  • After seeing a request by bassco on 3D Central AVS Forum for anyone to convert Michael König's compendium of Earth flyover footage from the International Space Station, I thought I would have a go.

I downloaded high resolution image file ISS029-E-19699 - 19914 from the eol.jsc.nasa.gov site which contained 215 time lapse image files. These were loaded in to VirtualDub then cropped, resized to 1920 x 1080 and turned into a Huffy avi sequence,
As the image sequence was rather jerky, I decided to use Motion Perfect set at 400% to generate extra inbetween frames to make a smoother movie.

To convert this movie in to 3D, I had to create a depth map, and as there was no change in depth during the whole sequence, I could use one for all 861 frames. Using VirtualDub,I duplicated the depth map to 861 frames.

These two files were then loaded in to 3Dcombine to create a side by side 3D movie which was then squeezed and encoded to H264 ready to be uploaded to UA-cam.
I have seen this clip on an LG 47LW550 3D TV and it looks quite promising.
    NB The clip is mute:
