Maria Kalaniemi is a Finnish accordionist. She was originally classically trained, but has become mostly as folk musician having played this music from childhood, besides her classical music studies, and also at the folk music department of the Sibelius Academy. Technically brilliant as a player, and adept at improvisation, she is also a very powerful, intuitive and sensitive composer, with pieces that stylistically touch in numerous areas but feature her own personality as the driving force. Melody is the meaning and with Maria, listeners are sure to feel her message deeply.

I just heard "Growing Dusky Polska" by Maria Kalaniemi, but played by the Minneapolis Guitar Quartet, and although I like this accordion version, for which it was probably composed, the guitar version is really interesting. If anyone has access to that guitar version and can post it, we would be very grateful.

I'm merely quoting the sleeve notes from the album. If you think it's wrong, take it up with the author of the quote.

Beautiful. It sounds rather Middle Eastern; looking at the sleeve notes, I see that's intentional: "Skymningspolskan (Growing Dusky Polka) ... originally written for accordion, percussion, and acoustic guitar, is an Eastern-flavored work, at times mesmerizing and tinged with melancholy".
