They are more vocal than other dogs The most difficult thing for me to get used to was the growling. I dont like my own dog growling at me, but over time Ive come to realize that growling doesnt necessarily symbolize agression for these dogs. It can mean curiosity, frustration, or just being bratty and wanting their way. Prior to having 2 cattle dogs, I had 2 pit mixes who never growled at me once in their entire lives, so it took some adjustment

@@living2day617 I had that happen once with my dog. He grabbed one of my wifes socks and ran under the bed..... and when I tried to retrieve it, he made it known that he was serious about keeping it. I used a broom to retrieve it and he fought it every inch of the way........but thats the only time and since he turned 3, he has become a much better dog

My German Shorthaired Pointer started growling at me while we were playing tug, and I'm DEFINITELY not used to that. I stopped him right away, and then stopped playing every time he'd start growling. That is until I saw my sister playing with him for the first time, and she was making growling noises at him! She taught my dog to growl during play. I'm not worried about it anymore, but gosh that was scary at first.

Sometimes I've wondered if I was training my Cattle Dog, or my Cattle Dog was training me. Cowboy is a really good looking dog. Our ACDs never really cared about other dogs. We'd take them to dog parks. They'd check out the other humans, then come back to us. We did have one ACD who became dog aggressive though.

Agree with everything you said. I have two a female blue, 4 years old and a male red who's a year and a half. And they are different but at the same time they are definitely both cattle dogs lol. Willow, my female blue took a lot of work to be good with kids and other dogs. She was actually quite reactive for a while, but that was my fault. She lived in a bubble with me pretty much for the first year and a half of her life because I lost my mom around the time I got her. And retreated from pretty much everything for a period and she just really didn't care about anything or anyone else. Does amazing with pretty much everything now though. Actually my service dog. Still has reactive moments from time to time that I have to correct but nothing major. She's good around kids now. Aslan my male red, he didn't have any of the issues that Willow did because I raised him differently and socialized him from the get-go. It's about the individual dog and about how they are raised as well! Great video! Blessing and peace! 🙏🏻💜

I have a two year old red heeler. You are right about the exercise. We have to take a 3-4 mile hike every morning to tire him out or else he misbehaves around the house later. They say they need a job to do and his is to take me for a walk/hike. After a walk he is the perfect dog. I did have to get him fixed to help his roaming problem. The dog is so smart he was an escape artist.

Before I got my underground fence, I would take my dog to a park and let him run around the fenced in baseball fields. However he always found a way out. Eventually, I learned to inspect all the fencing for possible exits and thats where I would stay to prevent him from escaping...........they will also open doors if you dont secure them, found that out the hard way

Heelers are dogs for adults that understand training and living with extremely smart dogs. They are not a "beginners dog". My dogs tolerate my kids, but anyone outside of my family that comes in my yard is a adversary to them and they deal with them as such. They do bite, thats in their nature. Like Jack says in his video's, Heelers are dogs that need a owner thats committed to training their dog. I love Aussie cattle dogs! Smartest dogs by far. But if you don't give them the attention they need, they can become devils if not trained. Give them the attention and training they need and they are like a Roman soldier defending their pack/family. Great dogs!

As much as Cowboy jumps off your truck you should be giving him a daily Glucosamine supplement, if not he will develop hip problems, it just helps to reproduce cartilage, I recommend Dasuquin soft chews or or Pet Honesty Hip+ joint health soft chews, my cattle dog was in pain and in a few days he was ok, vet recommended of course

Yep, agree with the majority of your comments Jack, watch a lot of your short snippets and longer comments.
I am the master or slave to two Heelers, they are unrelated, 5&3 y’s old, one Red much the same as your Cowboy, the other a Blue slightly taller.
Personality wise, they are chalk and cheese, so different, the blue is a talker, the red says very little and very independent but beware any magpie, duck, cat, rabbit or hare, his eye sight is that good he can see them at well over 250 metres, he’s only a foot and a half tall, full sprint, away, very receptive to being called off though. The Blue, doesn’t care but cats beware, painted on ears 90% of the time when on the hunt, hard to call back. The Blue attacks all machinery ie motor mower, barks at all passing cars when in the Ute, the red, doesn’t care, just sits in the car and watches the world go by, same with the mower, just sits back and watches, always watching.
Red is stand offish, the blue is velcro and jealous if I make to much fuss of the red. Only time they get on is when I’m cycling, throwing balls or frisbees.
Otherwise two very seperate and different dogs, these two dogs I owe my well being to, such clever, bright, attentive to the point of sometimes being nuisances 😂😂, ❤love my two boys.
Cheers, keep your comments coming 👍🏼

I have ten of them😂 Which my pups all have the same red teardrop above their Bentleys as cowboy. We have our good days and we have some bad days. Lol. The only one that I have that needs a lot of exercise is my female stumpy tail. She is always high energy and her mouth never stops. By the end of the day she's hoarse 😂 my first cattle dog was good with kids, none of these guys I have are particularly keen about kids. Especially the running and squealing ones.
I have 2 blues, the male is deaf. I have 5 reds and 3 red stumpy tail cattle dogs. Which is a different breed from the acd. Everyone is spayed and or neutered except the pups whom are 6 mos old. They're due for their alterations, I'm not waiting for the growth plates to close this time. Had 2 accidental litters waiting.
I also have a Frenchie. My hubby calls her 50 cent because they're in the 50 percentile for intelligence. Which I disagree with that they're very smart, it's just whether or not they want to do what it is you're asking of them. The reward has to be definitely worth it for them. 😂

I have two blues...bark so loud and shrill will make your ears bleed.
Stubborn, pushy, will growl if they don't want to do something, and shed around the house like
a blizzard. Must go to the beach (I live OBX NC), for at least two or 3 hours everyday, rain or shine, to "herd the waves"
or no rest for me that night. Complete Velociraptor's till they hit two years, then started to calm down.

I love Cowboy!!! My Boomerang , a blue stumpy tail mottled Heeler, is not quite as trained as your boy, however he shows all the same traits as Cowboy. love that you live in a semi- rural area. i live in the california foothills. I am surrounded by cattle and horse ranches with other farm animals present too. Ido give hoim his daily 3-5 mile jaunts and 5-7 mile hikes at least every other week. He can be stubborn, and his bark is supe rhigh pitched, like Cowboy's. I have resorted to buying power tool ear buds and keep them on hand. What sets him off is the need for me to pull over to go pee or poop, at the most in oportune times. So, road trips , the deal is "empty me out, Dad!" My boy can be sassy, but will resond toa "NO!" when needed. I don't use the e-collar, and put it away at 15 months ( i used it only 3-4 months). He is not a fan of muzzles, i only used it for about 6 months in vet office or child areas we had to be near. Now, he's abot to be cropped (neutered )in February, at 2 yrs, 109 months. I hope it will kinda chill him more in certain stressful situations. My main reason is because i want to get him a buddy ( a female GF) without the pup possibility. Thinking female yellow lab less than 2 yrs. I have owned two Yellows before. Anyway, Thanks for your videos, your advice and bringing Cowboy into our lives!!
