  • Containers and Kubernetes, to many of us traditional storage admins, are generally extremely complex and foreign. Add in another layer of VMware virtualisation, phew...!
Here is a quick tutorial of how easily and quickly we can provision persistent storage on vSphere 7 & vSAN / HCI for Kubernetes on VMware vSphere.

awesome simple example. if one is running Kubernetes distro/platform other than TANZU on top of VMware (vSphere, vSAN), what would be the cons or pros vs. running other Cloud Native Storage?

You can run other variants of k8s on vSphere no issues. VSAN is based on SPBM policies that defines the protection type and its characteristics. For developers consuming vSAN, all they do is need to map StorageClasses against the SPBM, and they can do PVC claims directly to vSAN. It will be assigned dynamically. Tanzus is an entire portfolio of products, vSAN is not neccesarily only tied to Tanzu. The value of vSAN still lies in the simplicity, SPBM and deep integration into the vSphere environment.
