"Sorry we scammed you. If we knew it was you, we would have tried to bribe you. Also - do you want a warranty with that?"
- Dell, probably
I would bet money on that being in an email or tweet. The thing is though hes doing this on purpose to see how these companies treat people like us, not influencers like him. If they wont treat potential customers correctly then why would they treat an influencer better? Because their whole business model is shady.
Underrated comment
The warranty price is going to be deducted from the bribe.
Allegedly
seeing Dell stub this low is just sad. Had they played their cards right they could have been in the position that Lenovo is in today. Well, they kinda were at one point in the 00'es.

Next secret shopper needs to include Lenovo and Corsair! Would like to see both of those added for next year/later this year.
Lenovo, yes. Corsair, well, they tried... Corsair didn't want the business, I guess.

Why are people so committed to a brand that has never done a thing for them. Its like the people on their knees over professional athletes. You should take this as a sign to shop elsewhere for your next purchase. Not as something to get pissed about and spread false info about a brand that has literally only taken money from you and doesnt care about you in the slightest.
Edit for context: I own a corsair PSU, case, and keyboard. The case was great at first but is honestly super lacking after owning it for 5 years. The PSU is ok with software that was janky from the start. The keyboard feels great, not their switches so makes sense, but the software is atrocious. They are mediocre at best. What have they done for you that has you slobbing their nob so much? Not to mention how I hear their warranties almost always get declined.

Dell pointed out they didn't double charge us for the warranty. That's fair, but they did still charge us for an on-site warranty we didn't want, then try to get us to send the system to the depot when we had a problem so... good job? -LS

I'm watching this video from a G5 5000. I was stupid and bought this, but when I tried to upgrade my GPU, I realized I couldn't due to the PSU issues. You're now helping me through building my first PC so I can actually upgrade. Never trusting Dell again.
Frfr it sucks getting scammed, I swear building a pc yourself is so much easier than it seems and just watch the ltt pov guide, makes it super simple

@@TonicofSonic Too late lol. The build went great and I now have a better pc than I could have dreamed of at a better price point and fully upgradable.
My husband ordered me an Alienware chair, and when I got it, one of the levers to adjust the height was broken because they attached it before packing it (it wasn't supposed to be attached). No big, I emailed them to let them know because I feel like companies should know about their stuff. They emailed my husband since he was the one who bought it with a new tracking number and a shipping label, instructing me to take apart the chair I just put together and send it back. I wasn't happy about that, but whatever. I packed it up and it was picked up the same day the new one arrived. The new one had the same piece broken. Not as bad as I can just glue on the lever. But yeah. I didn't even want a replacement because I don't have the time to be building chairs all day, I just wanted to give them a heads up about quality control, but we weren't given a choice on the matter. They also refused to speak with me, despite my husband and myself telling them that my husband wasn't in the country at the time and to relay all messages to me.

They sold unwanted onsite support and then said to RMA the computer when the ram sticks were lose. Lmao
That's a genuine illegal move by Dell.
I would say it's more of "probably an illegal move by Dell". I don't know what Canadian consumer laws are like, and I doubt either of us are lawyers. (I'm not. Just a highly educated lay person.) I know the US Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) and their state level variants SHOULD have a law for stuff like this, especially since the double warrantee thing looks like Linus paid for the same coverage twice is probably covered. But without looking up the exact law (and the related court cases), neither of us can say that's 100% illegal
@@jackielinde7568 if a customer declines a service and is still charged for it - then is denied that service when requested. That is illegal no matter where you are.
If you ordered a cake and you said "no writing" on it and they put "No Writing" in fancy letters and you asked them to remove it and they refused - yes that's wrong.
@@jackielinde7568 I am not a lawyer as well, hell, I'm not even from NA so I don't know a lot about laws in Canada or USA, but I'm pretty sure selling someone something they explicitly said they don't want is illegal everywhere. The biggest problem in a case like this for most people would be a he said she said aspect since there is no way to prove what happened and Dell would point to an invoice saying since we included it in the invoice, the customer agreed to it. But, in a case like this, where the call was recorded, a lawyer could make an easy case that the customer just didn't know what anything in the invoice meant since they don't understand the jargon that Dell used and knows nothing about computers in general so couldn't even check it on the website, but during the call she clearly stated she didn't want it, therefore Dell scammed her. I hope Linus talks it over with his legal team and maybe even sues them. That could set a precedent.
@@jackielinde7568 fairly sure it's illegal. If a customer has repeatedly said no to any warranty service and you collect their financial information and purchase not just one, but two forms of warranty service that isn't even able to be done on the customers side, then I'm fairly sure you've done something illegal. The FCC has hit cable companies for practices like this, so I imagine that this isn't lawful
@@Georgekartveli I doubt a lawsuit would get very far. Dell would just refund the money, and claim it was a mistake. No judge would waste their time on it.
A better thing to do would be to contact whatever canada's version of their attorney general is and file a complaint. And contact the bbb.
Or if they really wanted to take the time to stick it to em, get a list of canadian buyers that were scammed by dell and then contact their version of the attorney general.
To add to this: When my 1-year warranty of Dell was about to run out, they even called me on my phone to try and get me to extend it.
We have been trying to reach you about your Dell’s extended warranty

@@JayAR_YT they make good laptops from my experience
@@KasparOnTube Dell make good PC's, they don't however run a good sales/customer service which is what has been evidenced in this vid.
Let's face it Dells are for schools and offices, and laptops
@@Caveman13126 Me too. I bought the Dell G7, because I needed something powerful and rugged that would survive college use. and this laptop is a huuuuge step up in quality from the lenovo edge series I had, which basically came broken out of the box, with a weird mismatched clicky seam on the screen. I found out that the lenovo shipped without some internal part that held the screen together when the screen turned a lot of colors and _died_ and had to be replaced, and the geeksquad guys told me the piece was missing. I kinda hated lenovo after that.
Dell seemed better just because I love my current laptop so much, and before seeing this series, I might have tried to do business with Dell on a desktop PC. but now I will not consider them.
Please, please, please, reach out to Dell, I am DYING to hear what they have to say for themselves....
They'll give him some platitudes that won't actually translate to action. The reality is that whatever monetary cost can be associated with their reputation loss from this kind of thing is far less than the money they make by forcing offshore sales people to scam customers so they can afford to eat. The boutique game rig companies care about their reputation because gaming rigs are their life blood, and they don't operate at the sheer scale of companies like Dell.
It'll be some corporate 'Thank you for bringing these failures in service to our attention. We're sorry you had this experience and will do all we can to put this right for all our valued customers in future'... and then nothing happens - as you can see from the 2018 to this Secret Shopper series.
Reaching out isn't going to do anything, we just need people to be informed about the shady business practices dell does, and avoid purchasing their products.
they'll probably shrug and say "you bought a dell, what do you expect? water to not be wet?"
I imagine any public image damage this video will do, will be insignificant in the grand scheme of things, they’d return the warranty cash, promise to fix things, and do nothing in the end, cause the scamming makes them more money than not scamming. So few people probably notice or even complain they’ve been charged for something they didn’t want that in their immoral work ethic it’s worth continuing not caring about customers.
3:53 - "to make their commissions". As the person who worked at similar environment I want to clarify this part. While commission is an incentive to upsell yes, it's not the main reason employees sell it so desperately. Employees are given targets. Example: 35% of your computer sales must include antivirus, 20% must include extended warranties, etc. Sold too many computers with what customers actually want and not what company wants? Then there will be a performance review. And sadly the tone of voice in that sales agent woman voice sounds way too familiar to me. That's the voice of the sales agent who is deep in the hole of sales without any attachments. Believe it or not yes, she gets punished for selling too many computers. They are called "dead sales".
The employee doesn't care what GPU, CPU or PSU you are buying. They must simply find a way to convince you to buy attachments, or otherwise find a way to throw them in. There's a reason there's no breakdown of each part on the invoice.
Jeez... Here I thought helping people customize their pc would be a fun job with plenty of customer-employee engagements as they see you save them dollar after dollar on what they thought was necessary. Apparently the shopping experience is just as frustrating for the employee as it is for the customer.
And how can we ever expect pleasant and accommodating support when our purchase is considered a "dead sale" at day 1. No not even at day 1, as you're unknowingly antagonizing your sales person at each refusal of attachments.
Thank you for the insight. I hope whatever you are doing nowadays is more fulfilling and doesn't unnecessarily pressure you and your livelihood
That's... just brutality honest and it's truth. And that's true for every call center related jobs out there, and if you want to do a little search, you'd find the crippling reality of workers who just become so depressed and tired, that sometimes is just not worth anymore. Source? I mean, well... I'll just say that I'm not planning to accept a job offer in that area anytime soon, and I'm unemployed.
Same thing with best buy used to work there got a preformance review a few times before I quit because I refused to give the customers less than what I expected myself i would find them the best possible computer and then try and usually fail to get them to buy accessories got wrote up for telling a customer that he can get a cord for 5.99 at Walmart our price was 29.99 guess I wasn't a good asset but after working there for 6mo people started asking for me by name
This money incentive system has to change. Fact is, a company needs people to work the sales and customer service lines, regardless of whether they end up selling the products or not.
I work in a software company where customer service is done directly by the relevant departments, with two secretaries answering the calls and channeling them. You bet the customers get the best support when it's often the directors themselves who answer their ticket. And it's a midsized company, not a moms and pops store.
Either you do it this way or you keep your sales workers happy and stop breathing down their neck
My question for Linus, is that in light of the Dell mis-sell, which in many countries is a criminal offence under various trading standards regulations, did you report them to the relevant authorities? Because the concern for something like this is that if Agent Sarah can get scammed, think of all the people scammed who and had no idea.
If that happened, the sales rep who is likely pressured into up selling to keep their 2-3USD/hr. outsourced job would be used as a “to-blame” scapegoat and fired.
@@ridafakih8709 And ? The sales rep committed a literal crime. My sympathy for a low income worker ends the moment they are stealing from me.
@@ridafakih8709 Most likely not, Dell is just outsourcing to an overseas BPO, and has pretty much zero control over specific people answering the phones. The most that would likely happen is if it came to a head the BPO would just transfer the agent to another LOB. There are actually surprisingly FEW BPOs in the market. the vast majority of outsourcing is going to only one of a few large BPOs who manage multiple LOBs, in fact in some cases a specific agent may be tasked to multiple LOBs themselves.
Dell will just do what dell always does, say they will fix it and do nothing at all about it. Because their poor business model relies on spending next to nothing for quality sales and customer service agents, and instead relies heavily on attachments driven by finance companies and software vendors who are financing chunks of their production costs.
I hope there's a part 5 with Dell's official response to this.

Please make a follow up where Sarah confronts dell about being charged for items she did not order. Would be an amazing insight to how they handle this since it’s very likely it’s a frequent occurrence with them. Even a mention in WAN show would be fantastic.
I want to know what kind of customer recourse there is for Dell including two declined (several times) warrantees. There NEEDS to be a follow up. This conduct from Dell is over the top wrong.
We all know how they'd handle it. There's only one way they _can_ handle it, and I'm sure they do it every day-- "Oh, I'm so sorry. It looks like there was a glitch in our ordering system. We'll refund that portion right away".
I'm sure agents take these calls every day, but some of them have probably figured out that labor laws prevent Dell from "taking back" commissions they've already paid the employee when a customer returns a product. So even if the customer notices and returns it, the agent doesn't care because they already cashed that commission check 2 pay periods ago.
That would be awesome.
too late to do that, all these episodes were recorded long time ago, when linus anounced on a wan show that secret shopper was back it was already to late for those companies to prepare, and Dell got caught with its pants down. But dont take it wrong, this is good, the series in general, for the entire industry and the costumer.
@@davecarsley8773 The probability of the agent taking the refund call being the agent who made the sale seems pretty low. On the other hand the company knows who is "accidentally" selling warranties (and making them more money) and who is handing out lots of refunds.
I don't see any incentive for agents to jump into the latter camp.
Random parts of this video are getting blurred/censored... for example, at 2:38, covering up the record and plant on the wall. Don't know what's up with that.

@Jorus C'baoth Yes, that is true, but ain't most people gonna buy a PC even $1500. I'd buy a maximum $500 one, if I could. It is already of a fine price.
@@aakarsh1280 this series is targeted at consumers looking at getting a gaming PC. That population would absolutely spend $1500+ on a rig. No one ever said they made up the majority of the market.

Totally agree, let's give Dell an opportunity to explain and acknowledge their fraudulent activities and of course apologize and refund. If they dont do all of that then they aren't trustworthy. They have to acknowledge this illegal activity and explain clearly how they will prevent it from reoccurring.

Yea but hopefully there is no tech "enthusiast" out there who is buying from dell. I just really hope this video reaches people who do not already know better.
@@truetysgaming3693 For laptops I think dell is one of few I was considering (before this). For a desktop pc though, I’d rather build it or get it assembled by a local store.

It is and I’m loving it

Mhm and true... which is a shame as they are a big company and they should be able to afford actually helpful and knowledgeable reps not asking just for the warranty upsell x7 times after they decline...
Dell is humiliating itself. It's like beating a dead horse
Which is a shame, because they make great stuff. The fault is in the ordering process. Had they used the website instead of a paracitic sales rep, they could have gotten what I literally got a month ago: For $1156, it included an i7-10700F, 16GB ram, RTX 2060 Super, 256 M.2 drive, and 1TB HDD. imagizer.imageshack.com/img922/5907/YGYunL.jpg
And if you bump that budget to their $1500 range, you could have gotten some combination of i9, 2070 super, or 32gb ram. It's a fantastic deal.
Hey Linus. Is there going to be a part 4.5 where you have agent Sarah call and get a refund for the warranty support?
Sounds like a good idea, but at this time they already know about Sarah.
They will all give it already, because they know what's going on now
But did they tell Customer Service that?
Anyway, I'd love to see it.

Watching this 4 months later and looking at the sites I will have to say configuring a PC on Maingear was pleasant to go through. Prices are right on upgrades when it comes to major components. They mirror MSRP as opposed to basically selling you not only the preinstalled option at that price point PLUS adding the price of a new item like I see on a lot of the prebuilt sites.
I’m looking at Maingear too. $1,699 for a 3060 Ti and R5 5600x..and free shipping 👏🏼 everywhere else I’ve looked is about $200-$300 more. 🤦🏽♂️

On this matter, I do completely agree. Any misbehaving employee problems are almost invariably a management issue. Now, this management issue may originate from training being inconsistent, lacking, or being outright missing. Or, it may originate from the wrong goals being incentivized by management (e.g. Number of calls processed versus issues successfully resolved, etc.), but it's basically always caused by inadequate or incompetent management.
