- Here is Jimmy James the teesside born 'comedians comedian' performing his classic 'drunk' routine (from 1936). It was a sketch along with his 'In the Box' routine which he performed on stage and TV for years. He also reprised it in the John E. Blakeley/Mancunian Films production of 'Over the Garden Wall' (1950). www.hoydpublish...
Its coming up to my 80th birthday and I have a terryfying thought that I do not have many years left. But I can remember so well as a young teenager going to the hippodrome in Brighton after school with some friends and seeing this amazing comedian. The music hall was just about on its last legs but I found it magical and was so grateful for the shows they put on in the Pier in Brighton. I do not know what is going to happen to the Brighton Hippodrome but I saw many shows there including the out of this world Sammy Davis Junior. I rented a box and took my family to see Sammy. And the magical Frankie Vaughan. Thank you You Tube for these amazing pictures of Jimmy James. My mother Winifred Merrett would have been over the moon at these recordings had they been available in her lifetime. Jillian.
I about 15 years of age in 1957 and I went with a group of girl friends from school to the Brighton Hippodrome. After school of course. Jimmy James was on the bill and I absolutely fell in love with him! It was coming to the end of the music hall and the poor old Hippodrome was in for a bad time. I simp[y adored Jimmy James and now at the age of 79 look at these old recordings and they are fabulous. I seem to remember seeing Sammy David Junior in the sixties - he was out of this world. But dear Jimmy James is the most wonderful comedian ever.
Aww the policeman in this sketch is played my my great grandad Jack Shanley (stage name Cameron MacInley). So lovely to see. :-) x
James is my late nanas cousin
What a great scene.
So well written and excellent storytelling of the two characters
My wife's great uncle. Rare videos like this are great memories to have. His nephew "Our Eli" was her cousin once removed. Also very funny
Hi. I have been researching my Grandfather who was a writer, producer and theatre manager and from a "Heyday" article in The Stage 18th April 1996 it appears that Jimmy James drunk act was born from a sketch "The Spare Room" written by Dick Batch my grandfather. I am going through a box of his hand written scripts in exercise books and have found some mention but not the full script as yet, lots more to go through. He also wrote for other greats of the day including Gracie Fields early company Clara Coverdale Spotlights, Tessie O'Shea, Tommy Dixon, Reg Maddox, Harry Whitehead.
In the 1950s my friends at school in Brighton used to visit the Hippodrome after lessons. One afternoon we saw Jimmy James - I was absolutely over the moon at his performance and have adored him ever since. Only 14 at the time the magic of the theatre was wonderful. It was so lovely when the West Pier did an old Time Music Hall Season with Dick Emery in the sixties. I went to quite a few performances. Magic!.
I love Dick Emery.
@MyUncleToby Fabulous, fabulous!!! It brings tears to my eyes, such genius all three of them, Jimmy, Freddie and Frank.xxx
Wonderful 👏
Here's to ya!
Top 3 English Stage Drunks:
1) Jimmy James (The best)
2) Freddie Frinton (Why isn't 'Meet the Wife' ever repeated on Sky TV?
3) Frank Randle (He had to rein his in as he was often drunker than the character)
absolutely right he was the template for Freddie Frinton
Plod has not changed much over the years
The problem is the Police have change a new generation with new generation ways Cops used to like a drink on duty
Does anyone know where I might be able to find the whole film? It doesn't seem to be anywhere to be found.
'Over the Garden Wall' (1950) is available from Amazon for as little as £4.69 plus postage.
I'm surprised people find that funny.
I find it funny that you are surprised.
