This is a man who has embraced the purest form of ALL MUSIC in AMERICA and rather than toss it to the Disco or Rap Devils, has chosen the solitary life of keeping the form as alive as the day it was born! The future for Joe Bonamassa is as certain as the sun being where it usually once again in the morning.
saw him in Worcester Mass last week, best show I've ever seen anywhere, much better sound than the one in Springfield. It was unbeleievable, you gotta see him live as often as possible.

Great is always a tough act...we agree that he's very good. To me, and to eric clapton who used this same adjective, great, is that joe,while certainly plays some easy licks for crowd appeal, his acoustic work, the clearness of the notes that he plays, and the precision at which he scales up and down the neck are works of wonder.He is GREAT

I miss this Bonamassa. Back when he just played to play. He wasn't trying to do his "blues poses" during solos or make "blues faces" when he played. He shredded and accepted his status as a bluesman who shreds. This new classy entertainer Bonamassa doesn't have the same soul he once did.
Maybe he's just getting more into his music; into his music zone. I would imagine that playing such intensely emotional music might lead one to make "blues faces" or "blues poses" without him being aware of any of it.
I only discovered Joe about 3 yrs ago and so I've been gradually getting to know him thru his music. I would agree with you that in some ways Joe is missing whatever he had that made BB King say on an interview that he had "it" when he was only 12 yrs old at the time. I've seen him twice live this year and I notice he's playing a lot more blues/rock instead of the straight-on blues of his earlier years. In fact the first song that I heard of his was "I'll Sing the Blues for You". and I was hooked. I just hope he won't lose his blues roots in search of the millennial audience.
No. Joes just getting older. Shedding the young man vibrato. Dressing to the 9s and being respectful. Trying to raise the bar on the status of the Art Form. I had the good fortune to see him live in Fargo, ND. and he absolutely did not disappoint. He's also got a lot of traveling to do, a business to run and a ton of playing to do. He's got to conserve himself. He's basically created an empire with a small team and doesn't need the approval of a record company or rely on entities like Clear Channel to throw him a bone. Young Joe didn't have that kind of responsibility. Older Joe has a legacy to think about....and more power to him.
Amazing that there are so many critical comments of Joe. He's doing what so many others aren't, and that is keeping the blues alive! Who cares if he is or is not the best at this point. I would rather listen to Joe introduce the blues to a new audience than not at all.
They say that "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" and Joe does that sooooo well. He plays SRV better than SRV, both Jimmies better than both Jimmies, and yet at the very least adds newness and soul to all that he has learned from the Masters over the years. He is a true student of the classics and keeps the fire in R&R, Blues, Jazz, Funk and R&B alive. So to all of those elitist naysayers out there-put up or shut up. He is a prodigy and a modern virtuoso and is continual in his growth and art. I have been following him for over 5+ years and cant get enough! Peace.....P.S. Anybody know who the Bass player is???

I beg to differ. Between guitarists there are huge competitions. Example being when Jimi Hendrix first played in England, Clapton, Page and Townsand all admitted to being totally intimidated by his guitar playing and Townsand and Hendrix actually had a little spat at the Monterey Pop Festival about who was going on first both wanting to out do the other. You are right about the evolution of music though. Isn't It incombant upon the apprentices to out do their masters? So point being, Joe completely out plays his covers of all his influences, which is not to take away from their originality or innovation. It's just a fact that Joe is a virtuoso and is an excellent study. I believe his only weakness perhaps, is his lyrical writing. His music is great but he seems somewhat immature yet in his poetic composition. But he definitely has that Mozart prodigy thing goin on and I just love to hear him play-anything. Peace
Well if Mountain Time doesn't move you or Heart aches for nickles or Sloe Gin etc etc then your trapped in the past my friend. I agree with most of what you said but there's not much Joe can't play and at least I find his guitar playing (acoustic & electric) exceptional in every way. This has been his curse. They say how can a "White" kid from up state Penn. have any life experience to be able to play the blues honestly? Well I believe that the blues and early R&B touched his soul as a young kid and he ran with it. Just because he hasn't had the tribulations of the Delta Blues men doesn't mean he doesn't feel it or can express it. Hell the British Invasion proved that! In fact that's where, he says, most of his influence came from-Clapton, Beck & Page. I'm just saying that like you to many of today's guitarists pander to the technical side but Joe can pretty much express it all. Innovation and artistry is all relative. He is definately under rated. Just my opinion
I enjoy him and first saw him when he was a mid-teen in S. Florida, but Joe plays too much...all the time...almost every song. Constant riffing. It gets old.
I haven't been listening to Joe for very long. His music is very impressive. Having listened to most of the blues/classic rock guys (blues rooted) for most of my life...I gotta say Joe brings alot of variety to his guitar. He's found a voice through his instrument and his singing that is uniquely his own. His phrasing has got a classic beauty to it. That occasional fingerpicking and volume control with his right is wild. He's got a very clean sound, little extraneous noise. He's awesome.
Being from Central New York I saw this guy when he was only 14 years old. He impressed the crap out of me then, and he's only gotten better over the years.
I saw Joe live a week ago. If you were were there you would not be comparing him to anybody. He is a master of the guitar and a true showman. All guitar players MUST see him in concert if it's the last thing they do. Stevie, Rory, Jimi they're all gone. Joe's the man.

I stumbled onto Joe on UA-cam in around 2008 while watching some of my other favorite blues artists. I was lucky enough to see him live in the fall of 2010 at the DPAC in Durham, NC.

Just started getting into Joe, after my sister turned me onto a video. I like the clean blues sound he projects and who doesn't like the old style blues, I don't know I don't think I could live without my delays..lol. I know he uses a little reverb and a little slap echo, but I go all out...lol. Anyhow love his work and this video, keep kicking ass Joe.
I could not agree more! I've seen Joe live once and will be seeing him live again in May. He comes out on stage and plays 2+ solid hours of Blues and Blues/Rock and keeps you engaged the entire time. He's one of the hardest working musicians I have ever seen. Not only can he tear up an electric with the best of them, he can do some stuff on an acoustic guitar that will make your jaw hit the floor. Unbelievable guitarist!!! One of the best of all time in my humble opinion.

Blues is the purest form. I have been a hard rock collector for 35 years but when you come to the blues, the raw emotion can not be expressed in a form that takes to you like the blues. I have 20,000 itune songs in my collection but the blues,? What else needs to be said?

i found joe at his best in this performance in denmark. he always has exceptional guitar techniques but the chemistry between player and audience here is a great extra. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is the peak of the blues. He does it all and enjoys every second of it. Now, it must tilt back the other way and people will find the simpler and more sedate and subtle stuff. First you get lit up by this guy and get and interest and then study the history. In order to fully appreciate his playing do the homework and find out where it all came from. Then you'll really appreciate it totally. Blues isn't a flash in the pan. "It was here before time." Muddy Waters.....
Unbelievable! His volume swells are as good as it gets. The only other guitarist I personally have seen that I can remember being near this excellent is Phil Keaggy. Sorry, I don't have any links to where he is really showing his stuff but he has really good volume control as well. This is such a great performance!

I've been listening to some of the great blues players, my personal favourite being the late Gary Moore, for as long as I can remember, but had never delved into Joe's music. What a mistake! This totally blew me away and I shall be investigating the back catalogue immediately!

It's just a fact that Joe is a virtuoso and is an excellent study.
I believe his only weakness perhaps, is his lyrical writing. His music is great but he seems somewhat immature yet in his poetic composition. But he definitely has that Mozart prodigy thing goin on and I just love to hear him play-anything. Peace
Well if Mountain Time doesn't move you or Heart aches for nickles or Sloe Gin etc etc then your trapped in the past my friend. I agree with most of what you said but there's not much Joe can't play and at least I find his guitar playing (acoustic & electric) exceptional in every way. This has been his curse. They say how can a "White" kid from up state Penn. have any life experience to be able to play the blues honestly? Well I believe that the blues and early R&B touched his soul as a young kid and he ran with it. Just because he hasn't had the tribulations of the Delta Blues men doesn't mean he doesn't feel it or can express it. Hell the British Invasion proved that! In fact that's where, he says, most of his influence came from-Clapton, Beck & Page. I'm just saying that like you to many of today's guitarists pander to the technical side but Joe can pretty much express it all. Innovation and artistry is all relative. He is definately under rated. Just my opinion
I enjoy him and first saw him when he was a mid-teen in S. Florida, but Joe plays too much...all the time...almost every song. Constant riffing. It gets old.
When he was only 12 years old, Bonamassa opened for B.B. King. what were you doing at 12....HAHAHAHA!
I haven't been listening to Joe for very long. His music is very impressive. Having listened to most of the blues/classic rock guys (blues rooted) for most of my life...I gotta say Joe brings alot of variety to his guitar. He's found a voice through his instrument and his singing that is uniquely his own. His phrasing has got a classic beauty to it. That occasional fingerpicking and volume control with his right is wild. He's got a very clean sound, little extraneous noise. He's awesome.
This is like a combination of Roy Buchanan, Gary Moore and Jeff Beck on
steroids, whew!

I saw Joe live a week ago. If you were were there you would not be comparing him to anybody. He is a master of the guitar and a true showman. All guitar players MUST see him in concert if it's the last thing they do. Stevie, Rory, Jimi they're all gone. Joe's the man.

If you wanna see some more absolutely incredible raw early JB blues-rock, from 2004, search for "Joe Bonamassa Reconsider Baby Tangier". The two part Pain and Sorrow at Tangier is also great if you're into Hendrix-like distortion.
If you want to see another awesome version of "Blues Deluxe" on UA-cam from 4 years earlier (March, 2003), search for "Blues Deluxe Denver". It's only got 70k views (probably because video was shot in what looks like night vision, audio is fine). I stumbled onto Joe on UA-cam in around 2008 while watching some of my other favorite blues artists. I was lucky enough to see him live in the fall of 2010 at the DPAC in Durham, NC.
Joe was explosive at this show. Every vid from this event is truly some of his most high energy and soulful performances. Loved his style in 2007..still great just changed his approach
The dude never plays a tune just to get through it. He's "all in." Has my respect. A shy, quiet guy. But lay a six-string in his hands, and he turns into a beast. Check out a few of his earlier CDs.

Just started getting into Joe, after my sister turned me onto a video. I like the clean blues sound he projects and who doesn't like the old style blues, I don't know I don't think I could live without my delays..lol. I know he uses a little reverb and a little slap echo, but I go all out...lol. Anyhow love his work and this video, keep kicking ass Joe.

I could not agree more! I've seen Joe live once and will be seeing him live again in May. He comes out on stage and plays 2+ solid hours of Blues and Blues/Rock and keeps you engaged the entire time. He's one of the hardest working musicians I have ever seen. Not only can he tear up an electric with the best of them, he can do some stuff on an acoustic guitar that will make your jaw hit the floor. Unbelievable guitarist!!! One of the best of all time in my humble opinion.

Blues is the purest form. I have been a hard rock collector for 35 years but when you come to the blues, the raw emotion can not be expressed in a form that takes to you like the blues. I have 20,000 itune songs in my collection but the blues,? What else needs to be said?

This is the peak of the blues. He does it all and enjoys every second of it. Now, it must tilt back the other way and people will find the simpler and more sedate and subtle stuff. First you get lit up by this guy and get and interest and then study the history. In order to fully appreciate his playing do the homework and find out where it all came from. Then you'll really appreciate it totally. Blues isn't a flash in the pan. "It was here before time." Muddy Waters.....

Unbelievable! His volume swells are as good as it gets. The only other guitarist I personally have seen that I can remember being near this excellent is Phil Keaggy. Sorry, I don't have any links to where he is really showing his stuff but he has really good volume control as well. This is such a great performance!

Just absolute brilliance. I've been listening to some of the great blues players, my personal favourite being the late Gary Moore, for as long as I can remember, but had never delved into Joe's music. What a mistake! This totally blew me away and I shall be investigating the back catalogue immediately!
