Great video! I had to do chores to get half the money to buy my NES, and thankfully my Grandmother offered to buy the other half. I remember what I played most as a kid. Blaster Master, City connection, Contra, The Guardian Legend, Jackal, Legendary Wings, Life Force, Low G man, Mike Tyson's Punchout, Pro Wrestling, Rad Racer, and Rush n' attack.

I didn’t see an NES til around ‘94. My step dad had bought a bundle at a yardsale. The games I first experienced were Kung Fu, Kung Fu heroes, Mystery Quest, SMB 1-3, Double Dragon 2: The revenge and a slew of other that are slipping my mind right now. It was a huge bundle even including an NES Advantage. man I wish we made scores like that these days lol Awesome memories Jay! These are exactly the types of video I love to see! Thanks for sharing 🤘

Thanks, Scotty! What a great bundle of games - and yes, I miss scores like this, too. I remember finding Genesis games in the late 90s and yard sales for like $1 a piece, and just passing on them entirely because I was so focused on PS1 and PS2 stuff. I wish I could go back in time!

You play what you owned, that’s kind of what happened AND I am BIG on ice climber. I loved that game. Bubble Bobble was a big deal for us too and Circus Circus, Mappy, Balloon Fight, and Paper Boy.
This was a nice little trip down NES lane. Scott was proud you beat Mike Tyson, even if it was only that once 😂

I'm making it my goal to beat Tyson again this year. Bubble Bobble was big in our house, too!

One thing that makes me love these games as an adult are the save states I get from emulation. It makes things so much less frustrating. I have most of the games you've listed in cartridge, but nearly always use emulators now. I have a retro box that'll hook up to my CRT. It's perfect.

Well I wasn't playing the NES until '93 (being born in '87 and all) but I recall putting a lot of time into Legend of Zelda and Mario Bros when my best friend from kindergarten and I had chicken pox at the same time.
Also, with my cousins we played Super Off Road, Bigfoot, and Yo! Noid.

Nice video, and great list Jay! I was certainly playing a lot of Excite Bike, Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong Junior, and The Legend of Zelda myself during this time. Of course my parents got me my Nintendo NES when I was only a three year old. Although I could read some by then I had a hard time understanding many of the games. Though I still tried to play them. So feeling confused by a game is definitely something I can relate to. Not that my parents would have realized this, but even a fairly intelligent three year old like myself would have had trouble figuring out The Legend of Zelda. I know adults who require a game guide for games in that franchise. Although I was never terribly good at them I always enjoyed trying to play Gradius, and Top Gun. Still own physical copies of both Nintendo NES Top Gun games currently.

Needless to say, it kept me away from games until the SNES lol

I didn't get my NES until 1990, but there is definitely some overlap in our experiences. Some of my earliest memories of my NES are with Mega Man II and Castlevania. They are still two of my favorites on the NES today. If you have the time to set aside I really recommend trying to beat Castlevania. It's quite satisfying when you do. :D
I also got Ice Climbers at some point. I know it's not a great game, but I do like the game and have a lot of Nostalgia for it.
I saw excite bike at another kid's house. I got to play it, but I could never figure it out. I'm really terrible at that game.
I didn't play Punch-out until the mid 90's. A friend had it and I got to play it a few times. I beat it at some point in the 2010s.
Spelunker, Commando, Elevator action... never played.
Super Mario Bros; One of our neighbors owned it. It was probably the first NES game I ever played. It was one of the reasons my parents ended up getting an NES for me. I remember my dad asking me what i though about it. I told him I liked it and though the graphics were neat.
The Legend of Zelda. I remember seeing both Zelda I and II in many store demos and finding it to look interesting. I never played it until around 92 at a friend's house. His older brother was in his room playing the first game. I thought it looked super interesting so I asked what it was. We started playing it at his house not long after and that's how I fell in love with the series. It's become my favorite video game franchise in the years since. :)
**Edit** Forgot to mention Donkey Kong Jr! My parents got me Donkey Kong Classics which has Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr on the cartridge. I like(d) them both ok, but I think I like(d) Donkey Kong Jr a little better. It just feels a little better and more developed than its predecessor.

I highly urge you to try out Elevator Action out of those three. The others are...decidedly clunky by todays standards, but Elevator Action still has some fun tense moments of gameplay when you're waiting for the lift to come up and you've got to time whether or not to hop on the roof and go down or hope the guys won't pop out of the doors guns blazing. Thank you for watching, Loto!

My Top 10 up to that point in 1987
    1. The Legend of Zelda. I literally spent a whole Xmas vacation locked in my room playing this game. My brother was my co-pilot and made maps of every labyrinth in the game along with a key denoting all of the rooms that held an item in it. What a great Xmas. Its the game i played the most up to that point for the NES, and its not even close.
    2. Super Mario Bros. This was my introductory game for the system. The first time i saw it at a friends house they played it for a bit and i just watched. Believe it or not, they were more interested in still playing Atari 2600 games at the time. The second time i saw it was at a different friends house, and i actually got to play it this time. I was playing 2 player with my friends sister. He told me to go easy on not trying to hog the play time as id probably be much better than her. I was not. I was awful at the game. But from that moment on i knew the NES was something special, and i system i knew i had to have. Ive spent countless hours on this game.
    3. Castlevania. I didnt own a NES yet in 87 so we would rent them from local video stores along with a few games. This was one of the rental staples. Such a great game. I remember getting to the bat at the end of level 1 and having no idea how to beat it. My older neighbor friend took care of it for me. After that the game became easier. Not saying its an easy game as i still have never beat it, but i guess what im saying is i got the gist of it after that.
    4. Mike Tyson's Punch Out. Another perennial rental for us. This game was and still is amazing. It just has that it factor. I fondly remember trying to figure out the best way to beat each fighter and we were getting thriough them until we got to King Hippo. None of us had a clue of what to do. We had to look it up in Nintendo Power or call a friend. i cant remember. But anyway i real;ly felt like i was Little Mac making my way through these fighters. And if you ever wanted to be a legend there was nothing like being the first person in your friends group to beat Mike Tyson.
    5. Mega Man. We stayed away from this one for a long time because of the cover art. I thought it was going to be a Tron like game or something along those lines. Boy was i wrong. What a great action platformer. And aquiring the powers of a boss after you defeated them was revolutionary and mind blowing at the time. Now this game is tough as nails, and the only way i can beat it is using the select button spam special weapon cheese cheat, but that still doesnt take away from its brilliance.
    6. Kid Icarus. Rented this one with my friend Scott because it caught our eye in a Nintendo Power. Fun game but tough as heck. Ive still never beaten it. From the same team that made Metroid from what i understand. Not one i go back to now because i find it to frustarting. But hey it has a credit card in it lol.
    7. Golf. Yep. Its not good, but its what we had and we played the heck out of it.
    8. Ghosts N Goblins. My cousin owned this one. TOUGH! We tried and tried but i dont think we even ever got close to beating it.
    9. Trojan. Im probably the only person i know that likes this game. Early Capcom. I thought it was a fun early side scrolling beat em up.
10.Excitebike. The early start of games coming from your arcade over to home consoles. Its always been a fun 10-15 minutes pick up and play for me.
Thanks for the Video!! It brought back a rush of memories for me. What a fun time to be alive.

You had a very different '87 to me. I wouldn't even see an NES for 3 years. And even to this day, the only game I've put any real time into on your list is Commando, and on the Arcade and Spectrum nit the NES. Oh, and we had Frank Bruno's Boxing, which was a Punch Out clone and was on the Micro Computers before the NES got its port.
And, in 1987, we only had 10 years left to wait for the greatest game of all time 😉

We didn't have a whole lot of "owned" games, instead renting most of what we had. I spent many hours on Duck Hunt and Tetris though, Anticipation fired up a love of trivia, and I was (and still am) a mega-fan of Mega Man.
Of course in later years the advent of emulation meant I could play a lot more than when I was young, but I cherished getting lost in Zelda, and trying to get the secret Mushroom House to appear in SMB3.
And the Hell that was a malfunctioning cartridge.

3:14 I love Ice Climber too. I have my original Gameboy Advance copy CIB.
4:04 DK Jr ❤. I had the Colecovision version first. Brilliant and a great sequel.
