- The Witcher is home is many interesting characters, one of these characters being Cahir Mawr Dyffryn aep Ceallach one of Geralts close friends in the witcher books, although he doesn't appear in the witcher 3. Cahir is one of the most important characters in the witcher books. He played a pivotal role in both Ciri and Geralt's journeys in the witcher books and even games to an extent. His relationship with both Geralt and Ciri is one of the more complex ones as although he starts out as a villain - to both - he becomes a key figure in the rescue of Ciri and a trusted comrade of Geralt of Rivia. In this witcher lore video I discuss Cahir's origins as well as his story from around about the start of Blood of Elves to pretty much the end of Time of Contempt.

Cahir is a majorly underrated character, he is personally one of my favorites. They butchers him in the netflix show, along with a lot of other good characters too. Cahir needs more love.
Cahir is super likeable in the books but they made him such a bastard in the series
Personally my favourite character in the books. I don't understand how he can become the person he's supposed to be in the series. I feel like the series has already ruined his character.

Cahir had such a hard life...he tried to explain his point of wiew several times to Geralt but he didn't listen. I wish his life ended better than it did.

The boy who made an oath to his mother on his brother's grave to never stop despising Nordlings with flaming hatred died a traitor to his nation fighting alongside Nordlings to save Nordling girl...Sapkowski did an amazing job portraing war and how meaningless it is to the ones who fought it it...
almost 1.5 years later we need the next part please :) seeing how the show didnt portray him as Cahir was on the books

He and Milva are my two favorite characters from the books. The show has been doing him dirty.
This is the true Cahir, not that religious nut they made him to be in Netflix. Shame, the actor looked like Cahir if they kept his natural haircolor, and kept that helmet on. I questioned why they reveal his face too early, as Ciri remembers him by the great wings of his helmet. He ceased being a figure of her nightmares when she saw his astonishing blue eyes and fair features. He died trying to protect his fair lady.

I hate what Netflix has done cahir. They turned him into a zealous nut job.
I mean, in the books he starts as a villain too. Hopefully the show sticks to the books and has him become a hero.
Yeah but the problem is that in Netflix he looks like a psychopath who enjoys killing northern people while in the books he looks more like a person that has been ordered to do a job. So it was easier to make him a good guy

@@jackturnock821 As a show it's not bad, and if you haven't read the books I think it's good but as an adaptation is awful. If you've read the books the changes were terrible. So it all depends on who's looking I guess.

@@jackturnock821 I liked a lot of things but disliked some others a lot. I didn't like what they did with Brokilon or Villentretenmerth for example but Geralt was great.
@Daddy1724 They are still on time to do something with Cahir, they can still turn him into the Cahir from the books. I can't say the same with Fringilla (no idea why they didn't create a new character instead of using Fringilla there) but with Cahir there's still time.

I doubt there will be a "Witcher 4", the witcher games have gone in a chronological order and focused on Geralt of Rivia. He is now retired, and sick of the road.
What is more likely is a spinoff or prequel, something akin to "witcher: the...". So yes, if CDPR does a witcher game taking place before witcher 1 takes place, Cahir might be a character, only, the massacre/conquest of Cintra is a quite nasty thing to get through censorship boards so I am having trouble seeing it done properly...
Though, I would love a chance to fight alongside scoia'tael, raiding the kings caravans, spying for nilfgard, ambushing Cintran forces, raiding along the rivers, hiding in brokilon, being broken, and bartered away to the north as tribute for peace... the elves keep drawing the short straw.

Nevermind apparently they did so due to the way Ciri saw him, but it still makes no sense.

@@ducky36F one of my main problems with the show is they think if they skipped all the things that happened between ciri and Geralt that made their bond so strong and only included the word "destiny" enough times, the bond between ciri and geralt will somehow just be magical..this is just one of few main problems..without even mentioning the smaller ones lol

I read the book in French and in my traduction during the fight on thaned cahir described ciri as a enraged cat fighting to protect her kittens and then when he saw geralt fighting he said that it was more like a angry tiger and I thought that it was a good way to put it

I didn't like Cahir at all, till the battle on the bridge happened, then he became one of my favorites. But to this day I still don't understand why he wanted to rescue Ciri, did he love her? Did he still want to take her to Emhyr? Did he want to give her a better life? I don't know
I'm going off of memory here since it's been a while since I read the books, but the way I understood it... at first, when he took her from Cintra, he was doing what he was instructed to by Emhyr, nothing more, although he felt sorry for Ciri since she was basically a young, frightened child at that point so he tried to comfort her.
The second time, when Emhyr gave him a second chance to correct his mistake of losing Ciri, I'm not sure what his motivation was. But by the time he starts traveling with Geralt though, he reveals that he has for some time been having dreams of Ciri as a young woman... dreams so vivid that he has basically fallen in love with her (or his visions of her at any rate) and feels it is his destiny to protect her - which to be fair is exactly what happens towards the end of the story. Also worth noting that these appear to have been the same exact dreams Geralt was having of Ciri at the time, so it is strongly implied Cahir is tied to her by destiny as well.

@@ems7448I think this what the intended interpretation was. This is exactly how I remember it being portrayed and I went into the books totally blind only after seeing Witcher 3 official Artwork when the game was released, having never once before had any contact with the Witcher series. I understood it as Cahir being a Nilfgaardian Knight, but just decent and honorable. It wasn’t until Geralt’s Hansa goes full “Chrono Trigger JRPG Adventure” in the later books that Cahir’s call to destiny and Ciri takes precedence over his lineage and country, similar to how Geralt abandons The Witchers Path.

His name is heavily based on welsh/celtic, for those that didn’t know. For one, ap is a part of a person’s name to denote their father, so if your father was called ceallach then your name would be (name) ap ceallach. Also mawr is a welsh word/name and dyffryn is a welsh house/surname, also Griffudd is Welsh

I can understand Cahir's disdain for being called Nilfgaardian. It's like when a European calls me Yankee, I a man from the deep south. From their context it is technically correct, but it is like nails on a chalkboard to my ears.
