Definitely a copy made during the Cold War for collectors, I love the oakleaves with swords & diamonds, if you want to sell it to me just tell me

Always had a weird fascination with the Iron cross and its variants, I would lose my shit if I found an awarded one for sale.
(yes I'm well aware this is a post-war repro, still better quality than about 98% of all repro's made today though)

I have a real one. My grandfather fought in Europe against the Germans and captured a high ranking officer. It was one of his few war prizes he brought home.

Some people insist that the term strongly magnetic iron core means it is in it's self magnetic, I have see people testing the iron cross by trying to pick up a pin with it. A collectors forum member said "if it will not stick to a fridge like a fridge magnet it is a fake", Perhaps it should be described as, if a magnet picked it up is has a iron core.

An original has a magnetic core and a three piece construction. A lot of fakes are diecast but be carefull.

I have a KC. The center is not magnetic. But the frame is not from a cheap metal. Is it real? Is it fake? Is it Kriegsmarine? Is it field wear?
    I cant tell.

As you move up the price range for Iron Crosses the Chinese efforts or whoever become quite advanced..
3 layers, 44mm across the flats, iron centres, careful ageing and a clear little wear here and there.. A bit of light rust.. Sell a knights Cross alongside some other real, less expensive medals.. etc, etc.. Make it part of some old person's heritage...
All and everything has been done to try to sell copies of a medal that would be worth $15 000 and upwards - if genuine..
Only proved provenance can help you find a genuine example...
If not then you're going to get conned..

Both real & fakes can be magnetic or not = test magnet is not enough to determine if a knights cross is original

This clip was just as the title suggest- A magnetic test- It was posted for a buyer in France that wanted to see it. I ended up trading it with a local appraiser for a large auction house, who had a collector that wanted it as a placeholder in his already substantial collection.

Just to get a few of you set proper- I never claimed this was real, and actually got over 12K in trade value for it- with the recipient knowing exactly what it was. Anyone seeing this that has half a brain and any real knowledge knows that each officer that received this very exclusive type of award has a traceable record, and there are none that are un-associated. This has some things about it that were of interest to the collector that talked me out of it, and he asked me for a magnetic test video- I was in my shop painting an aircraft part, and put gloves on to not tarnish the medal. The buyer knew well enough what it actually is, and this is what he said-
This is post war construction from materials gathered from the factory where these were being made, after a USA B-25 bombing mission. They were sold as forgeries of the real thing to unsuspecting collectors in the 70's and 80's.
I got this for next to FREE in an estate sale bulk purchase.
99.99% of you will never even hold one of these in your hands, let alone a real one, so try to keep that in mind when you are about to type

Some collectors want placeholders, and have more money than most- Rare things sell, even if they are known to be copies. Some folks want to collect those too.
Hell, look at the knuckle draggers that collect Converse and Nike sneakers.
