  • Looking to get into BFS (Bait Finesse System) Fishing? We may have found the entry-level combo for you! Today we are reviewing the ‪@KastKing‬ Zephyr BFS Reel. BFS reels make it possible to cast lures that weigh less than 1/8 oz. Once you put some practice in, you can be casting light tackle on light line quite far. This system gives you more accuracy than your spinning setup, and comes to us from the trout fishing world. I've been looking to get into BFS recently, so I opted for the cheapest combo I could find. We have the Kast King Zephyr ($69 on Amazon.com) and the Soulyigang two-piece ultralight casting rod. Let's see how they stack up!

I like the reel, but you already knew that. It's hard to tell in the video, but how much line do you have spooled up? I have found reducing the amount of line helps get longer casts. (something about rotational mass and spool startup or something like that). I did pic up some micro bearings to put in mine to make it even better, but have not done it yet. Take a look at the Shimano Sensilite or the Dobyns rod Ethan has for BFS. I have the Sensilite, but I think that Dobyns rod may be better (it does cost a bit more though so it should be).

    • @aaanglers
      @aaanglers  3 роки тому +2

I kept the line trim per Ethan’s recommendation, and I picked up the sensilite, looking forward to fishing it more

I got the zephyr about 6 months ago and I was shocked that it’s actually pretty smooth. I put it on a light action bpm jackall rod.

I bought a couple of travel rods that are the same brand as that rod (soguiyalong?) for work travels. They are absolute garbage, would not recommend them whatsoever. That’s for the content Jeff! Always fun & informative!

Not heard much good about Sougayilang stuff, but Kast King kudos are a common review result. Sometimes it’s best to wait if you can’t afford a better product. If money’s tight, buying a $40 rod, to have to trade up to a better rod is a waste of $40. And if money’s tight, you can’t afford to waste $40. 🤷🏻‍♂️
In other words, you’ve just helped out anyone in a tough financial spot not waste money they couldn’t afford to lose. 👊🏻💪😎

Sorry to resurrect (I'm actually surprised the KastKing Zephyr BFS has been out so long!), but although I'm very new to BFS, I feel this reel is actually pretty nice. It definitely helps that I was able to get get it on sale and with a checkbox coupon for just under $50. I admit that I initially hated it and was about to send it back, but then I realized that may actually be because of the rod I paired it with (7'0" Okuma Celilo Light). I'm so glad I realize that, because after I replaced the Okuma with a 7'0" Shakespeare Ugly Stik Elite Ultralight (quite a wiggly noodle vs the much stiffer Okuma), my experience with casting this reel improved a 100% -- distance, accuracy, number of minor backlashes (remember, I'm a noob), etc. Probably due at least a little to my lack of experience with BFS, but it seems like this reel/combo is best with a 1/8-1/16 bait. All that being said, I'm not exactly neck-deep in BFS as this is just one of my many baitcaster/spinning/baitfeeder/tenkara/fly rods, and I bring it/use it when I feel the need rather than purposely going out and only fishing ultralight/BFS. I specifically and only fishing BFS, then sure, you should probably go for something like the Curado (or better), but if it's just one ultralight combo in your arsenal, I feel this is definitely more than good enough.

I'm so happy you are trying the kastking reel it's been sitting on my Amazon list for a while. As far as the reel speed I've been looking at bfs reels for a few months and most of them have a faster speed. The curado is 8.2.1

I have been casting 1/8 with my regular baitcaster for year . i have a bfs reel , But prefer my spinning set up . i can cast farther and more accurate with spinning reel . I think the reason I do so much better with the spinning rod is almost 50 years of practice . Only about 3 years of practice with the baitcasters .

I just bought the green version of the sougayilang rod its actually great for the money, 1 day shipping. Sweet spot is around 2 gram lures it absolutely bombs, i was able to cats 1.25 gram trout magnet too. Not sure how it compares to the aljexpress rods, but by going through amazon warranty and replacementa takes 3 days not 2 weeks

I'm buying the Zephyr to get into BFS fishing as my starter. Reel. I know in this video. You said you didn't like that rod. But what rod do you recommend? That I can use that's still inexpensive ish. In case I don't like. I'm going to be using it for bass fishing and out of a kayak. Just watched your other video yesterday about the micro jigs , Jerk bait., frog , crankbaits etc . That's what i'm going to be throwing

I'd look into the lews hank Parker crank rod to pair with that. Its a good match 6'10 rod and I throw 1/4 to 1/3 cranks on it with zero effort. They're about $40 at walmart.

1/16 oz spinnerbait having a hard time with that same setup Zephyr/ Sougayiling both bought from Amazon,
I dont think I like the nylon inserts on the guides, almost backlash everytime, tip i think is too soft and whips back on the cast causing the birdnesting, cannot accurately cast 20 yards....
I bought the reel for microlures in treed out creeks and ponds. I think I need a better rod to handle 6lb Berkley Trilene and those super light baits...
I think im sending the rod back to Amazon tomorrow, agreed guides are not good at all, mine were all over the place too.
    Thank you for the video

Man I got zephyr and the speed demon elite man they are junk the zephyr when you push the button on the reel you can cast it but it will not Wind the line back up until you let off the drag control button when you do that you got to tighten it back up I send two of them back now the speed demon elite it aways get snag between the Spool when you cast it with braid line I got my money back now they look awesome reels but they have problems I went back to Shimano and Daiwa reels I sticking with them I don’t know if you have any problems like that

I started with the zephyr with micro bearings and you know i had to so i just bought the curado BFS lefty it cast a 1/32 with a trout magnet like 80ft and im not dialed in yet. its worth every penny. For trout and big smallies handles no prob and the drag sound 🎶.

Spend the money on a old 18 BFS rod, other great option is a Phenix mirage blank and wrap your own guides to suite the species your after. Reel wise the spool support wobbles in some of the reels part of a quality control issue but is useable. Also see many ads for kast king these days something they claim they don't do to pass savings on to the customers. When a company changes its mission statement mid stream you get the impression they were gonna try anything to get their foot in the door and go from there. Experimentation making the customers pay to support the lab projects I'll pass until kast king shows some longer term durability standards with better quality control
