    I would love to see another video of the miniDSP DDRC-24 calibration with the Dirac room correction to compare its calibration against REW.

      Rocco -
      Thanks for the feedback. Yes, that is the plan. I wanted to understand what was possible using manual methods first so I could fairly compare ease of use and quality of results. Stay tuned… Jon

    Thank you for this series of videos.
    You have a good room and top notch equipment plus flexibility in placement.
    Even with all that going for you and using the best tools available trying to mitigate room modes is very difficult.
    Documenting the journey in a real world environment is greatly appreciated.
    My equipment is in the living room and it is placed where it has to go so absolutely nothing is optimized to achieve the best audio or video. Thankfully my wife is a kind of geek girl and for the most part indulges me.
    I am an engineer and I like to measure things and I have been tempted many times to do the REW.
    Knowing there is nothing I can do about fixing any audio anomalies I have never gone down the rabbit hole, I have pretty decent sound and the subwoofer is satisfying.
    For me it is better not to know about any frequency response issues.

    I suggest you try to raise each PEQ band manually for each band starting at bottom with Band 1, raise lower frequency by 10db each,this will raise response more evenly across all frequency.

    Looks like a phase cancellation at 45hz, plus I saw some response at around 12hz, which is a load that you shouldn't be putting on your amplifier, and excursion that can physically damage the driver.
    Also, it is recommended that you apply a steep low pass crossover as low as your mains will allow, which greatly improves both tightness and tunefulness of the bass response.
    So, looks like the addition of phase coherence, high pass and low pass filters would have profound effects on your end result.
    Luckily, you can save different settings to see if anything that I have suggested have any merit, and then A-B the results for a final evaluation.

    I too have had mixed experiences running REW + an EQ curve on my MiniDSP HD... Often, what I find works better is if I just do the measurement in REW, look at the line, and then make adjustments manually on my own EQ curves in the MiniDSP... so if you're down by -5dB at 40Hz in your REW measurement, add a medium Q +5dB boost in Mini DSP. While REW doesn't like to boost, there's no problem with boosting in the MiniDSP so long as your subwoofer has the amplifier/excursion headroom - which almost all high end subs would have. Obviously reducing peaks is more ideal.

      I think you are on to something by using automatic tuning as a guide then manually finishing off to suit your preferences.-Jon

    Not sure if this has been resolved since the making of the video but... have you sent the delay in Milliseconds on the second/furthermore sub? They need to to time align to the listening position other wise they'll never sum. The rear subs quite ofter require inversion onbthe DDRC-24 or try of hit the phase switch on the sub itself. This might help work the curve as well trying to match the roll off for the sub at the bottom. I found mine sounded so much better not trying to hit those bottom notes ;-)
    Great video. Cant wait to see the results soon. All the best 👍

  • @scott-richardson

    Something to consider with the strange results is potentially the phases of the subs are being altered by the EQ curves. I am not sure on the tonal qualities of the MiniDSP EQ, but ALL EQ'ing has subtle effects on the phase of the frequency you are adjusting, and to a lesser extent the other frequencies within the EQ curve slope. So you're never going to get a 1 to 1 match between what REW predicts and the final sweep test after EQ.

      I think you are right. Each setting can impact the other. So many variables involved and you kind of need to keep going back to re-measure and recalibrate prior settings. Sort of like tightening a multiple bolts in a pattern with a few rounds before the torque is correct and even.-Jon

      @scott-richardson 2 роки тому +1

      @@ripewave Yeah definitely true about having to go back multiple times and retest with fresh sweeps. Love the bolts metaphor, it's spot on.

    I don't have a single out on my integrated amp or my Elac 10" just RCA L/R how do I hookup the miniDSP ?

    • @ripewave
      @ripewave  3 роки тому

      Jerry,
      I believe it is possible to feed a source directly into the miniDSP and then send the output to the integrated amp. Of course that limits you to one source per miniDSP.

    Is there any noticable diff beteen the HD DSP and the regular one?

    • @josephfranzen5626

      If you’re using the MiniDSP for multi sub setup and calibration it’s generally recommended you stay away from the entry level unbalanced 2x4. There have been plenty of documented cases where the unbalanced base model DSP 2x4 doesn’t output enough mV to properly drive various subwoofer amps, it’s also not that capable in terms of PEQ. I’ve owned both and once I upgraded to the HD there was no going back. It also has exponentially more bands of parametric equalization and can be upgraded to utilize Dirac Live for $249.99 via a firmware update and assuming you have a UMIK-1 or UMIK-2.

    Out of interest, have you tried simply running. the two subs in the front corners of the room? Also have you tried running 1 sub front middle and 1 sub back middle?

    • @ripewave
      @ripewave  2 роки тому +1

      Yes - I started with both in the front - but not is the corners. With the build-in cabinets I would need to lift them up for placement on the countertop. What I had was placement near the front left and right speakers and it wasn’t bad. In fact I had the illusion of bass coming from the back of the room with a quadraphonic record.
      I also tried 1/4, 1/3 and 3/4 and slightly behind halfway before settling on a 1/3 left, 2/3 right positioning. I did not try middle front and back due to the countertops again and also in the rear.-Jon

      What I am aiming for are videos that show the full experience even when things don’t go perfectly. I often feel topics are covered without revealing the discovery process and key details needed to reproduce success.
      In this case I was not able to close the loop with the resulting process for success due to a busy work week. -Jon
