Bless this man and all the people who were there for this tragic event. My grandfather fought courageously in Pearl Harbor. His ship was the USS Hulbert. He awoke to a church bell constantly ringing and he saw the planes in the sky. He departed from my grandmother and ran on foot through a large field while running in a zig zag motion. He said he could see the grinning faces of the Japanese pilots trying to shoot him because they were so low to the ground. He eventually reached his ship and fought through the two waves of attacks. Meanwhile my grandmother was with her neighbors and her two infant sons in a car traveling to an underground tunnel that was being on the base. She said they could feel the bullets hitting the top of the car from the pilots. The last thing my grandmother saw before entering the tunnel was the USS Arizona sinking in the murky water below. They were in the tunnel for about 24 hours before the military police found them. She and my grandfather were apart for 6 weeks not knowing if each other had survived.

My deepest respects for a fellow Quartermaster. One of the four original Naval Enlisted Ratings. It's the first I'd heard about the Chief Quartermaster taking the initiative to ground Nevada as she was sinking in the channel rather than block the channel with the ship as the Japanese intended. Sad to say that the Navy tried to courts martial him for insubordination for his actions, but later commended him. As a Quartermaster in the Coast Guard, I saved or assisted in saving my ship three times: you're on the bridge, your experience tells you what's right, but as an enlisted man, you'd better be Damned Right or you will be Damned. I had a conning officer screaming a wrong helm command in my face as I was master helmsman in the very tight transit that was Sergius Narrows north of Sitka, Alaska. I stood my ground and helmed the ship into the safe channel and told the conning officer "Right rudder aground, Left rudder channel". He backed down but never apologized. 20 minutes later, we had another possibly catastrophic incident when a newly minted Chief Bosun's Mate was "breaking in" as conning officer and failed to realize that the ship was backing down uncontrollably. This time it was the quick thinking of an MK1 in the engine room that called over the sound-powered phones "Drop the Hook!" Our anchor caught just in time to avoid us trashing our propeller on the rocks. By the way... none of us got recognized for saving our ship.

Wife’s Grandfather was 15 and working in the dry dock across the harbor when the attack happened. He commandeered a truck and distributed ammo after the attack started. He received a Civil citation. He ended up enlisting at 16 and ended up in Okinawa. He was a Mason, a pilot and bakery owner. Good guy. RIP Papa.
