    SPOILERS:
    What's great about this conversation is that Ulysses' advice actually WORKS. If you convince Lanius that the Legion can't keep the East and hold the Dam at the same time, he relents. Ulysses is a very contemplative "people watcher". He reads others like a book and that was probably why he held such a high rank in the Legion.

      @Mr. House Indeed, Ulysses was planned to be in the main game, he appears in the cards and some translations of the game replaces a house's name with "Ulysses' house". Obsidian had a plan that they couldn't fit in due to time constraints and so just placed it in the DLC.

      There are many information in New Vegas that contradict themselves. Homosexuality in Legion is NCR's propaganda. Most characters will tell you that Legion soldiers fuck each other, but if you talk to Jimmy, a former slave he will tell you that homosexuality is punishable by death and he was nearly killed by his owner when other legionnaires realized they were lovers.
      Caesar talks a lot about how he hates technology. He refuses modern medicine and drugs for his soldiers. Yet he himself will settle only for the highest tier services, keeps an auto-doc in his tent and demands an actual doctor to perform his operations.
      House sees himself as a visionaire entrepreneur who will bring humanity into a golden age of progress. He's a dictator who thinks himself benevolent and declares that all he wants is the future of mankind. And yet even though he has absolute power over New Vegas, Freeside is little more than a dump of human refuse, where people who got grinded in the gears of strips money-making scheme are thrown, after they lose their caps in the casinos.
      But there is one person in the game that has no contradicting information. One person who everybody sees precisely as they are. General Oliver. Everyone you can talk to about him will tell you what an absolute fucking moron he is and how easily you can manipulate him. His soldiers hate him, his plans are critized, he's called the "Wait-and-see" General. Every single person in the game will tell you of his ineptitude, House, Caesar, even Hanlon talks about how easily he figured out Oliver and he got him to do anything he wanted him to do.
      And given how Oliver is about to try and fight the Courier in the New Vegas ending, when he just saw him murder Lanius and walk back with his bloodied mask and sword in hands, i can't help but think that there's genuinely nothing going through Oliver's head. He's likely incapable of though.

      @Son Gohan while the story indeed needs some work and more rpg elements added I do like some gameplay elements, lore elements, and other stuff done in fallout 3 and 4. My favorite from fallout 4 being that power armor actually feels like actual power armor that turns you into a walking tank instead of just being another suit of armor you slap on. I however really don't care for the fusion cores as power armor is suppose to run off a different power sources. I also noticed Bethesda got lazy with a lot of things in fallout 4 chiefs among them being the fact they've just stopped naming the weapons.

    • @comandercarnis
      @comandercarnis 4 роки тому +7

      @Son Gohan Oh don't get me wrong I do think you should've gotten it later and saved the deathclaw encounter for later as well. I'm just saying fact they got the feel of it right and that it actually feels like power armor that turns you into a walking tank instead of just being another suit if armor you slap on is something I loved. I also liked the settlement building and the ability to customize and later make your own weapons.
      There's a lot that would need to be done to really fix things however short of Bethesda swallowing their pride and letting obsidian do it's thing again I don't see another fallout on par with New Vegas anytime soon. Like there's just a lot of potential floating there in 4 that you just grab but Bethesda just dropped the ball altogether. Something I really wish they would've done is allow you to assign units from the winning faction to your settlements. It would've been nice to have brotherhood paladins or Gen 2 synths guarding and helping outs. The Minutemen while cool on paper are just lacking so much. I also hate the fact they removed the skill checks you could have if you invested in certain skills. That and the factions feel so simplified and they don't have that much impact especially post game. I'm also a bit of a lore nerd and with fallout 4 I noticed they stopped naming their weapons and such like they just didn't care anymore. There's a long list and while there's things I love about fallout 4 there's just this massive amount of waisted opportunity especially since I recently learned they cut out a lot of cool stuff. Mods help but just * tired sighs*
      The things they did fallout 76 that I liked is even shorter and they fucked up there plain and simple.

  • @RickJaeger
    @RickJaeger 3 роки тому +104

    I feel like the NCR lacks for an ideologue. Which is part of their strength, and also their weakness. They're an amalgamation of convenience, not so much of necessity nor internal coherence. Whereas elsewhere in the wasteland, you have strongly forged personalities who, for all of their (many (and serious)) flaws and hypocrisies, have something they're striving for beyond their own immediate benefit. Ulysses, Joshua Graham, Lanius, Caesar himself, Mr. House, even people like Papa Khan, or Marcus, or, to say something charitable about FO3, the Liam Neeson father. The Master. Frank Horrigan. Unique, bizarre, highly driven people.
    I've seen a number of players, Fallout fans, even New Vegas fans, who just don't understand the appeal of characters like this. Who don't _grok_ how anybody could be attracted to strength of personality or commitment to unusual ideological principles. I don't know that I understand it intellectually, but I do feel it. It's powerful, it's dangerous, it's romantic. It's "awful" or "awesome" in the original meanings of the words, and it's the closest, or second-closest, a human being can get to being immortal, inspiring, and terrifying in the same way a feat of nature can be.
    It's interesting. Pretty good for only a video game, huh. I would hate to meet anyone half so charismatic irl.

    • @RickJaeger
      @RickJaeger 3 роки тому +19

      The closest thing to an interesting ideologue in the NCR in FO:NV is probably Chief Hanlon, who I would rank with Papa Khan and Marcus, as people who care about something bigger than themselves-the something being their families and people at large, more so than abstract principles and big ideas. Still, impressive in its own right.

    • @drinky_c19
      @drinky_c19 2 роки тому +14

      I think you've really nailed what the NCR is lacking. At the point in time that New Vegas takes place, the NCR mostly lack leaders with charisma and vision, with men like Kimball and Oliver vastly outnumbering men of honour and principle like Hanlon. More than that, though, they are slowly losing sight of the moral principles of justice and equality that underpinned the Republic's foundation.
      Tandi was basically president for life, and I think she was the last true visionary leader. She was strong and indomitable but also fair and just, she pretty much defined what the NCR was supposed to represent - building a better future out of the ashes of the past.

    • @dinoluka11
      @dinoluka11 2 роки тому +8

      THIS - You put into words exactly how I felt. Closest thing the NCR has to what I would consider a "warrior" in mind, body and spirit is Chief Hanlon. The backbone of the NCR's rangers (not the Desert Rangers). He's one of the few NCR characters I hold respect for. He has ideals greater than himself, charisma, intelligence, and does not underestimate the enemy. Even when he dies, his spirit and ideals will live on through the rangers, making him immortal.
      But still its nothing compared to the powerful personalities in the Legion. Or the visionary and genius of Mr. House. People often shit on characters like these and can't see the beauty of characters like these. I like Ulysses even if he's a little crazy.

    I definitely think Ulysses has a lot of respect for Joshua. In my option Ulysses philosophy is essentially just him wanting to preserve history, since his own tribe's was erased by the Legion. The reason he speaks so highly of Joshua, similarity to how he speaks of how mighty Lanius is, is becuase both men are living legends surrounded by history. The reason Ulysses has such an interest in the Courier is becuase he mistakes them for wanting to destroy history like at Hopeville, which is why talking to you before he destroys the NCR is so important to him.

  • @Omnywrench
    @Omnywrench 3 роки тому +73

    Seems like a major theme throughout New Vegas and its DLCs is learning to let go of the past, and the risk of letting it consume you:
    -Both the NCR and the Legion are trying to emulate governments of the old world (Pre-War America and the Roman Empire respectively) and in doing so have gained their weaknesses and their strengths (the NCR being a corrupted bureaucracy and the Legion being a barbaric cult of personality)
    -The Brotherhood of Steel stagnate in their bunker because their codex lead them to being selfish isolationist horders who make enemies instead of allies
    -Dead Money is pretty much all about letting go; it even says so in the intro and outro more than once. Father Elijah refused to give up on his desire for total control, and in doing so was left alone and trapped within the very vault he desired (or dead, whichever one happens first).
    -The Think Tank have been stuck in a loop for centuries, performing insane and dangerous experiments for their own sake both due to their insanity and the loss of their humanity (and no, I'm not just talking about the fact they're all brains in jars).
    -Ulysses' becomes obsessed with Courier Six after they unintentionally destroyed his new home, and tries to have his revenge by launching nukes.
    Did I miss anything?

      Mine?
      Spoilers!
      Battling beside Ulysses in the middle, then hitting a V.A.T.S and watching it track my bullet and slowly zoom out to show us side by side his gun flaring up it’s muzzle. My Eyebot{Rest in piece Divide Ed-E} flanking the Medical Eyebot as they covering Ulysses flank, his repair bot covering my flank as it vaporizes someone close enough the ash from the marked man covering the left lenses of my Authority Glasses. He shouts how their coming on his flank, I pull back the handle of the M1 Garand slide reaching down pulling out the clip with only two bullets in it. I breathe quickly still under the affects of Cateye and phsyco combination, I keep my hand on the slide as I put in a full clip filled with AP rounds in my fingers glancing the century’s old carvings on the side of the rifle saying “This Machine kills Commies” a joke that flys over most peoples heads, not for me though as I was curious about it.
      I was pulled out of this trance when a Incendiary grenade bounces off of the repair Eyebot and was heading towards Ulysses, I had just made a friend I wasn’t going to lose them this way like this! My left hand keeping a hold of my rifle as I held it one handed near the front, my right hand quicker than ever pulled A Light In Shinning Darkness out of its holster, I screamed angrily and with two barely aimed shots I hit the grenade near my feet taking the flames before it had a chance to roll over towards Ulysses. I batted the flame off of the Elite Riot Armors Duster, I had batted it off only to look up and see Ulysses swing his Cane I flinch but it was not deserved as a Bowie knife scattered on the floor. Regripping my Rifle in a different way as more of a bat both hands on the barrels end, I brought the rifle down on the fallen chosen.
      “Bear and Bull Shadows! Grandeur you once held gone and replaced by shadows!” Ulysses shouted his hand extending downward to pull me up. A Riot Shotgun peppering the back of Ulysses duster, the old world flag on his duster peppered with buckshot. Buck shot that missed the intended target peppering the side of my face, my neck protected by the shoulder pads of the Elite Riot, my pink hair curls being peppered by unnecessary amounts of shot, my glasses getting blown clean off my face.
      Another scream as my rifle fell out of my hands on purpose as my right hand pulled out my Police Baton, my left hand extending out the baton. I jump upwards charging forward smacking downwards, striking the marked man scout in the gun it flying out of its hands. My left hand quickly flying outwards catching the gun in my left hand, the barrel choke shoving against its chest. My trigger pull ripping a large hole through the horrible NCR trooper armor disgraced with license plates and Legion pouches.
      I take a breath as Ulysses deals with this groups minigun, little breathing room at most 50 seconds before the next waves Marked Men come in and Storm us. I throw the Riot Shotgun down on to the deceased owners corpse. I walk forward bending downward picking up my Authority Glasses, rage fueling through my body as I look at the shattered lense on the ground, the right lense completely shattered and scattered on the ground, the left one shattered so badly I can’t see out of it. Rage fueled me as I picked up the shards and put them into a pocket holding Casino Chips from the Madre.
      I breathe slowly once more, I move the chips aside the shards barely cutting me, underneath all the chips are old shades I haven’t touched since I took them off in the Vault. The Sunglasses going on smoothly lot strong then my normal shades my eyes aren’t hurting as badly now from the light.
      The door opens once more as the next group Storms in, “This Machine” strap going over my shoulder. My hand reaches behind me and Unholsters the Survivalist Rifle, his journey is over and I’m ending most of my journey now it’s fitting. I grab loose 12.7 rounds and toss a box near Ulysses, he looks at me and pulls the pin on a Frag Grenade, the Frag being thrown far across the room. Ulysses spins the pin in his finger and looks at me. I enter V.A.T.S and watch my bullet tracking and being presented with a familiar scene as earlier. Last stand, we will kill every last one of these Marked Men if it’s the last thing we do, two Couriers standing in front of the Old World Flags.

    The reason why Ulysses' dialog is so good in this game, is because of how fluently and easily he speaks. It's as if he were reciting poem or giving insight that's come from a very wise philosopher, yet you can understand every single word he says. His perspective is very intriguing and quite logical. He's also a very hard to persuade because of how well established his ideals are. He believes in what he says and doesn't back down. He has facts. He's met the Courier before, and wants to know his reasons to destroy "his world", the motivations behind his actions. It's only natural that he does everything he can to drag 6's attention, so that he may understand which role it will play in the final events of the battle.

      @P. Cameron I think he hates industrialized war or whatever equivalent the wasteland has, not guns and explosives themselves as they are merely tools, where with minimal effort you can create pawns to do your bidding and commit atrocities blindly in the name of whatever convenient truth, whereas hopeville was something that naturally came together out of the ashes of the old world and for the most part like he said was an actual new chance for the world. Hopefully was inspired by America whereas the NCR modelled themselves directly off of America and the Legion regressed
