Hopefully the neighbors weren't building a house of cards in their backyard, that's the only thing this ball could have broken.

Matthew Levine Or there could have been a broken circuit, and the aluminium ball lands in the break, completing the circuit and burning the house down.
That's why I put golf balls in mine - it's the sensible thing to do.

Slings were historically either short slings or long slings, meaning they had different range or accuracy. Long slings were used with the helicopter technique to keep the ammo from falling out if it touched the ground, so not much force was needed until the release. Short slings were more accurate and could hurl heavier objects such as stones. Traditionally the short slings windup is similar to a trebuchet, starting from a standstill behind you and coming up over your head.

for long distance yes long as your out strechted arms (finger tip to finger tip) as long as it Doesn't touch the ground. for training and accuratcy you would use the short length (about three quarters your length)

The loop gos over your middle finger and u hold the straight strand, helps a lot, i have been using the sling for 20 years and thats the best method for reliable shots. Also spin at a 45 degree angle to the groung and have a projectile that has a waight of about 1 oz should make things easer. Happy hurling!

You make a loop in one side, it can just be a slip not, which you fasten onto your finger. The knot goes on the other side and that’s the part that you let go of, not the loop side. Also a figure 8 or side arm throw is much less dangerous and easier to aim with.

+The King Of Random The way of making the pouch is pretty great. A few of my earlier slings were done by making a knot to "separate" in to three strands to make a pouch, and weaving a different material between the three stands
Fun fact: The Yarn in the middle is not needed. a pouch of even three strands will tighten around a stone, or foil ball enough to hold it in place while you are timing your release.

The only purpose of swinging continuously is to keep the projectile in the sling once to 3 times would be enough. Although constantly swinging doesn't hurt either, it was normally done to have the the sling ready to fire when you find your target.
I've been a fan of primitive weapons like the bow, the slingshot, AWA the sling itself. I normally like leather but this way of making it looks easier.

Hmmm a few questions come to mind: 1. Can you make this using pop bottle rope?
    2. What would happen if you use Grant's rope making machine instead of braiding the twine?

You're making a very common error while using the sling. It keeps going to the left or right because you're releasing it when it's in front of you, assuming that the tension the sling exerts on your hand implies the direction the projectile will travel. The problem is that the tension is caused by the sling wanting to continue moving to the left or right depending on the direction you spin it when it's in front of you fighting against the tension the rope exerts, which forces it to change course. You want to release the sling when it's to your left when spinning it counter clockwise, or to your right when spinning it clockwise, and it'll go straight.
