You both have it wrong. The drummer is Makaya Ntshoko. I believe he is/was African. He was active in the European jazz scene in the 1960s and 1970s. I have no idea if he is still alive. This film was shot at the Jazzhus Montmartre in Copenhagen, Denmark. Gordon's discography lists it as from 1969. The two tunes filmed were "Those Were the Days" and "Fried Bananas," a Gordon original. Also according to the discography, the film was shot by Flip Film Productions of Denmark.
Makaya is living in Basel Switzerland, I saw him live about 4 years ago and he sounded beautiful, like a minimalist, very different than in this recording... so interesting to hear him sounding so intense!
Well, it is a handheld 16mm camera. The cameraman moves along with Dexter to keep in focus. The clips from the audience are inserts to cover the moments it takes to change a film cassette. A B-camera is employed at the end. But there have also been a digital stabilizing - you can tell by the jumping credits and the logo in the upper corner.
Kenny Drew is one of the best jazz pianoplayers of his time, he clashes a great deal with Dexter and by that reason you don't hear that kind of playing on record very often. It's sounds like he lead his chords with the melody, he just smash around like he doesn't care a lot about Dexter.
barn burner! Im about to sett up an facebook page thats has the purpose of sharing rare jazz recordingsdocumentary`s from all over the globe, search for my name Magnus Skovly and ill send you an invite.
+morningblue And now they each have streets named after them in Copenhagen. Try Google Earth and type in "Dexter Gordon's Vej". I didn't know that Ben dug Dexter's playing, thanks.
Absolutely not.. Stitt was a alto saxophonist the most.. And the ways they played was so different, the ways they improvise: I wonder how one could find thay are the same :-0

?!?!?!?!?! Stitt sounded very much like Charlie Parker. Gordon had this rich tone, while Coltrane had a thin sound and brighter. Very different. You need to do more listening. Now!

Top trio in jazz history for me. Incomparable sound, true music
He said 'those were the days my friend we thought they'd never end " .....that's so nostarsic! DEX is forever!!
Dexter had it all-great sound and knew where to place the notes. With Kenny Drew on piano you have perfection.
he should have lived forever
Those Danes sure had a good thing going with Dex resident in Copenhagen. What a sound.
So much emotion in his notes....beautiful
I feel good and relaxed with Dexter's sound!
Montmartre in CPH. Those were the days! I was there!!
Me too...Nice place.
I remember Danmark's Kaj, the owner.
画像は、古そうですが、音(音質)は、とても素晴らしいゴードン、ペデルセン、ケニー・ドリュー、黄金のトリオで最高🎉🎉🎉

Did I see Ben Webster in the audience?
I read somewhere that it was Ben booing/ joking, at the beginning. 😎
how are they getting the camera to move with him like that?

NHOP solo is insane.
Who know those chords played by Kenny Drew in the tune "Fried Bananas" in this video ? His chords are far different from "It could happen to you " .
Kenny Drew is one of the best jazz pianoplayers of his time, he clashes a great deal with Dexter and by that reason you don't hear that kind of playing on record very often. It's sounds like he lead his chords with the melody, he just smash around like he doesn't care a lot about Dexter.
Thx Anders !
@@SuperGarden78 Tritone substitution.
The second tune "Fried Bananas " has very similar harmonics to " On A Slowboat To China "
@@PierreSchirrer thank you 🙏
Oh Yeah!!!!
The truly great one in this group is NHOP.
Naturally, nobody in the commentary below even mentions him. 18:08
Song: "Those Were The Days". Where was this filmed, and when? Denmark?
At Jazzhouse Montmartre, Copenhagen
Bass solo at 18:08 and it's a corker!

4:59 THE LEGEND. BEN WEBSTER
+morningblue Gee, definitely looks like him, you sure?
+Soren Hvenegaard 100% positive. They both dug each other's playing, and lived in Europe for a stretch.
+morningblue And now they each have streets named after them in Copenhagen. Try Google Earth and type in "Dexter Gordon's Vej". I didn't know that Ben dug Dexter's playing, thanks.
+Soren Hvenegaard Wow didn't know that! Very nice. I doubt we have a street named after Dexter here in America. Sad.
+morningblue All of those musicians spent large parts of their lives in Denmark and/or died there.
Nope!
What's this about Ben Webster here?
Ben Webster moved to Copenhagen in 1969 and yes, he is seen here in the audience.
I wonder about the difference between Coltrane, Stitt and Gordon ? Coltrane and Stitt sound the same !
You need to do some more listening. Each one of these guys has very distinct and different styles easily recognizable
Absolutely not.. Stitt was a alto saxophonist the most.. And the ways they played was so different, the ways they improvise: I wonder how one could find thay are the same :-0
