- The new video for 'Cognitive Dissident' was made in conjunction with long-time collaborators: directed by Tim Pope with editing, VFX and projections by Vicki Bennett (People Like Us) and Peter Knight. ‘Cognitive Dissident’ (written by Matt Johnson and Barrie Cadogan) is the first single from Ensoulment, the first studio album from THE THE in a quarter century.
THE THE and Tim Pope have a long, shared history working on a variety of videos and projects, including The Comeback Special film of the concert at Royal Albert Hall in 2018, the legendary Infected The Movie in 1987 - the first ever long-form video album release - the Versus The World film of the concert at Royal Albert Hall in 1999, and From Dusk ‘Til Dawn in 1993, as well as many music videos over the years including ‘Pillar Box Red’, ‘The Beat(en) Generation’, ‘Kingdom of Rain’, ‘Gravitate To Me’ etc.
Vicki Bennett (People Like Us), acclaimed video collage artist, and Peter Knight (photographer) have also long been associated with THE THE having worked on the videos for ‘We Can’t Stop What’s Coming’ and the ‘Stolen Moments’ GlobalEyes remix by DJ Food as well as creating the kaleidoscopic, cinematic backdrop for The Comeback Special world tour.

This track didn’t grab me at first, but it’s starting to work its magic on me now. 40 years with Matt Johnson and he still has something to say to all of us.

Undercover of the Night by the Stones is a great song the really captures the feel and essence of living in a dystopian nightmare but it was released 40 years ago

@@johnnymeyer4253 I loved all the music from the punk, post-punk and, new wave period. And while I knew a couple songs by The The they were never really on my radar. Only in the last few years I have discovered their catalog and I can fully appreciate what Matt writes about. I'm a huge fan now and look forward to catching them live this year.

The more I listen to this song the more I think it's from the perspective of someone who's come to the realization that both of the political tribes that think all of the worlds evils are the other side are dancing to the same song played by the same masters. It's all a big club, and none of us are in, as Carlin said.
It's far deeper and sinister than that. The political parties are just a tool for the men behind the curtain.
Whereas some other artists are pure sellouts to the narrative, Matt Johnson's The The continue to deliver razor sharp messages through their unique artistic view and talent !

I'm not saying this to show off but I was educated at cal and Harvard and being the child of immigrants I learned more him and them in middle school in the 80s. He definitely helped shaped my pursuit of knowledge although I was raised my open minded south Asian parents. I truly adore him!❤

A masterpiece of a song and video. Matt has captured the Zeitgeist again in a way that he's seemingly always been able to do. 25 years since NakedSelf, yet this track sounds so fresh and worth the wait. It augers well for Ensoulment. The best things in life sometimes take time to get right. It takes lots of hard work to make things look effortless. This all somehow puts me in mind of Bowie's The Next Day. Thanks Matt, you are peerless and the band sound better than ever. Keep on keeping on.

Despite the huge and uneven gaps between studio albums, The The have been a sound track to my life. Caught them live once at Reading 93 when Dusk was my most played album of that year. A unique act and this new single is up there with Matt's finest. Great to have them back.

When I first heard the track, I thought it was decent. I decided to persist because its a big deal to have a new 'The The' song...I'm glad I did. It's got better and better with every listen and gets me even more excited for the upcoming tour. Matt is saying all the things we've been thinking since the pandemic....that many are too afraid to say - scared of being called a contrarian or put into a box by the mainstream.
People say that musicians shouldn't get involved with politics but I like that Matt clealry disagrees. He's got a platform and he's willing to use it to voice his concerns of where our future as a world lies, fair play.
The lyrics are on point and it's clear to me that Matt has as strong a voice against the powers be as ever before, perhaps stronger. Glad to see your star is shining brightly! Now can't wait fo the album.

Superb. See you in Toronto. I know I said this on the other video, but I just can't believe I got front row, just slightly off-center seats. 30 years I've been waiting. And now I'll experience it, bringing my 16 year old son Matt to his first concert. I've never anticipated a concert more than this.
