Thanks to everyone for watching and liking this video over the last 12 years! I (Dave Larson) have a new UA-cam channel called Quarterbash that features all kinds of treasure hunting, including coins, rare vinyl, and nerdy collectibles. Come check it out: ua-cam.com/users/Quarterbash
Twenty odd years ago I remember my housemate walked down the hallway and said I think I've heard the future to Hardcore while holding up the cd cover to "We Are The Romans" It really was the start of something incredible. Botch fucking destroyed and basically everything that came out of Hydrahead. I briefly spoke to one of the members by phone around the summer of 2000 in regards to them touring Australia. I just couldn't get the funds to bring them out. At the time Australia was being saturated with Victory Record bands and pop punk. Painfully generic as fuck, the scene needed a kick in the ass. We needed a band like Botch to open the closed minds here, sadly it never happened. We knew though that these guys were something special and would become a band that would be a essential part of anyone's collection. You try buy there stuff on vinyl and see the prices they go for now on Discogs, its insane. Anyway thank you to a band that gave me goose bumps every fucking time! Rant over. Thank God for the working Bees!!!!
*NO ONE* went as hard as Botch. Not At The Drive In, not The Dillinger Escape Plan, not Slayer, not Slipknot, Poison The Well, Converge, The Locust, Head Wound City, Holy Molar, or any band you can think of in recent memory (and for the record, Holy Molar are fucking wild if you see them live). Shit, I doubt even Black Flag had higher energy shows than Botch, and Rollins _loves_ talking about how dudes like he & Iggy Pop "leave everything" on stage. Fuck that, Botch were gods live. This shit wasn't even a punk show, it was just self containing chaos when these guys took the stage. Goddammit, Dave Verellen is in his 40s, and he _still_ brings it with Narrows. I fucking miss the shit out of this band.
Well Protest the hero and Dillinger escape plan and Norma Jean are all doing fine jobs if you ask me. I think most of the bands that try to follow in the footsteps of Botch are genuinely into the music and are the real thing, if theyre trying to cash in, well its not that big a market, so that rules that out and another deterrent is the sheer amount of technicality in the instruments, only really really good musicians can imitate a band of Botch's stature, no job for Bullet For my valentine
Dillinger came out the same time as Botch, Calculating infinity came out the same year as American Nervoso (I think). Since the many great releases of Hydrahead, nothing has changed in the hardcore scene in 20 years. Its become predictable and boring.
@@PedroVonWorzelburger Calculating Infinity came out in '99 the same as We Are the Roman's but technically Botch started this sound & Dillinger perfected it imo. Both amazing pioneers and still stands as 2 of the most heavy brutal shit ever
@@stepthrough6169 Before both Dillinger and Botch you had Rorschach (formed in 1989) and Converge (formed in 1990), they are the bands that kind of kicked off things for this genre. It doesn't matter tho, they are all brilliant in their own way.
They're a little formulaic for my taste. They might have better sounding recordings but I don't think they're a better band. Botch had a tendency to write more patient jams from what I've noticed.

Without doubt an absolute masterpiece of our time
10 seconds in I can hear where norma jean and the chariot got their sound. Wow.
Norma Jean bit a lot from Botch.
@@andYourblooblood and the Chariot...Josh Scogin even screams like Dave Verellen
@@stepthrough6169 Ive thought this for awhile, but he pretty quickly came into his own.
I remember reading a quote when Bless the Martyr came out that they did indeed base their sound change in that album in part on Botch.
One of the best metalcore bands I've heard.

Maybe. But highly doubtful. Maybe At The Drive-In too. But again, doubtful.
Word Up! Except Converge, they had it in them too.
***** Hit & miss. SOMETIMES they killed, other times you could tell they were exhausted from going to HAM on stage.
