  • 2020 Nobel Laureate in Physics Andrea Ghez talks with Brian Greene about the details of the long journey to discovering a supermassive black hole in the center of our galaxy and the technological advances that brought her search into clearer focus. Listen to their fascinating conversation about Professor Ghez's research, her reaction to winning the Nobel Prize, and the importance of being a role model to young men and women in science.
Brian starts the session with a brief discussion and audience Q+A. Andrea joins the conversation at 27:54
This program is part of the Big Ideas series, supported by the John Templeton Foundation.
Live Sessions are conversations hosted by Brian Greene with world-renowned scientists, including World Science U faculty exploring matter, mind, and the cosmos.

Andrea Ghez' enthusiasm is infectious, thank you so much for getting her on the show. It was a real treat to hear from her since her award.
Regarding requests for the show, yes, Penrose would be great! Is it possible to maybe catch up Leonard Suskind? I would "love" to virtually pick his brain to get caught up to where his current line of thinking is at with regards to just about everything he has spoken and taught about in the past. I'm sure the conversation you could possibly have with him would be absolutely engaging, as it always is with him.

Question for Dr Ghez: On using your old equipment and new to align to the same coordinates as being a tricky problem (59:22 for about 2 minutes). Do you have perhaps an envelope of the elliptical orbit of SO2? Much like a trumpet narrowing down as it gets closer to the mouth, so too would the initial envelope be larger than the ones 25 years later with the more sensitive equipment.

Dear Prof Greene, If space time is quantized into local 3D units in the scale of Planck's length ,than how do we refer to the new non local space which separates these units apart from one another? how do these units communicate between them?
can we assume that this extra space is a grid like non local extra dimension ( or even dimensions)? can this non local grid like dimension be responsible to the "spooky" quantum behavior ,like quantum tunneling or quantum entanglement?
    Thanks, Eran Sinbar, Israel

  • @alanlowey2769
    @alanlowey2769 3 роки тому

Professor Ghez - you make a good point that Einstein’s gravity theory is not the final answer. There is a fundamental problem in that it is irreconcilable with quantum mechanics. There is also the problem of basic Newtonian gravity theory, which is why science is searching for the elusive ‘dark matter’, which is reputed to make up ~84% of all matter of the universe.
There is an alternative point of view which hasn’t been philosophically explored by science: that Newton’s imagery and equation were fundamentally wrong from the very beginning. It’s possible that a nucleic density matter exists at the centre of the Earth, which is very different from objects we find on the surface. This idea would negate the need for ‘dark matter’, because the extra gravitational effect comes from within the heavenly bodies themselves.
This strong gravitational interaction from core to core can even explain climate change as an alternative to greenhouse warming. If a stronger gravitational force exists on the orbital plane, giving the solar system it’s generally flat shape, then extra tidal energy could be transporting heat away from the equator, giving the effect of global warming. This would happen because the Earth is spending more time on the disk shape of the solar system.
What percentage chance do you give this new idea as being a true picture of reality?

Thanx WSF for the greate persons you bring in and the place to share ideas. - Congratulations Andrea wishyou the best. - Hexagonals are the BEST of all figures to fill space with and actually matter tends to fall in hexagonals throug space just see when zooming in though a super-nova star. - Have you notice that stars do not follow same direction orbit? they just go in all directions.
Why do not stars collapse into one another even they get too close near the black hole? even stars follow different orbits they just dont collide into one another. - We see that most purple stars speed up at the black hole spot no matter to what side they orbit(left, right, down or up. - there is an orange star that speeds up VERY FAR AWAY from the black hole spot so why is that? even this orange star seems to go faster for about half the orbit and slower the other half.
My self think that it might turn out that instead of a BH inside our galaxie center it could be STREAM of LIGHT-MATTER as we have seen some other galaxies do the same, it looks more like an OUT PUT of light- matter due that the orange star mentioned up above speeds up way out to high from the BH spot, galaxies do EMITE an out put perpendicular to the galaxie disk why should our galaxie be an exeption?
Galaxies just might work the same as the Torpedo fish, if you see the video: SHOCK AND AWE: THE STORY OF ELECTRICITY-JIM-AL-KHALILI-BBC HORIZON in you tube, at time 30:10 we see the left side of the Torpedo fish that shows a grouping of electric cells that all cells must to be interconnected one to the other so at the end all the cells as a single group will give an out put of 120 VOLTS, at time 30:21 the right side is shown and same as the left group all of them are interconected one to the other so they are able to give an output of 120 volts so when this 2 groups meet they produce a 240 volts output tha would nock down a grown person, this same video at time 30:34 the fish shows a kind of a circle that to the bottom part forms a V SHAPE, this v shape is very common in galaxies just see the video:
WAL-THORNHILL: NO ISLAND IN OUR ELECTRIC UNIVERSE - SPACE NEWS in you tube at time 3:20 left figure, the black middle part of the galaxie shows to the bottom the very same figure as that in the Torpedo fish, if you click my logo and see the video THE FLOWER OF LIFE OR DNA DECODED you will see that the picture of DNA shown in there has 2 V shapes one at the south and one to the north, same thing is seen in the Aztecs SUN CALLENDAR to the south and to the north as well.
The DNA FIGURE shows that the DNA SYSTEM divides by 2 sides that are north and south sides, it shows entanglement in cross section from north to south while all pairs entangled meet at the very middle part of the sphere which makes me think that even stars entangle by pairs and all the entangled stars make the WHITE SPHERE that is been seen in our galaxie that is the place from where the out put of the galaxie come from to the north a stream and to the south another stream of light-matter, this output is channeled through a V shape(one to the south and one to the north) the v shape must to start by the white sphere center and this out put is directed up both sides though this V shape electromagnetic kind of round tunel and my thinking is that this tunnels is what distorts matter when seen say a galaxie from inside of one of this tunels making it look like what they call GRAVITATIONAL LENSE but really it might be a ditortion due that we are seen from inside an electromagnetism that is kind of round from the inside.

Gosh, that visual of how black holes would look if it were happening in front of us wasn't impressive at all. Especially the part where the visual jumps from supernova to black hole. It just skipped a whole huge chunk of the visual process.
Another thing that makes me suspicious of our so called knowledge is the fact that they never show us a 3D representation of mass bending space. It's always just 2D. Like if a heavy ball were to lay on a rubber sheet. It drives me nuts!!! Why won't they ever show us a 3D model??? I think either because they are lying so we can't figure out free energy or we are not as knowledgeable as we think.
I mean we have been visited by "flying saucers" and orbs and such since the beginning yet "nothing" could pass the speed of light???
I'm so sick of the lies and I'm so glad I haven't had any children to have to deal with this. Our freaking leaders are evil greedy pedophiles that actually want their children to finish selling the oil way after they have died.
I can't STAND IT!!!!!!!!!!! WILL SOMEONE DO SOMETHING!!!! OH LET ME GUESS. WHY DONT I DO IT????? WELL MAYBE YOU'RE RIGHT.

Ve-nu-tian. And not only is there life on every planet in the solar system. There's intelligent life on every planet and every planet is alive and so is the Sun. Next Question!
