  • The next installment in my From the Rails Up series. This time we're talking about what makes a locomotive stop, namely the brake rigging. We'll go through the two basic types and how they get the braking force from the air system to the wheels.
Also, I'm wanting to do something fun for you guys if/when I reach 10 subscribers, I mentioned a couple ideas I had in the video. If you have something you'd like to see, please mention it in the comments.
The next video I have planned will be over traction motors and combos. This time we learned what makes us stop, next time it'll be what makes us go!
    Thanks for watching!

Unbelievable how much is involved in the brake set up on locos, When all i know is car brakes 🤣 love your computer drawing break downs.

That animation was the first thing I ever managed to make move lol. Also, keep in mind, that's just from the brake cylinders to the wheels, I haven't even started on air stuff yet.

I volunteer at the Kentucky Railway Museum in New Haven, KY. These videos are great. Love the brake animation. Shows how everything works for those of us that don't work on trains on a daily basis.

I won't lie, I was pretty proud of that animation, as short as it was lol. That's the first, and to date only, thing I've ever actually managed to animate and make move lol. I'm hoping I can animate more stuff as time goes on.

Those cast iron shoes are nuts! I used to work at a museum where we ordered some for our cars... We had to order a whole pallet of them, which we didn't need, but it was a decently priced deal. They were much smaller than the ones for locomotive service and they don't cover the flange, but they still weigh about 35 pounds a piece. Needless to say, you don't want that landing on your foot.

@brysongrondin611 For sure! We have two switchers that use cast-iron shoes that wrap over the flange. One of our shop foremen told me he had one dropped on his thumb and it basically destroyed the two bones it hit. He said the doctors told him he was lucky they were able to save his thumb.

@@PowerTrain611 For sure. I'd hate to have to reshoe something like the 611 or the big boy. I can only imagine those big drivers come with big brake shoes.

@@CDROM-lq9iz Oh they do. 70 inch drivers for both if I'm not mistaken, and the shoe has to fit. I've seen 611s in person- they are massive. The biggest I've seen on an engine in working order!

    Hello.
The minimum brake shoe thickness rules are not part of 229.
They are under the braking rules for either passenger service or freight. 238 and I believe 232 respectively.
Not sure about 231 but 238 says the minimum needs to be set by the carrier.

That would certainly explain why I couldn't find in part 229 anywhere then. Thanks!

      cab tour?

That's not a bad idea. Kinda surprised I never thought of that to be honest. It'd be a relatively quick and easy thing to put together.
That said, my concern would be getting myself in trouble by filming that. I'd have to double check some things to make sure I cover my backside.

@@CDROM-lq9iz yeah it would be cool to do a sd40-2 and gp35 cab tour , but definitely make sure you’re allowed first. Keeping your job is more important than UA-cam.

The more I look at it, I might be able to get away with it. Still no promises though.
To be honest, a lot of stuff I'd like to talk about is outside the cab. (Electrical cabinet, carbody, etc.) Lots of nerdy stuff to talk about there.
