shoulder with that little 52gr bullet and oddly, never lost a deer. I hunted with one as well Remington 600 Mohawk w vented ribbed barrel and never had the guts to go center shoulder like grandad. I killed a buck with that gun just by flipping the safety off one day. The old Remington ghost firing deal

Some consider the .243 W as the bare minimum for deer hunting, so .223 is out, not to mention the .222. (In the UK a 6mm bullet in the smallest legal bullet diameter for deer and board hunting, in France it's the .222 r)

Looking back as a selection for a military cartridge, I don't know if you had as much room for powder and the maximum velocities, depending on bullet weight, but with that long neck and the shorter OAL, you could probably fit a very long very high BC high SD bullet in there.

.222 rem was the bench rest competition cartidge of choice before the ppc line finally over took it. 223 rem and 5.56 are not identical . The case capacity of the 5.56 is slightly less than .223 for the same powder charge. This is due to thicker lower case walls and heads. 5.56 military primers are heavy cup magnum primers .for cold weather reliability.
223 rem are standard small rifle primers. The chamber drawings differ drastically with longer free bore/ chamber throat and sloping rifling onset and very slightly larger diameter chamber itself with the 5.56 and a shorter free bore and sharper rifling onset and tighter tollorences . One for reliable rifle operation and cartidge feeding of high pressure ammo in adverse conditions , one for the best accuracy and consistency of shot placement. They even measure pressure in different areas between military and Saami chambers. Saami on center of case body and military mesures case neck pressure. So while they may both say 55,000 psi max , one is peak chamber pressure as the bullet realeases ,one is operating pressure .what's pushing on the bullet itself peak chamber pressure has been found to be 62.500-65,000 psi for 5.56. this is why it has the same velocity from a 20 inch barrel as the .223rem does for a 24 inch barrel. At one point they even had differant over all lengths 2.555 and 2.600 inches. It's deep rabbit hole ,cartridge nerd stuff. The .5.56 not being safe in a .223 chamber is true. But generally the trouble happens when it's a hot sunny day with a hot rifle already at minimum chamber specs and very warm ammo. Tollorences shrink in the rifle from thermal expansion , pressures spike from ambient temperature and an also thermally expanded casing . The Situations stack and things occasionally go boom from it. More likely ,you'll blow a case head and goose egg your barrel at the rifling onset .

When I took my course for gunsmithing and firearms expert( expert witness , and design ) I found the old Patrick Sweeney gunsmithing books and writings , writings from David Fortier, and the info in my course segment that was written by Jim L. Sullivan to pretty well cover all bases.
