  • We've all heard that each and every snowflake is unique. But in a lab in sunny southern California, a physicist has learned to control the way snowflakes grow. Can he really make twins?

DEEP LOOK is a ultra-HD (4K) short video series created by KQED San Francisco and presented by PBS Digital Studios. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Get a new perspective on our place in the universe. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small.
    * NEW VIDEOS EVERY OTHER TUESDAY! *
California's historic drought is finally over thanks largely to a relentless parade of powerful storms that have brought the Sierra Nevada snowpack to the highest level in six years, and guaranteed skiing into June. All that snow spurs an age-old question -- is every snowflake really unique?
“It’s one of these questions that’s been around forever,” said Ken Libbrecht, a professor of physics at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. “I think we all learn it in elementary school, the old saying that no two snowflakes are alike.”
    --- How do snowflakes form?
Snow crystals form when humid air is cooled to the point that molecules of water vapor start sticking to each other. In the clouds, crystals usually start forming around a tiny microscopic dust particle, but if the water vapor gets cooled quickly enough the crystals can form spontaneously out of water molecules alone. Over time, more water molecules stick to the crystal until it gets heavy enough to fall.
--- Why do snowflakes have six arms?
Each water molecule is each made out of one oxygen atom and two hydrogen atoms. As vapor, the water molecules bounce around slamming into each other. As the vapor cools, the hydrogen atom of one molecule forms a bond with the oxygen of another water molecule. This is called a hydrogen bond. These bonds make the water molecules stick together in the shape of a hexagonal ring. As the crystal grows, more molecules join fitting within that same repeating pattern called a crystal array. The crystal keeps the hexagonal symmetry as it grows.
    --- Is every snowflake unique?
Snowflakes develop into different shapes depending on the humidity and temperature conditions they experience at different times during their growth. In nature, snowflakes don’t travel together. Instead, each takes it’s own path through the clouds experiencing different conditions at different times. Since each crystal takes a different path, they each turn out slightly differently. Growing snow crystals in laboratory is a whole other story.

Without directly talking about it, you made a wonderful metaphor about how every person's path to maturation is unique, that the journey itself shapes the way they are, and that no two paths are alike. Beautiful.
I wonder, was there a consideration to talk about how bacteria and other microorganisms act as nucleation centers for raindrops/snowflakes? Was it not relevant to this video? Also, I'd love to know whether the climate at a macro-scale determines the overall trend in snowflake shape, and how that effects the "type" of snow one would experience when skiing or snowboarding on it. For instance, in drier snowfalls, do the snowflakes take on less arms, and it gives a butterier ride? Or if its a more humid climate, are there more arms on the snowflakes, and the snow is grippier?
Thanks again so much for making this, I try to watch your new videos the second they come out. It's the best series I've ever watched, and that counts huge budget documentaries as well, because stuff like planet earth only shows the spectacle that is life and nature, but you guys actually contact researchers and elegantly describe the fascinating dynamics of how something works, which is way more interesting. And each video is in a bite size chunk. And they're beautiful. And the'yre exquisitely shot and paced. And the script is great. And the narrator(s) has the perfect voice for this. Just makes me :)

I've never understood this. The general pattern might be similar, but two snowflakes would also have to replicate every imperfection, every molecular deposition, and every contaminate. Maybe that could be done in a lab, but in the sky? I dunno...

But are those truly identical? One in every 3000 hydrogen atoms is deuterium, an isotopoe of hydrogen. A snowflake contains millions of hydrogen atoms, so wouldn't deuterium be randomly spread throught? Of course, that'd change if that physicist had actually filtered deuterium out of his lab (somehow), but I still think that even those twins aren't truly identical.

I’m 58 years old now and our winters are nothing like they were when I was a kid. The most fun I ever had was during the blizzard of 1978. We got out for Christmas break a week before Christmas and didn’t go back to school until after my birthday on February, 22! We kept getting snowfall after snowfall that year! Yeah, but why do they create spikes if they would rather occupy a hexagon? Why in such a flat dimension as opposed to more 3D snowflakes as big spike balls?
I thought they required some kind of nucleation site as well.....so could that be an influence to the overall shape?
Long story short, if you make all conditions the same, you should expect the same thing, this hasn't really taught us anything.

Deep Look, I love your videos but I think your wrong on this one. I'm very skeptical, I want to see the math. Your telling me that over the total estimated lifetime of the universe (trillions of years) and trillions of planets, not one pattern of atoms will repeat in 2 or more snowflakes? I don't buy it. Snowflakes take up limited space with a set amount of atoms. Surely based on pure probability, with those variables, at least 2 snowflakes surely would be the same

      @Kalumbatsch 7 років тому +1

Flip a coin 300 times. The number of possible sequences (2^300) exceeds the number of atoms in the visible universe. When you are dealing with combinations of something, you get exponentials, which add digits to your numbers with every couple of choices you make. A trillion times a trillion is 10^24, that would be just about 80 binary choices (log_2(10^24)).

Chigs1764 There nearly infinite possibilities for the shape of a snowflake. The universe however has not been in existence for a nearly infinite amount of time

There is no such thing as "nearly infinite".

completely awesome. I share these with my engineer husband who would only delete the mail if he subscribed. He reads stuff he gets from me though. I wish you'd do a Deep Look on cat's whiskers and the pads they grow from. I love my cat and love it when he stares at me. It's really special being stared at by a cat.
