I won an autographed Van Halen CD in 1988. I used the Inventables X-Carve CNC Machine to make a really cool Van Halen inspired frame for it. Thanks to Inventables for sponsoring this project and supporting what I do!

I have exactly the same autographed CD!!! Hey Steve! Just saw your comment on my live Van Halen Guitar talk show today! Yeah my aunt won the same CD and sent it to me as a gift in 1989. It's signed in the same spots. Awesome job on the frame!!! Keep Rockin!!!
Hey Johnny! Wow, that's CRAZY man! I wondered if any other people who got one of these CDs would see this video and comment. Should've known it would probably have been you. I enjoy watching your videos and live streams. Thanks for checking out my video and commenting. It's cool that the signatures are in the same spot on yours too.
That is very cool. I'm loving the mix of hand work and cnc. Maybe next time we run into each other I can get a Steve Carmichael autograph.
Very nice Steve! I have a piece signed my G&R back in 1989. Would look good next to your Appetite piece.
Thanks Brian! Ooh, G&R is a good one. Adler signed my Appetite album, four more signatures to go. lol
Ohh....I really miss Van Hagar! They were great. I was at the show in Fresno when they recorded their live CD. My ears rang for days!
Never got any autographs from a band but we did get one of Todd Sucherman's (Styx) drum sticks. He tossed it to my wife. That will have to do I guess.
Whoa, so rad! This is a great way to showcase a treasured collectible or memento. The boys of Van Halen would certainly be proud.
Thanks! Yeah, I wonder if they might see this video someday. I tagged them on social media. :)
Thank you for coming to my live stream tonight. It was great to see you in the chat. Thumbs up on your awesome vid my friend! xoxo
Steve, you should do the VH logo on a piece of wood, using the X Carve? That would look awesome!
You didn't have a CNC machine 30 years ago. lol
Maybe shoulda painted the frame red, white and black to match Eddie's Guitar? And you couldn't have made this 30 years ago - you didn't have an X-Carve! Another awesome project Steve. [Oh and it's a shame the background music couldn't have been "Black and Blue" - copyright law heavy sigh].
Thanks William! Yeah, I think I found the closest VH-ish music I could find. It is annoying that I can't use the real VH music. I think it would really add to the video. I started out thinking I would just carve it from a pine panel and paint it, but decided to go with natural wood colors to try to achieve a similar look.
I have a Hawaiian surfer's hat autographed by Jan and Dean.
Oh wow, that's cool. I remember Jan and Dean from my older sister's albums.
Hmm, might have to find my STP Tiny Music autographed CD...
Ooh, what a good set of autographs that would be.
Hi Steve. Great project and nice choice of wood to set the whole thing off. I need to pack up my Gibson Les Paul custom and meet you in Atlanta to "Kick Out The Jams MF". What song is the from? I see you use Deft spray lacquer on the wood and then installed plexiglass to cover it all. Have you ever had a problem with Deft Lacquer reacting with other plastics? I made an end table a few years ago and used lacquer for a finish. During Christmas my wife had set a seansonal candle in a metal container that had plastic feet on it. When I moved it after the new year to put it away the feet had reacted with the lacquer. I know it is a reaction of the two chemically not getting along. The feet on the candle holder had looked like they had melted the lacquer leaving the foot print in on the table all the way to the wood. The candle never had a flame on it so heat was out of the question. Your thoughts? Just curious.
Hi Ed - I haven't had an issue with anything reacting with the lacquer, but I have seen warnings about this in the guitar world. Apparently, there are guitar stands out there that have padding that can react with nitrocellulose lacquer and mess up the guitar finish where it touches the stand. I believe that rubber surgical tubing stuff will react with lacquer and I've seen that on stands before.
I was front row at a Van Halen concert, last time they toured here in New Zealand. Something I'll never forget as it was a 3 day, no sleep mission. I have a signed poster from Everclear, my favourite band, that has been waiting for a frame for about 6 years haha.
I've seen them about 5 times. First time was the 1984 tour and one of the best concerts I've seen. 3 with Sammy, and 1 more recent with Dave. I love Everclear and have their CDs.
Came out great and you can justify waiting that 30 years until you could get the Xcarve. 30 years ago you would have been wearing yourself out with a coping saw, then filing, then sanding etc.
Yes, that's true! I did have a jig saw when I was 22, but it shocked me whenever I plugged it in. lol
Awesome Video Steve ! I Have Several Pro Wrestling Autographs !
Thanks! That's awesome! Wondering what a wrestling theme frame would look like.
Awesome project
Thanks Kyle!
Great video. What a great way to display this!
Thanks Gene
Love it Steve! Need to do one on my Robert Plant autographed Fate of Nation's album! Great job.
Woah, a Robert Plant autograph...that's awesome!
There are a few musicians I have helped out over the years and they have thanked me in on the liner notes for the CD. Now you are motivating me to figure out how to frame them!
Wow, that is really cool that you have those. Hope you can frame them somehow. I wish I had done this a long time ago.
Nice Job Steve - better late than never. I have two Norm Abram autographs - one from a random encounter in North Carolina and another from a woodworking show.
Wow, cool! Norm is a good one to have. I keep hoping I will run into him someday. He had a signed photo on his website that you could print. I had that in my shop for a while, but not like a real autograph.
I have a Megadeth - Killin is my business first print vinyl autographed that I need to frame!
Oh that's really cool! I have that album and peace sells.
You make the coolest projects!
Thanks Joy!
Way to go, Starving Youngun! Happy SPRING!
Thanks! Happy Spring to you too!
Really Cool build for your treasured signed CD, now you can show it off.
Yeah, it's been sitting in my CD cabinet with 100 others. Good to have it out on display now.
Who’s Sammy? We all know it’s Dave or nothing. 😉
Ha! I like both. As long as Eddie and Alex are there, I'm good.
Now the question is when did youget your first cd player?
I think it was around 1985. It lasted a long time but eventually stopped working. I remember how Dire Straits, Steely Dan, Pink Floyd sounded so awesome.
Man I would .love one of those!
Hi Ken! I still can't believe I won the autographed CD. It seems funny now 30 years later to mail in a post card to win something. lol
awesome. Sammy would really dig this. only wish I could tag him.
Thanks! I'll tag him in my Instagram photo of it.
That came out great! Never did get any autographs but I met Martin Sheen once. :) He was surprisingly really nice and easy to talk to. - Heidi
Hey, that's cool! I feel weird asking for autographs.
@@SteveCarmichael I was at work so it didn't occur to me to ask. :) I worked for a very luxury gated condo at the time in the maintenance dept. He had rented an entire top floor while he was in the town shooting a movie. I was moving some heavy equipment in a cart from one area to another outside and he was sitting out on one of the benches on the grounds. He offered to help me. :) I thought that was super sweet but I declined. I was used to it.
Great job Steve. 👍👍
I’ll sign some Argyle Dog stuff that you can mount.
Awesome! I could do an argyle pattern frame.
Looks totally cool
Stumbled upon your channel and was pleasantly surprised to see a fellow Georgia boy and Van Halen fan. I never got an autograph from the band but I did security for them at the Omni in for 2 shows in ‘86. If I remember right one got cancelled and rescheduled.
I’m getting back into doing some projects and was looking at getting a CNC. I need to do some more research before making the plunge. Great videos brother and greeting from Pickens Co.
Hello in Pickens County! I grew up in Marietta, but live in Lawrenceville now. I saw VH at the Omni for the 1984, 5150, and OU812 shows, so we were probably there the same night. The CNC is fun and I keep finding new things to make with it all the time. I make a lot of stuff that I don't video. It's pretty easy to recoup the cost by just making signs for people. For example, making signs for apartments and HOA neighborhoods that have custom wooden signs around the clubhouse, etc. can make some $.
Steve Carmichael, I lived on Franklin Rd. back in the day (when it was actually County) and went to Banberry Elem. Worked for the City for 14 Years.
I was definitely there. Was at every VH concert from ‘80 on. Greatest concert ever!
I went to Southern Tech and hung out at Kings Head Pub a lot seeing bands.
Eternal memory of Van Halen.
I have over 35 Weird Al autographs, including one that i had tattooed on my leg
Oh man, I love Weird Al. I relate to his quirkiness and humor. Tattooed autograph is hardcore. Wondering how you got 35 signatures. lol
@@SteveCarmichael ive seen him in concert around 40 times and have been lucky enough to have met him at alot of the shows and at other events over the years. The most recent one was at his Walk of Fame ceremony. It was a fan driven campaign and all of the fans that contributed to it were invited as VIPs and got to go to a private party afterwards. It was an amazing experience.
Awesome work Steve! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
Thank you Fred! 👊🏻
Dude!! That's pretty sweet!!
Thank you very much!
Great work, Steve! Awesome!!!
Thanks Tommy!
👍🥇👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 share on Facebook 👍 great Steve
Thank you Giovanni!
Please Steve,1 photo for you on Messanger 👍😂😂😂
Great work very nice
Thank you Harvey!
Cool! Great work, Steve!
Thank you Dave!
Always a great job.
Thank you Pat!
Van Halen Steve? No, that's Van Hagar.
Ha ha, yep! Before Van Cherone. ;)
Pretty cool!
Thanks!
AWESOME Steve
Hey JP, thanks! And thanks again for the Flakes! They're gone! lol
@@SteveCarmichael hahahaha awesome!! ill send some more back with Chad when he comes over for Makers Central ;)
Great job Steve. Clever idea that turned out really nice. 👊🏼
Hey Chad, thanks!
Rock on Steve!! :)
Thanks Kathleen! \m/
I've got an X-Men #1 Vol 2 signed by Stan Lee that I've considered framing.
Oh cool Charles! You might want to read up on finishes and woods to make sure not to use anything that would harm that. I've heard that pro picture framers use archival quality materials/supplies of some sort.
Steve, WOW! Awesome memento!Glad you got it up on your wall. Looks great!
Thanks Mac! Yeah, I tend to procrastinate sometimes, but 30 years? lol Finally got around to it though.
Looks rad! Great job Steve!! 👊🏻
Signed by Sammy? At least it wasn't Gary... Great project Steve!!!
Thanks Chris! Yep, Sammy! I would like to have Dave's and Gary's. I am an Extreme fan too since Hey Kid Ego. I really wanted Gary to do well with VH, but just wasn't a good fit I guess. VH III has its good moments though.
Nice job
Thank you Dan!
Sick rare VH score. Looks great. I'll give you 150 for it.
How about 5150? :)
You should see my v-bass...
Cool, is it a flying v? I think I was just your first subscriber. :)
Steve Carmichael nope. But thanks for subscribing! I am lacking in the video production but not the woodwork
lovely frame!
Thank you Luanna!
@@SteveCarmichael You are welcome to honest praise. Love your energy and the complete projects in the time you present. Looking forward to your next project!
First-my next project-Frankenstrat!!
Sweet! That's on my to do list. I have some premium Alder waiting for it.
"Black and Blue" is the best song on that album...nice job man...;-p
Yeah, I like that one and Finish What Ya Started. Thanks!
Cabo Wabo! Nice frame, Steve.
