  • A landmark agreement has been signed for a R9 billion innovative nuclear reactor in South Africa. In this conversation with BizNews, the partners to that agreement Stephen Edkins and Warren La Fleur of Koya Capital and Dr. Kelvin Kemm of Stratek Global, share the details and provide a timeline. The First of a Kind (FOAK) Small Modular Reactor (SMR) will have the capacity to generate 100MW of heat and 35MW of electricity. It is expected to break ground before the end of the year. Apart from the South African market, there's been “a lot of interest” in the venture, not only from African countries, but from countries like Australia, Canada, Indonesia, and the Middle East.

That is an awesome initiative and as a wind renewable proponent, I do support it. Regarding costing factors, have you factored in how much bribery money will have to be paid to some of the SA Government officials to get the project green lighted? Is there a budget for that? Like Elon Musk's Starlink project they wanted huge bribes. Musk refused and to this day we do not have Starlink in SA. I wish you guys all the best though.

When the weapon sanctions were imposed against SA in the 80's, the SA engineers rose to the occasion, and answered all the needs of the defense force, so much so that SA even exported weapon systems. It was also in this time that SA developed its own nuclear weapon, only to be disposed off later. What was of equal value, was the general expertise, like advanced project management and System Engineering, and infrastructure that was established. To be successful again, one must realize that appointments must be made on merit only, so that the vast majority of the country can benefit. Beware of being penny wise and pound foolish.

Another example of private enterprise doing what Big Government can never do. Let us hope the government doesn't bugger this up with more onerous regulation.

Even if it uses gas to cooling down, you must still put the power station next to the ocean, FOR IN CASE, I DON'T TRUST NUCLEAR POWER STATION.

As per the 2015 Gov Energy crisis document, the Nuclear plants were planned to go live in 2023.
    This is 5 years late.
The solar and wind guys had a lead start by design.
Citizens in SA will be rapped financially in time to come.

South Africa sold a share ofPBR to China , then sold a share to a Canadian/US consortium . now we are buying back the same reactor at Astronomical prices.
    We are the fools
