Jimmy James...he was known as The comedian's comedian. There's many a now famous act who will recall when they first started out and they were in the dressing rooms almost too terrified to go on,it was Jimmy James who took them on one side and gave them much needed encouragement and assurance that they would go down great. A real gentleman.
This is superb theatre. Brilliant writing, timing, delivery and characterisation. I've learned and learned from this sketch. There'll never be this kind of talent again
I live in the Tyne Tees Television area. From the way the introducer is speaking of acts we can expect in the future. I would suggest that this would have been the opening broadcast show in 1959 when I was 12 years old. Halcyon days! My how comedy has changed, using mental capacity as source of humour these days would see the studio these days. Jimmy James was Stockton on Tees born and bread. I was with my mam one day when I saw him in Yarm Road walking arm in arm with his wife. After Jimmy died poor Eli was left to fend for himself. He did a little work on TV for a few years but it was beyond his ability. I think it was Roy Castle who got him the work. All the group were related to Jimmy in some way.
Both versions - very funny, especially the part about the coat: 'I bet you didn't go in this coat'. 'No, I went in an aeroplane!!'. 🤣 🤣. Fabulous! Brilliant humour that is suitable for all ages. 👏
Possibly the funniest surreal sketch the world has ever seen. Jimmy James timing is magnificent and the business is delightful. We will never see his like again. And any aspiring comedian needs to study his immaculate work. Much missed.
"Hutton Conyers" and "Bretton Woods" were the names of the characters ("stooges"), and Hutton in particular was played by different actors down the years (including James Casey and other relatives of Jimmy - and later Roy Castle). Jackie Casey made the role of Bretton Woods his own, and later changed the character's name (and his own professional name) to Eli Woods, "our Eli". Both characters were named after places, obviously Bretton Woods is quite well known and Hutton Conyers is a small village in Durham. James Casey Jr occasionally played his dad's role, long after his death, with Woods and Castle, or other comedians like Les Dawson and Roy Hudd.
I can watch this over and over again. Thanks for putting it on.
WHAT A CLEVER MAN JIMMY JAMES WAS . ONE OF THE OLD TIME GREATS , AND OF COURSE HIS CO PERFORMERS GREATLY MISSED .
