I stayed at a ryokan on Miyajima and it was incredible. So worth the price I paid - the staff were so nice and the food and room were amazing! I would do it again in a heartbeat.

I noticed on Morizuya's website that you can only book several months in advance and most dates are full. I sent them an email to ask if we can book in December. This was a few days ago, hope we get a reply, otherwise ill check the website every week or so to see when the calendar opens up. Thanks again Amy for sharing another amazing experience.
It was everything you could want from a ryokan! If it helps, you can also book on booking.com, and through the Visit Kinosaki website, although they don't always seem to be accepting bookings - but they're very helpful if you need to contact them! Otherwise, work out how far in advance bookings are taken and set yourself a reminder of when to book Morizuya.

The stars aligned for our budget and schedule and we were faced with booking everytbing in 1 month. My husband messaged the ryokans manager and they had availability here! None were listed on the kinosaki website as having availability, they must have had a cancellation. Anyway im so excited to stay here. I have a very large and potentially scary tattoo sleeve of a snake and i was very very worried about staying in a kyokan and making people uncomfortable. I felt safe enough to make this reservation for us because of your video.
How exciting! I'm sure you'll love it - Kinosaki's gorgeous, and Morizuya has everything you could want from a ryokan. All of the public bath-houses in Kinosaki are tattoo-friendly too, so you can go in any of them that you want to!

Another great report. I laughed when you were talking about your first course as if it were your whole dinner - exactly the same thing happened to us in a ryokan in the Iya Valley on Shikoku: course after course, enough food for easily six people when there were only two of us, and we were hyper conscious that it was considered rude to leave any food. We stayed two nights and it felt like 'death by food' - we were incredibly relieved to escape after our last enormous breakfast. We also found the constant attention rather intrusive and didn't really enjoy that experience. But I stayed on my own in a hotel-style ryokan in Naruko Onsen Town this May, which was the best of both worlds and also the dinner was a more manageable size (plus I knew to pace myself!). Sadly their yukata were of much more limited choice and all very worn out from laundering, not as nice as yours. Also Kinosaki looks like a much posher place than Naruko.

I have followed your advice and have wrote to Manager Hachisuka of Morizuya and booked and confirmed two nights this coming October, first with meals, second without meals. I stayed at this same ryokan on my first trip. I ended up having the same issue with booking directly through their website, I never received a confirmation from them after making a booking online. I ultimately had to have the receptionist at my first hotel call them for me and found out they had never checked their email in the months since I had booked. Fortunately it was a very quiet part of the year and they were able to book me over the phone. Ultimately glad I was able to have it sorted out though, once I had been confirmed it was a fantastic stay. Can confirm the family who runs it is extremely friendly, very eager to take photos for me, and when I checked in they brought me to a small building next door and the owner's mother prepared matcha for me

I stayed at my first ryokan on my most recent trip to japan…we ended up in Hakone as it was close to tokyo as well as on our way to our next destination. I think the cost is definitely worth it. We were there for 2 nights so have 2 kaiseki dinners and 2 kaiseki breakfasts and it was absolutely worth the money. The ryokan we stayed at was around 130 years old and it was absolutely stunning. Highly highly recommend getting one where you can reserve baths for private use - we did this at ours…but it ended up not being a problem as the public baths were usually free (which ended up being a blessing in disguise as i have tattoos on my back, which are a bit hard to cover up!). I also found that having an onsen soak after our huge kaiseki dinners helped digest that fed 😂 if you can afford a stay i definitely think its something everyone should do at least once.
@@cakeswithfaces it was absolutely amazing…and sooooo relaxing…probably the best and most sleep I’d had in a while because there literally wasn’t any sort of visual stimulation like you’d get in say tokyo…and the food also filled you up so that you felt sleepy after the onsen soak! I'd definitely recommend Kinosaki - it has everything you'd want from an onsen town! It's always good to do something new on your next trip - I always find the new places I go are the highlight of the trip!

Amazing Morizuya looks fantastic and I love all the personal touches they included like taking your photos in locations, seeing your kaiseki makes me far too excited it's been years since we had one and I can't wait to return to Kinosaki!!
Thanks for the video, it saved my bacon. I already had Kinosaki on my list from the previous video, but didn't bothere to check ryokans/hotels at the time. Checked now and Morizuya had one room left for a night in December and looks like the town is heavily booked in general for the time I will be in Japan. Close call. xD The food looks absolutely great. 🤤 Looking forward to trying out an onsen for the first time. Despite previous 6 visits never went to one due to having a tattoo. Good to seeing a town being more welcoming about them.
Ah that's lucky, glad you got the last room!! The hot springs will be even more enjoyable when it's colder. You'll love it - just make sure you're hungry for the meal!! It's a rreal treat!

Would have preferred to first plan out where to at what stage of the trip, but with the limited availability for Ryokans in general by the looks of it during that time, I rather book it and then plan around that. I can still get around easily enough since I can still grab the rail pass before the increase. Hope for snow in some of the areas since I will go mid December until early January. Then again who knows with the climate. For sure will need to have an empty stomache for that. That is a massive feast. ^_^
@@cidiracing7481 Which regions of Japan / which cities are you planning to visit? It snows sometimes in Tokyo but it's quite rare, but you'll catch some if you go north, or into mountainous regions.

Excellent video. Does Morizuya still have a tea ceremony upon arrival? On TripAdvisors, there are old videos and photos of the tea ceremony that is performed by the manager's mother in their home next to the Ryokan. Arigato.
That didn't happen when I checked in, but I heard about it too. It could depend on when you check in and whether the owner's mother is around (I believe she does the tea ceremony).
7:04 It is written that "Facial cleanser which is able to remove makeup as well" in Japanese. (Since I'm a guy I don't know the differences in usage between ordinary face cleansers and makeup removers used by women but, with the product, you can remove makeup with ordinary face cleansers usage, I guess.) 14:35 The cucumber decorative cut imitates a whole pine tree. The common point is that both cucumbers and pine needles are (quite) green. Anyways thank you for introducing Japan which is my country in detail always.
Im planning a trip to Japan next year (including a stay at a ryokan in Kinosaki on my birthday) and Morizuya looks amazing, I'm definitely going to consider them for my night stay. How far in advance would you recommend booking a night in a ryokan, especially if you're planning a weekend stay?
That's a great idea - it'll be a real treat for your birthday! In this case, as you know exactly when you want to go, you might as well book it as soon as you're able to. Especially as weekends are likely to book up first. You might find that ryokan only take bookings a few months in advance, so if it's too far in the future the rooms probably won't be available to book yet. I booked in November for a stay in March.
Do they have the private onsen bath available every day? I remmeber checking on some website that they only have private baths open on weekdays until 6:30pm
When I was there, it was in the evenings, after a certain time in late afternoon - you could just go in a lock the door behind you whenever they're free. That was different from what I'd read, so it's possible they change it depending on how busy it is.
Can they accommodate foodallergies at Ryokan? I unfortunately have a really severe sesame allergy. Not very handy in Japan. But I would just love to stay in a Ryokan!
I think you'd need to check beforehand, ideally before booking. Morizuya, where I stayed, were very good with special diets but they definitely need prior notice, because the meal is a set meal that's the same for everyone. If you have trouble communicating with the ryokan, tourist offices can be very helpful. Sesame is a tricky one because of sesame oil.
@cakeswithfaces that's a challenge, everything must be delicious . It's very Interesting the strategy of bringing the rice and miso and the end , to let more appetite for the more complex dishes.
Just replied to your other comment! :-) For anyone else who sees this, it depends on the ryokan, but 6 months is probably too far in advance to book (I booked this one 4 months in advance).

@@smyth339 I've always avoided it too! 😅 However I know people who've been in July and enjoyed it - just be prepared that it is humid, so don't try and go at too fast a pace. Kakigori (shaved ice) is SO GOOD when it's hot - I never really understood its appeal until I tried it on a hot, humid day in Japan. And there are vending machines everywhere so you can always get a cold drink. It's normal to use a parasol in Japan too if it's sunny. The upside of July is there are LOTS of festivals and fireworks. Tanabata is a major summer festival with beautiful coloured streamers and paper decorations, and Mitama Matsuri in Tokyo with 30,000 glowing lanterns is one I've always wanted to go to.
The baths in the video are part of the ryokan. In the evening you can use them privately - just go in whenever they're free and lock the door behind you. So you can go in with your partner. There are only 12 rooms at the ryokan so it was easy to go when they were empty. In the mornings they're shared, with males and females separately. You also get a pass for all 7 bath houses in Kinosaki, which are all public, shared baths with separate sections for males and females.

Hi everyone...we are a couple from Greece and we will be in Japan from 3-20/10 Start at 3/10 from Okinawa... next stop Fukuoka at 5/10 and we want to go 5-8/10 Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Hiroshima, 8-14/10 Kobe, Osaka, Nara, Kyoto, 14-20/10 Mt Fuji and finally Tokyo!! What do you suggest for train's pass? It's a good idea the 14day JR pass? We would like if you have anything else to suggest 😁😉
The price of the JR Pass is increasing in October 2023, so after the increase it's possible that individual tickets will work out better value for you. It's a close call though - and depends where you'll be staying in the Osaka/Kyoto section, and how much you'll be travelling on day trips. I've heard it's quite rude in Japan to not finish what's on your plate. But did you actually manage to finish all of that? How long did it take? If you didn't finish, what happens to the left overs?
In the end I ate at least half of everything as I wanted to try everything but I was pretty full! I was conscious of not appearing rude, so when they collected the dishes I made gestures to show how full I was and was very enthusiastic with my "oishii"s! I'd be surprised if it's unusual for someone to not eat everything, as there's so much!
I have a compact camera and a DSLR (Canon EOS 70D and G7X). I try and be subtle with my filming so it doesn't make people feel uncomfortable and so it's not too obtrusive.
I think so - there are separate rates for room only and room with breakfast/dinner, so I don't see why it wouldn't be possible. You might be best contacting Visit Kinosaki to book, as a booking form might not give you that option.

Loved the video, but just wanted to clarify that not ALL Ryokans allow tattoos in their public baths. Some will tell you that you have to cover them up with a medical bandage.
Yes, it's very unusual for tattoos to be allowed. Especially at every bath in town like at Kinosaki. You can look up lists of ones that do, or book one with a private bath.
hmmm,... the stigma of tattooing criminals (and of course the mafia) is still too repugnant to me ... I won't feel comfortable bathing with people with tattoos ... the willow tree lined stream and Literature Museum are so beautiful here ... I only wish I came in Winter to enjoy the yummy seafood in season. For some reason, the vinegar drinks made here are so delicious.

I wanna go here so bad!! Being that it's all tattoo friendly, this is now my future choice for visiting an onsen town.

Excellent video. Does Morizuya still have a tea ceremony upon arrival? On TripAdvisors, there are old videos and photos of the tea ceremony that is performed by the manager's mother in their home next to the Ryokan. Arigato.
That didn't happen when I checked in, but I heard about it too. It could depend on when you check in and whether the owner's mother is around (I believe she does the tea ceremony).

You mean the cave bath? Yes at certain times, whenever it's free you can just go in and use it privately! ☺️

Im planning a trip to Japan next year (including a stay at a ryokan in Kinosaki on my birthday) and Morizuya looks amazing, I'm definitely going to consider them for my night stay.
How far in advance would you recommend booking a night in a ryokan, especially if you're planning a weekend stay?
That's a great idea - it'll be a real treat for your birthday! In this case, as you know exactly when you want to go, you might as well book it as soon as you're able to. Especially as weekends are likely to book up first. You might find that ryokan only take bookings a few months in advance, so if it's too far in the future the rooms probably won't be available to book yet. I booked in November for a stay in March.

Do they have the private onsen bath available every day? I remmeber checking on some website that they only have private baths open on weekdays until 6:30pm
When I was there, it was in the evenings, after a certain time in late afternoon - you could just go in a lock the door behind you whenever they're free. That was different from what I'd read, so it's possible they change it depending on how busy it is.

Can they accommodate foodallergies at Ryokan? I unfortunately have a really severe sesame allergy. Not very handy in Japan. But I would just love to stay in a Ryokan!
I think you'd need to check beforehand, ideally before booking. Morizuya, where I stayed, were very good with special diets but they definitely need prior notice, because the meal is a set meal that's the same for everyone. If you have trouble communicating with the ryokan, tourist offices can be very helpful. Sesame is a tricky one because of sesame oil.
I bet on the dinner going on until the plates don't go back empty, judging by personal touch in everything. Some kind of challenge.
Especially when your yukata belt's tied up tightly around your stomach!! 😂
@cakeswithfaces that's a challenge, everything must be delicious . It's very Interesting the strategy of bringing the rice and miso and the end , to let more appetite for the more complex dishes.

Just replied to your other comment! :-) For anyone else who sees this, it depends on the ryokan, but 6 months is probably too far in advance to book (I booked this one 4 months in advance).

@@smyth339 I've always avoided it too! 😅 However I know people who've been in July and enjoyed it - just be prepared that it is humid, so don't try and go at too fast a pace. Kakigori (shaved ice) is SO GOOD when it's hot - I never really understood its appeal until I tried it on a hot, humid day in Japan. And there are vending machines everywhere so you can always get a cold drink. It's normal to use a parasol in Japan too if it's sunny. The upside of July is there are LOTS of festivals and fireworks. Tanabata is a major summer festival with beautiful coloured streamers and paper decorations, and Mitama Matsuri in Tokyo with 30,000 glowing lanterns is one I've always wanted to go to.

The baths in the video are part of the ryokan. In the evening you can use them privately - just go in whenever they're free and lock the door behind you. So you can go in with your partner. There are only 12 rooms at the ryokan so it was easy to go when they were empty. In the mornings they're shared, with males and females separately.
You also get a pass for all 7 bath houses in Kinosaki, which are all public, shared baths with separate sections for males and females.

The price of the JR Pass is increasing in October 2023, so after the increase it's possible that individual tickets will work out better value for you. It's a close call though - and depends where you'll be staying in the Osaka/Kyoto section, and how much you'll be travelling on day trips.

I've heard it's quite rude in Japan to not finish what's on your plate. But did you actually manage to finish all of that? How long did it take? If you didn't finish, what happens to the left overs?
In the end I ate at least half of everything as I wanted to try everything but I was pretty full! I was conscious of not appearing rude, so when they collected the dishes I made gestures to show how full I was and was very enthusiastic with my "oishii"s! I'd be surprised if it's unusual for someone to not eat everything, as there's so much!
What kind of camera or you need to say it? Is it hard to travel with sometimes when you go to Japan?
I have a compact camera and a DSLR (Canon EOS 70D and G7X). I try and be subtle with my filming so it doesn't make people feel uncomfortable and so it's not too obtrusive.
Is it possible to book two nights but only have meals for one day and no meals the second day?
I think so - there are separate rates for room only and room with breakfast/dinner, so I don't see why it wouldn't be possible. You might be best contacting Visit Kinosaki to book, as a booking form might not give you that option.

Loved the video, but just wanted to clarify that not ALL Ryokans allow tattoos in their public baths. Some will tell you that you have to cover them up with a medical bandage.
Yes, it's very unusual for tattoos to be allowed. Especially at every bath in town like at Kinosaki. You can look up lists of ones that do, or book one with a private bath.

hmmm,... the stigma of tattooing criminals (and of course the mafia) is still too repugnant to me ... I won't feel comfortable bathing with people with tattoos ... the willow tree lined stream and Literature Museum are so beautiful here ... I only wish I came in Winter to enjoy the yummy seafood in season. For some reason, the vinegar drinks made here are so delicious.
