    Eddie Gladden was a unique master drummer. He didn't get the recognition that many other drummers got but through the work with Larry Young, James Moody, Horace Silver and Dexter it is very obvious. I use to think of him as a heavyweight Billy Higgins.

    Eddie swings incredibly hard, I love his playing. He’s pure flow! A thing I’ve never heard from any other drummer is that this guy feathers his bass drum on half notes rather than quarter notes, quite a lot. If you listen with headphones it’s interesting how he integrates the half note bass drum feathering with dropping bombs with the bass drum bebop style.

    I saw Eddie a couple of times live with Dexter in 1980 and '81. The first time was at a club and then at a festival. Before that I had heard him with Horace Silver on the radio from a festival. Fat and groovy in the band and sensational in his solos. One of my absolute heroes (as a drummer myself). God bless him!

      Yeah Ray same here - I was 18-19 when I went to the Village Vanguard several times and caught Eddie with Dexter there. I almost couldn’t believe how much it was grooving & swinging. Even though I’m 57, I want to be Eddie Gladden when I grow up!

      Right on. I know of no musician whom I could compare as having such a Cool personality and masterful playing style as had the mighty Dexter Gordon. Miles Davis fitted also in this category, as did Lester Young and Oscar Peterson. Add to this, the great Benny Goodman and the impecable composer-arranger Fletcher Henderson.

      Eddie Gladden is one of those most proficient drummers who plays with technical efficiency but also with real verve and spirit, like equally Carl Burnett; or perhaps the early work of Billy Cobham ......those are the drummers whom I really admire...

    It's really interesting to see Dexter's North American group in Europe, rather than his European band.

    • @ghairraigh
      @ghairraigh 5 років тому

      @alterdestiny Absolutely loved both bands. Wish I'd had a chance to see the European quartet, but I was lucky to see Dex's American group often at the Jazz Showcase in Chicago 1976-1986, first with George Cables and later Kirk Lightsey. I only experienced the European group on the wonderful SteepleChase records, which I treasure and believe are far better than the Blue Note stuff.
      Fans were lined up down the block and they had to clear the house after each set at the Jazz Showcase to get everyone in to see Dex with this group from 1976-86. I waited a good four years to hear Dex the first time there in '76, and never missed a chance after...It was a powerhouse.
      To bring your own band on the road was a luxury enjoyed by the very few. The first Artist I paid to see was Kenny Burrell in around 1972 at The London House, and he already had the success necessary to bring his group with Richard Wyands and Major Holley. The first few times I heard Milt Jackson in the 70s, after the demise of the MJQ, he appeared with the house band (local rhythm section) at the Jazz Showcase. Soon, he was able to bring fine groups with the likes of Cedar Walton and Monty Alexander on the road. Yusef Lateef he had his own band with him, as did Freddie Hubbard, Dizzy Gillespie, George Benson, Carmen, Sarah, Ahmad Jamal, Jimmy Smith and a very short list of top musicians I heard often back then as they passed through Chicago twice a year. Sonny Stitt (the Lone Wolf) and so many deserving others never did have their own bands. Dexter achieved the double blessing of having two great road bands for his European and American appearances.
      I treasure and miss that experience.
