Ngl, after I played through the whole opening(six million Jeep glitches later), I shut the game off, cried, and didn't look at it for a month. Amazing game. Sarah's death was visceral and haunting; Joel holding her body like that was a stomp in the guts. He did EVERYTHING to save her, and it wasn't enough.

I obviously noticed him seeing how much Joel cared for Ellie here, but now that you mentioned that extra context (headcanon or not) it makes better sense for it to be seen that way

This is why it's so unfair of Ellie to tell Joel that he should've let her die in that hospital. Even if it means "saving humanity."
She's rambling so fast, so excited to tell Joel the cool thing she saw. She loves him and wants to share her excitement. Great choice!

@Ro-Girl She WAS terrified. The threat is gone now, and she's excited to see Joel. Fear and excitement are closely intertwined, and both cause adrenaline. It's not uncommon for people to switch from fear to excitement once they're no longer in danger. In fact, it's incredibly common.
Tommy watched his niece die in Joel’s arms and he saw what that did to him. The second he sees Ellie interact with Joel like this, two things became obvious. He knew that Joel was opening his heart up to someone and he also knew that Joel wouldn’t be able to handle losing her like he did Sarah.
details like these are why this game is a masterpiece
And then he threw all of that away by not taking Ellie and letting Joel go without any human help or supplies.
@@jomardepedro because they had no supplies or people to give. Joel also realized something, that his little brother had found a happy ending in a really brutal world, and he was unwilling to let him risk it.

The show had THE PERFECT template. Game fans would have been ecstatic with a faithful adaption but no, HBO couldn’t grant us that.

I think the scene that really shows Ellie's love for Joel is the one when they are at a house arguing after she stole a horse. She basically opens up to Joel and straight up tells him that everyone she cares for is dead except him.

This is when Tommy realized the neaning of these words, cuz he thought at first Joel was just sending him for some errands that he doesn't want to do. While the truth is because he can't lose another daughter.
Yess, that's why in the end he agrees to do it, and the "Godda**it*" that's when he realize why joel needs tommy help
She talks excitedly to him and tells him what happened with her, and all he cares about is her safety. He is like a father who fears for his daughter. Joel loves Ellie very much.❤

They should’ve had a scene similar to this in the show. Where it shows Ellie’s child-like depiction of a dangerous situation and Joel just being concerned for her safety

This is the moment when Tommy sees how much he cares for Ellie. Ellie has become his daughter and Tommy knows that Joel would not survive losing her again. That’s why Tommy is not surprised at all when Joel tells Tommy in Part 2 what he needed to do to save her. If the Joel of the hospital was around in the beginning of the game, Sarah would not have died either.

@@net_tales Maybe, Sarah would be in her thirties after the 20 year jump. But to be honest, had Sarah not die, there’s a good chance that Joel would not have wound up in Boston.

What happened to him made him hard mentally, Tommy didn't have that happen to him at first that's why he was softer than Joel thus Joel saying Tommy was alive because of Joel implying Joel took care of Tommy and saved his life multiple times. Tommy after years gets hard as Joel but at first he didn't have what Joel had since he didn't lose a daughter like that even though he was probably harder than most people since he lost a niece but still it is not like losing a daughter. So yeah if Sarah had lived i don't think Joel and Tommy would survive all these years.
The way she look at her own body to check if she was not actually hurt is a very realistic touch

This reminds me of the scene where Spider-Man returns in endgame and is telling Tony everything that happened and then they hug

The show is good and does improve the story in some areas, but overall the game is still so much better. These little scenes add so much to their characters
Fr my most beloved game all my siblings play it and there my kids I'm happy to see the show doing well I hope they add a little more from the game
I personally don’t think the show Improves the story in any areas tbh. Gives a different and more cinematic experience sure, but I would never tell someone to watch the show vs playing the game for the proper experience of the story.
@@YA1291 Agreed. The show is a great and faithful adaptation but you scroll the internet and people are acting like they reinvented the fucking wheel. Don’t get me wrong, I love what they’ve done with the show but it’s at the point where you can barely criticize it haha. The 20-30 hours of just playing the game and constantly being with Ellie really delivers a level of nuance that you just couldn’t explore near as easily with a 9 episode series

Also before this, when Joel first separates with Ellie to help Tommy, Ellie acts negatively about being alone from Joel.

Tommy probably hasnt seen that side of Joe ever since ... Sarah. And for 20 years he watched his brother turned bitter and cruel, only to see that this little girl brought his old brother back, someone he longed see again but kinda gave up hope for. And then he knew, he has to help them. For his brother.
The little scenes like this are what makes the game perfect. Amazing writing and directing.

Most people say that in the show Tommy realized how much Joel cares about Ellie only recently when Joel talks about his nightmares and fear of losing her too, but I think Tommy realized that earlier when Joel scolds Ellie for her table manners and then apologizes for it. Tommy's look was like "yeah, this kid is making Joel a father again."
Her movements are so human, great animations.

The body language that Joel does here is what kills me. They were just sepparated and then attacked. He wasn't there to protect her like he has been the entire adventure and he's terrified of the idea that she got hurt. You can't see his face from the angle, but the voice and hands communicate enough.

Tommy realized why Joel is taking care of her. Tommy himself saw Sarah in that moment.
It's simple. Joel asked Tommy to take Ellie on to Colorado. This scene made Tommy realize why. Joel didn't want to be the cause of another Sarah.. he didn't want to lose someone, like Ellie, because it's Joel that really cares about Ellie in this scene. Tommy realizes that.
That “goddammit” hits hard.
This is the one scene I wish was in the show. But I still enjoy it nonetheless.

this was maybe my favorite part in the game. The Last Of Us’ opening with Sarah’s death is one of best starts for any project ever made. the tie up is here is so beautifully done and i definitely got hit hard in the chest here during my first playthrough

I'm playing again part1 and I realized that yes, Bella Ramsey is perfect for Ellie.

I admire the subtlety with which Druckmann writes. Everything is kept to the bare minimum. Minimalistic writing is the best.

I think this is where the HBO show actually struggles.
Condensing the entire first game, plus the Left Behind DLC, into just 9 episodes gives very little breathing room for moments like this to happen.

But I'm very disappointed of the show, there are no encounters with monsters, no action. And the little that we had is in 1 episode only.
